Michael Wright MP

Minister for Industrial Relations

Minister for Finance Minister for Government Enterprises

Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing

Welcome to the second edition of Sportshorts for 2009. This booklet is packed with ideas and opportunities for children to be active and participate. South Australian families have a long and happy history in active recreation and sport. Despite the explosion in technology-based leisure, the good news is that sport and active recreation still plays a major role in our lives. In fact the recently released 2008 National Exercise, Recreation and Sport Survey (ERASS) results show that SA’s participation rate in physical activity was 83.3 percent, a noticeable increase on last years SA participation rate of 79.3 percent. Regular participation in active recreation and sport contributes significantly to healthy development of children, both in mind and body. Through involvement in sport children build relationships, become part of a team and connect with their local community. Individual and team sports provide wonderful environments for children to develop skills in time management, decision-making, organisation and self-responsibility. They set and achieve goals, improve their own health and wellbeing and most importantly, have fun. A positive, encouraging and supportive sporting environment can increase a young person’s self-esteem and confidence and can have a positive influence on other areas of their lives, including schooling. A recent study conducted in New South Wales found that family support was the leading factor in a child’s interest and continued participation in a sport. In other words, children who grow up in an environment where sport and active recreation are part of everyday family life are more likely to want to get involved themselves. Parents who are active with their children and encouraging of their involvement in an all-of-family approach often notice that their own personal health improves, their relationship with their children improves, and they end up having just as much fun as the children. The National guidelines for physical activity recommend that children be sufficiently active for at least an hour on most days. For adults, it is thirty minutes. It’s never too late to start, and it makes perfect sense for families to take every opportunity to be active together. I encourage you to share some of these messages with the families in your school community. Sportshorts is available to download from www.recsport.sa.gov.au. Please use your school newsletters, website or other channels of communication to promote this resource. You may just start an individual or a whole family on a new sporting adventure. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to those individuals and organisations who, along with the South Australian Government, are striving to get more South Australian families actively involved in sport and recreation to ensure the future of the recreation and sport industry in South Australia, and contribute to the future well-being of all South Australians.

By involving families in decisions about your school’s sport and physical activity programs, you can also play an important role in promoting lifetime participation in sport, ultimately leading to a healthier and more active community.

Keeping Children Safe in Recreation and Sport A handy resource for volunteers who help with school sport. The efforts of community volunteers who assist schools by taking on the roles of sport coaches, managers, officials, referees and supervisors, deserve our thanks and commendation. Without their valued contribution, school sport could not operate to the extent it currently does. In recognising this invaluable support, the Office for Recreation and Sport (ORS), with the assistance of Families SA, is pleased to offer a resource booklet titled Keeping Children Safe in Recreation and Sport to help community volunteers better understand the issues and responsibilities surrounding child protection in the sport setting. Schools and sports coordinators have a duty of care to ensure their sport volunteers are kept informed and aware of their responsibilities to ensure the safety and well being of all young participants under their care. In a straightforward and non-threatening manner, this booklet provides important information for sports volunteers by providing information and checklists that help explain their legal obligation to report any suspected child abuse and/or neglect. It is hoped that by clarifying the issues up front and in a positive fashion, our school sport volunteers will feel more comfortable and confident in continuing to volunteer their services. The ultimate outcome is more young people participating in a quality, fun and safe sporting environment. The booklet can be downloaded from the ORS website at www.recsport.sa.gov.au/resources-publications/resources-publications. UPDATED INFORMATION

RECREATIONAL TRAILS IN SA

South Australia has a spectacular outdoor environment and what better way to explore it than along one of our recreation trails. Whether you want to walk, cycle, paddle, dive or horse ride there is a trail for you. From the city to the outback, with landscapes ranging from rolling hills, to dramatic coastline and rugged outback ranges, many of SA’s trails have interesting stories to tell about the country, wildlife and history along the way. The Trails SA website (www.southaustraliantrails.com) has information on a range of trails that can be searched by experience, region, activity or even level of difficulty. The Trails SA website also has other useful information such as travel tips, events and links to other great websites to guide you in your trails adventure. In addition to the information you can access on the Trails SA website, there are a number of publications available free of charge. One such publication is “40 Great South Australian Short Walks”. This handy booklet covers walks around SA ranging from 45-minute walks to five-hour hikes. If you are after an adventure of a different sort, there is the Eagle Mountain Bike Park, just 20 minutes up the Freeway from the CBD. The 124-hectare Park has beginner to advanced trails as well as a skills park and dirt jumps area. While the physical activity benefits of trails are obvious, the educational benefits are also a unique opportunity for schools looking for a different venture for their students. The natural environment and cultural history of areas that trails run through is often equally as significant as the trails themselves. For further information on trails within South Australia please visit www.southaustraliantrails.com or call the Office for Recreation and Sport on 7424 7766.

