you may read the daily reports from our last 13th

EPMeeting in Bucharest, Romania. Here you can

find two letters, also: one from Vladimir Manea, astudent ofBucharest University, and the other from

Natalie Ross, teacher at the Australian Catholic

    University.

We are publishing them as considerable wit-

nesses of what is science today and that history of

science and technology could solve a few educa-

    tional problems both at

    secondary schools and

    university worldwide.

    Dear Mr. AngeloRapisarda,

My name is Vladi-mir Manea and I am

    the student from the

    Faculty of Physics in

    Bucharest to whom you

    have spoken the last

week at the EPMeet-ing. I am sorry that I

    was unable to partici-

    pate any longer on

    Wednesday or at all on

Thursday, due to some problems I had to attend to atthe Faculty. Nevertheless, I think I understood your

point of view and the aims of the EPMagazine and

could clarify my opinion in the following.

First of all, allow me to congratulate the EPM

project and to thank you for getting involved to such

an extent in this kind of activity, which I think is one

of the few activities that have the potential of devel-

oping the students' communication and even creativ-

ity skills and aptitudes, at least at a novice and inter-

mediate level. Also, thank you very much for receiv-

ing our participation at the Bucharest meeting thelast week.

I understand that there are two kinds of possible

cooperation between EPMand an academic insti-

tution, a partnership, on the one hand, and, on theother hand, a cooperation at the editorial level. I

think that both would be useful for our Faculty and I

will try to explain why in the following.

The faculties and departments of physics are ex-

periencing a shortage of high school graduate appli-

cants all around the World and, of course, also in

    Romania. The reasons

    are multiple, but one of

    the most important

    (which applies at least to

our country) is that thecommunication between

    the university and the

    high school levels has

    dropped during the last

    years for the physics do-

    main, and high school

    students have ceased to

    understand the impor-

    tance of physics and the

professional possibilitiesit has to offer. The im-

mediate consequence is that most high school gradu-

ates choose to study Economics, Law, Foreign Lan-

guages, Computer Sciences, i.e. domains for which

the professional field is obvious even to the average

pupil. This is the reason for which we have decided

it is important to increase the visibility of physics in

our country and to encourage the young pupils who

are interested in science to pursue a corresponding

career. One of the ways by which we intend to do

this is by creating a website (in Romanian only)with exactly this purpose. We are still working on it

and I hope it will be launched on the World Wide

Web by the month of May. The website will con-

tain physics news and events, attractive lessons

about interesting or intriguing phenomena, re-

corded and explained experiments found on the

Internet or performed by the students of the Fac-

ulty of Physics in Bucharest etc. On this website

we will also encourage our visitors to check out

any other partner websites or magazines and it

would be our pleasure, with your permission, tomention the EPMagazine and its website as our

partner, which I hope would help increase the

    EPMvisibility in Romania.

pentru Facultatea noastr i voi ncerca s explic dece n urmtoarele.

    peste tot n lume i,desigur, n Romnia.Motivele sunt multiple,

    dar unul dintre cele mai

    importante (care se ap-

lic cel puin n aranoastr) este scderean ultimii ani a comu-

nicrii ntre nivelul uni-versitar i cel liceal

The launch and administration of the physicswebsite would require the active implication of at

least a number of students from our faculty who

would be attracted by such an activity. These stu-

dents who already agree to help the physics website

could be interested in getting involved in the edito-

rial work ofEPM. Unfortunately, this is only a pos-sibility, not a certainty at

the current time and I can-

    not guarantee that any stu-

dent would agree to get in-

volved with EPM. I com- pletely agree that EPMwould be a good opportu-

nity for any student (at least

of the first two years of

    studies) to develop his com-

    munication skills, to learn

how to create and then pre-

sent a material in front of

    an audience, to learn the

importance of documenta-tion and the essential aspects involved in writing a

scientific paper etc. Alas, the number of students is

low (60, maybe 70 students a year) and this de-

creases the probability of finding some who are in-

terested in extracurricular activities (and who are

    also competent enough).

I will nevertheless try to find interested and ca-

pable students and I will get back to you with the

results as soon as I have a clear situation. Also, al-

low me to consult you in the future regarding the

details of the editorial activities ofEPM.Yours sincerely,

EPMagazine offers universities and schools acollaborative literary space for the sharing of scien-

tific ideas and discoveries in their historical and cul-

tural context. What better way for young thinkers to

develop their communication skills in the sciences,

across international borders using English as a com-mon language whilst incorporating first language

contributions into the layout. The European Edito-

rial Board supports scholars of the sciences as

portana documentrii iaspectele eseniale implicate n redactarea unei lu-crri tiinifice etc.

they develop their written and spoken English lan-guage skills through article contribution and confer-

ence presentation in a mentored environment con-

sisting of high school students, university students,

school teachers, and university professors from

many institutions globally. It is the goal of the EP-Magazine to invite contributions from scholars the

world over and in my opinion, never has such a goal

been more significant to the task of the future of sci-

ence in history. This is because the ways we precede

in the sciences today will impact the future of hu-

manity and the future of our planet. I invite you to

    explore the website and con-

    sider making a contribution

    by contacting the editors to

find out the rules for making

    a contribution.

The History of Scienceand Technology is the his-

tory of what it means to

    know and to possess skill

(art or craft). A specificWestern history and culture

    of observation, experiment

    and experience culminated

    during the Enlightenment as

consolidated intellectual practice and reflected in the

natural and human sciences broadly. In 2010we rec-

ognize that what was deemed appropriate to histori-

cal process is not always kind to humanity, to nature

or reflective of responsible or ethical action. The

craft we use to enact new knowledge upon the world

and each other must reflect ethical action and humanresponsibility if we wish to use science as a technol-

ogy for creating peace on Earth. This has reflected

in scientific practice at times during history. We

cannot separate the sciences from human responsi-

bility for one another and I challenge scholars to

take up this task for the future through continued

    communication, contribution and sponsorship. Pub-

lished three times per year in print, once a year on

disc and available online all year, I can only imagine

this magazine will continue to grow from strength to

    strength.Natalie Ross
