Last week Mrs Delvecchio was asked to present to a conference of Stage 3 teachers about our student-led Learning Conversations. Visual Literacy alive! Students in Stage 2 and 3 have been learning about the impact that images can have on a reader/viewer. They’ve been studying the elements that composers use to try and position us (to make us think, feel or act on something). Very powerful stuff, indeed!

Students investigating texts...

AND… teachers have also been working hard.

Yesterday, a team of 10 staff worked together on analysing student writing samples. They examined writing books, looking for student skills and understandings that represent being “on track” for achieving at their stage.

We have developed a bank of writing samples, with notes to support high-quality, consistent teacher judgement. Very impressive!!

Finally—students have been learning about Reconciliation Week and about the ways in which we can share truths and walk together with courage. Ask your child about what they’ve learned.

Eid Mubarak!

This term KEora have been learning about their own history of their family. The unit allowed students opportunities to extend their learning by incorporating historical understanding and skills into real-life situations, routines and teachable moments. Students read stories and viewed pictures from other cultures and parts of the world. From this, students listened, discussed and recalled stories about their family. Students brought in a family photo and completed drawings to identify the family members and the uniqueness of their family structure. Students compared similarities and differences among each other’s families and discussed the important ways in which family provides the basic needs of love, food, shelter, clothing, companionship, and protection to their members. Teachers at GEPS work really hard to help our students develop social awareness skills, relationship skills, responsible decision making and self-management strategies.

We do this to assist students in explaining and understanding their feelings, know how their actions could make someone else feel and to develop strategies in dealing with their different emotions.

There are things that you can do at home to help your child think deeper about their day at school and to share their feelings. One way is asking good questions.

Here are 10 questions to ask your child instead of “How was your day?”

1. What was the best thing that happened at school today?

2. What was the hardest thing you had to do today?

3. Tell me something that made you laugh today.

4. Tell me about what you read in class today. What did your teacher read you today?

5. What part of school is your favourite?

6. What are you looking forward to at school tomorrow?

7. What subject do you like the best? Why?

8. Did anyone do something nice for you today?

9. Did you do something nice for someone?

10. If you were the teacher, what would you do with the class tomorrow?

I would love to hear your childs’ responses.

Please send responses to Mrs Mellish through the school email address or write them out and put them onto her desk.

Thank you to all the classes and the community warriors that helped with the

garden.

We would also like to thank everyone who took care of the worms. Also a big

thanks to the parents that purchased our fresh produce!

Many parents made healthy meals and sent us photos of their hard work. The winners of the

competition are Roman and Eden however it was really hard to choose the winner.

We hope everyone will continue cooking healthy meals at home.

Pritchard P dinner made with GEPS eggplant and spring onions …. yummmmmm

Each newsletter we’ll be having a problem of the week. Families can work together to solve this problem. Solve the problem in multiple ways and submit your answer to Ms Beede’s box in the office. We look forward to seeing your results!

School Fair Necklaces (from: nrich.maths.org/9692) Rob and Jennie were making necklaces to sell at the school fair. They decided to make them very mathematical. Each necklace was to have eight beads, four of one colour and four of another. And each had to be symmetrical similar to the one in the picture.

How many different necklaces could they make?

Can you find them all? How do you know there aren't any others?

What if they had 9 beads, five of one colour and four of another?
