    F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T

Greetings for 2010A Perfect Storm?I wish each of you a healthy and happy 2010.

We all eagerly look forward to a better economicclimate for our congregants, as well as for the restof Michigan and the our country in the upcomingyear. At the beginning of this New Year, I wish toalleviate some concerns and address other issuesthat relate to Temple Emanu-El.

First, Temple Emanu-El is a Reform Jewish syna-gogue uniquely positioned to ful ll the needs of Jewish congregants in the Southeast geographiclocale of Oakland County. While many of our congregants drive greater distances from Bloom-

eld Hills, Macomb County, Allen Park, Detroit,Commerce Township and even the Lansing areato our synagogue of choice, we have a signi cant

portion of the congregants who reside in Oak Park, South eld, Huntington Woods, Berkley,Ferndale and Royal Oak. The congregants viewTemple Emanu-El as not only their ReformJewish congregation but also as the local neigh-

borhood synagogue. A strong need exists for aReform Jewish congregation geographically rightwhere it is. We are here to stay.

Second, in my 2009 High Holiday presentationI stated that our Temple meets the needs of allour congregants with many different aspects of Jewish life. We provide religious services withfull-time clergy year round including Shabbatservices, High Holiday and other holiday ser-vices. We provide our children education from thetime of infancy to, and through, high school. We

attend to life cycle events, including celebrationsand times of need. We offer adult education class-es, weekly Torah Study and social events. Mostevents and activities take place within our build-ing which has been maintained and improvedover so many years. Indeed all this takes moneyand we may have a severe issue in the near futureful lling all of these needs our congregation nowenjoys.

A number of factors have placed a signi cantstrain on the nances of our Temple. I looked up

perfect storm to seeif the term was aproposto my article. A perfectstorm describes an eventwhere a rare combina-tion of circumstanceswill aggravate a situationdrastically. The economic debacle of September 2008 that struck the banking, real estate andautomobile industry has also delivered a punchto our Temple and its congregants. Besidesthis nancial debacle, the ongoing recessionhas hurt. It is not just the depth of the reces-sion now that we are feeling, but it is the lengthof the recession as well. We are going into thethird year on a national level and approaching adecade for the State of Michigan. In addition tothe severe economic strain that has directly af-fected a number of our congregational families,we have former congregants who have moved

away to seek better economic opportunities. Wealso recognize that in the last few years we haveseen a number of baby boomer/empty nestersleave our Temple for reasons other than mov-ing away. Furthermore, the demographics of theyoung adult Jewish community clearly showthat many of our youth have left the Michiganarea to seek a career elsewhere. Without goinginto the details of the demographics but goingto the bottom line, we see that there is not thenumber of young Reform Jewish families in thelocal area to maintain our numbers up to the his-

torical levels of the past. I believe the numbershave stabilized but the number of congregants islower than in the historic past.

While the nancial and membership concernsare real and troubling for me, I do not want tounnecessarily alarm people. Our Temple has

been ahead of other congregations in address-ing many costs, expenses and programs. Whilethe recognition that other synagogues and other non-pro ts also have nancial dif culties is

TEMPLE EMANU-EL: WHERE YOU BELONG 248-967-4020

Rabbi Joseph P. Klein Cantor Darcie N. Sharle

    C A N T O R S N O T E S

On January 18, 1952 The Suburban Templeof Greater Detroit held its rst Friday NightSabbath Service, at Burton School, with a

borrowed ark from Temple Beth El, usingcopies of the Union Prayer Book , borrowedfrom both Temple Beth El and Temple Israel.

58 years later The Suburban Temple of Greater Detroit is Temple Emanu-El of Oak Park. We will honor our congregational anni-versary on Friday night, January 15, using theUnion Prayer Book , with music from our Shir Chadash Choir. As we begin our 59th year,we look back and honor the lay and clergy

leadership who brought us here. The pictures of our past presidents aredisplayed on the wall outside the library, along with the picturesof Rabbi Frank Rosenthal, Rabbi Milton Rosenbaum, Rabbi LaneSteinger, and Cantor Norman Rose.

When Rabbi Rosenbaum spoke to our membership on the 25th Anni-versary of our congregation, he said: Our Sages [taught] the conceptof Zechut Avot , the merit of the ancestors. They noted that those whowent before us established a fund of merit by their good deeds, whichcontinue as our strength and give us a virtue we ourselves have notearned. The same principle applies to the life of our congregation, for its founders gave us an example of their own devotion, comrade-ship and willing labors to build our Temple physically and spiritually. We inherit their achievements and are grateful that many of them arestill among us so that we may pro t by their example and build for our children after us, while we gain the sustenance of our faith in our congregation.

Our congregation in 2010 is in ways very different from the one RabbiRosenbaum addressed in 1977, to say nothing of the group who sat onfolding chairs in Burton School in 1952. But as different as it is for usin 2010, the values and standards with which those few families cametogether, still de ne and describe us today.

I hope that you will join us on Friday night, January 15 for our An-niversary Sabbath. Cantor Sharlein and our choir and pipe organ willhelp us remember the music of years ago, and our worship will followthe Union Prayer Book. Of course the rabbi and cantor will have headscovered and the women in the congregation will not, but we will other-wise try to capture the essence of what our worship once was.