Premier’s be active Challenge Inaugural Gold Medal Year

More than 24 000 South Australian students from 256 schools across the State met the challenge to be more physically active in 2008. This more than trebled the number of completions from 2007. This year over 30 000 students from 300 schools have already signed up for the Challenge. It’s not too late to join the Challenge in 2009. You have until September 25 to register and approve activity. The Challenge asks students from Reception to Year 9 to be active for at least 60 minutes a day, five days a week, for up to 10 weeks. Through the Challenge, young South Australians not only learn about the health benefits of regular physical activity, including the prevention of heart disease and diabetes, but that being active is great fun, especially when friends and family are also involved. Awards Students who complete the Challenge are awarded medals; in 2009 this includes the first ever gold medals for three years of involvement in the Challenge. In November, fifty of the State’s high achieving schools will be presented with a certificate and $1 000 of sporting equipment during the Premier’s Reception. Ambassadors Students have been motivated to lead healthier lifestyles by the 19 Premier’s be active Challenge Ambassadors – top South Australian sportspeople – who have visited schools across the State. Adelaide United Football Club has also conducted clinics as part of the role as an ambassador team for the Premier’s be active Challenge. Visits can be arranged by completing the online form. What participants thought The feedback from school communities about the 2008 Premier’s be active Challenge has been very positive including some examples below: “…my son loved the challenge and would come home and go outside and play rather than watch TV like he would normally do. He would tell he me was going outside to do his PE homework!!” Sarah, Year 2 mum. “…my son was a bit shy and not all that sporty. He never really showed any interest in sport. Now he is outside a lot more and while he is not quite ready for a footy team, he does ride his bike and skateboard a lot more.” Julie,Year 6 mum. Tenison Woods College We are now one of the fittest classes in the school, having completed 10 weeks of the Premier’s be active Challenge. This was a challenge in the recent wet weather, however the children all enjoyed the extra physical activities and their skills in different areas have developed further. We have also been linking our health and fitness to Maths, exploring concepts of mass, time, length, perimeter and area. Many of our Literacy and Numeracy tasks related to the Olympics. A very busy term! Magill Junior Primary Following our registration as participants in the Premier’s be active Challenge we decided that we would have a twenty minute physical activity period at the start of each school day. Our activities have included: juggling, dancing, tennis, skipping, completing obstacle courses, power walking both around our school and around the neighbourhood, ribbon dancing, cricket, basketball, hopscotch, gardening in our ELC and as a special treat we recently spent a very active day at the beach. What we didn’t realise was just how popular our early morning sessions would become, with parents and teachers participating. We decided to continue with the sessions for the rest of the year and found that our pupils were coming to school early to ensure that they didn’t miss out on any of our activities. We are proud of the fact that we have achieved a one hundred percent completion of the Challenge and will be awarding the medals at our end of year prize giving evening. We are very grateful to the Premier’s be active Challenge for encouraging us in developing a healthy body to complement our healthy minds. Field Officers The Office for Recreation and Sport, in conjunction with regional partners, coordinates the be active Field Officer program throughout regional South Australia. The Field Officers are key contacts regarding the provision of sport and recreation in their respective regions. They can assist by connecting schools to community participation options and, in some instances; work directly with schools to provide opportunities for students. Each Field Officer has an information sharing e-network and school sport contacts should ensure that they are on their Field Officer's distribution list to stay on top of regional opportunities.

SPORTS ABILITY

Sports Ability provides a unique opportunity to develop inclusive sport opportunities for young people with and without disabilities. It allows you, in lessons, to cater for students with a wide range of abilities. Sports Ability provides the basis for the integration of all students. Sports Ability is presented in a flexible format that enables it to be used in a variety of school settings. It can be utilised to support existing curriculum for the delivery of Physical Education and Sport. Sports Ability can provide the basis for an inclusive sport carnival or to provide young people with disabilities to participate in existing sport competitions. Sports Ability adopts a social or environmental approach to the involvement of young people with a disability. This approach concentrates on the ways in which teachers, coaches and sports leaders can adjust, adapt and modify the way in which an activity is delivered rather than focus on an individual’s disability. The Sports Ability program is based around five activities: Sports Ability comes with a set of activity cards, which show the basic rules of each game, as well as additional activities that can be used.

How can you access Sports Ability?

A number of Sports Ability Kits can be accessed through the Office for Recreation and Sport, be active Field Officers and DECS District Officers Sports Ability demonstration sessions and training can be arranged by contacting: Email: [email protected] Phone: 7424 7605 Fax: 7424 7674

TALENT SEARCH

The South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) is continuing to search for potentially gifted athletes through the TALENT SEARCH Program. TALENT SEARCH is designed to identify students who may possess the physical and physiological attributes to be successful at sport’s highest level.

Every secondary school in South Australia is invited to participate in the TALENT SEARCH Program. The process commences with an appraisal of basic physical and

performance data on Year 8-10 students, which is collected and submitted to SASI by physical education staff. Promising students are subsequently invited to further testing by SASI and may continue on to talent development programs. The tests in this initial stage (Phase 1 testing) are common ones, regularly undertaken in schools to determine the physical fitness of the students. This data is sent to the SASI TALENT SEARCH Unit for processing. All participating students receive a result certificate with their scores, averages for their class and year, and how they compare to national norms. Students attaining an

exceptionally high result on a combination of the tests, are invited, via their Physical Education coordinators, to further testing by SASI (Phase 2 testing). Data from the Phase 2 testing is then scrutinised by the SASI TALENT SEARCH Coordinator and SASI coaches. Selected students are invited to attend an information evening at SASI and to then join the respective Talent Development squads, overseen by SASI. These developmental programs are usually organised in conjunction with representatives from State Sporting Organisations. The TALENT SEARCH Program is all about providing an opportunity for students to succeed in an area for which they are inherently predisposed. Each and every student from South Australian Secondary Schools is potentially afforded these opportunities; however, this can only occur if PE staff collect and submit results. To assist in this process, TALENT SEARCH is offering to come to Secondary Schools in the metropolitan area, with staff and equipment, to assist with the administration of the fitness tests. For more information please visit www.recsport.sa.gov.au For more information on the SASI Talent Search Program, please contact: Annette Eastwood Talent Search Coordinator Phone: 7424 7696 Fax: 7424 7755 [email protected].