We must never forget the stories of those who but a few generationsago brought us here. Our history and heritage are tied directly to thosefew families on folding chairs using borrowed prayerbooks. It is ap-propriate, I think, to honor their memories with these words with whichReform Rabbis introduced Kaddish for so many years: The departedwhom we now remember still live on earth in the acts of goodnessthey performed and in the hearts of those who cherish their memory.Zichronam livracha , their memories are our blessing.

Singing Our Storyof FreedomStories are one of the mostimportant ways we shareabout ourselves. When we tellour own personal stories, our families stories, or those of our Jewish heritage, we teachourselves and others about theevents that have shaped us. Of-ten, these stories are a windowinto our values and beliefs andour very outlook on life.

At the end of January we will share one of thoseseminal stories as our Torah cycle takes us to thecrossing of the Red Sea our moment of delivery

from slavery in Egypt. Standing on safetys shore, our people has been changed. Our memory of slavery, andour taste of freedom, continue to shape how we actin the world: standing up against injustice, workingon behalf of the oppressed, remaining grateful andhopeful that miracles whether created by God or byus can occur.

Our rst moments of freedom are marked in the Torahwith a shir , which can be translated as song or poem. Called Shirat Hayam , the Song of the Sea,this poem celebrating Gods might and majesty wassung by Moses, Miriam, and all the Israelites. Its im-

portance is highlighted both by the way it is written inthe Torah scroll it is offset from the rest of the textwith unique word spacing and the way it is chanted. There is a special festive melody, different fromour everyday system for chanting Torah, that is usedfor the Song. On Shabbat morning, January 30, I willuse the festive melody from the Sephardi tradition tochant Shirat Hayam (on the seventh day of Pesach, when we revisit this Torah portion, Frank Castronovawill chant it using the Ashkenazi festive melody).

In honor of the reading of Shirat Hayam , theShabbat on which it is read has come to be calledShabbat Shirah , the Sabbath of Song. It is seen as atime to highlight music within the worship service, which we will do on Shabbat evening, January 29.

I hope you will join us on Shabbat Shirah , both for the special music service on Friday night and thespecial Torah reading on Saturday morning, as we usesong to celebrate our peoples story of freedom.

not a great relief for me, I believe we willovercome the present

nancial stress. Wehave great programs, agreat Early ChildhoodCenter and a greatreligious school. Asgood as our programs

are, we are addressing the recognized needfor speci c programs for our baby boomer/empty nesters. We see a continued need for a Reform Jewish congregation in our geo-graphic area serving the wide range of agesand diverse families in our metropolitanDetroit area. We are now in the process of creatively looking at solutions to correlate thecosts of Temple with the congregational sizeand its nancial means. While some of thesedecisions will be dif cult to hammer out anddif cult to implement, the Board of Trusteesis and will do what it sees as necessary.

Part of the solution is a greater emphasis onfundraising for our Temple and we will letyou know what fundraisers will be forthcom-ing. Our last annual fundraiser Emanu-Elat our Tables was wonderful. Besides the

money we raised to help Temple, we had asigni cant portion of our adult congregantsengaged and by all accounts, everyone hada good time. When we announce futurefundraisers and other plans, please remember the importance of such success and pleasecontribute to your ability. I again ask thatyou need not wait for any fundraiser, butstep up if you can to help solve this scalyears nancial situation. Temple Emanu-Elcontinues to remain a vibrant Reform Jewishsynagogue with an engaged congregation. Please contact me or any of our professionalstaff, of cers or board members to shareyour comments, ideas or other input you mayhave. S M A L L T A L K

Heres wishing everyone an upcom-ing year of good health and peace. TheTemple Emanu-El Early ChildhoodCommunity will resume classes onMonday, January 4th, following a welldeserved (and much needed) winter

    break.

As winter continues, the Nursery of cesare busy preparing for camp. Like thefashion industry, we are always a season

ahead. Once again, our camp will be offered for nine weeksto children ages 18 months through age 6. Packets will besent home at the end of January for camp which beginsMonday, June 14th, as well as materials for the 2010-2011school year.

We welcome several new babies to our Infant Program. When parents tour the facility they are in awe of both the

physical layout of the rooms and the warmth and assurancethey immediately feel from our nurturing staff. It is our hope that this is just the beginning of a long term relation-ship between these families, the ECC and Temple.

Michaelyn Silverman, Rachel Katz and Viktoriya Frasinichrepresented our school at the Early Childhood EducationConference, sponsored by the Agency for Jewish Educa-tion. The key note address was How to Handle Hard-to-Handle Preschoolers. Marilyn Appelbaum, of the Appel-

For Fiction ReadersOccasionally I devote some space to a particularlyinteresting book Ive come across. Because I soadmired Mary Doria Russells A Thread of Grace,I checked her book The Sparrow out of the li-

brary. Ms. Russell calls The Sparrow a specula-tive novel. Im not usually a science ction fan,

but found this book unique and intriguing. She is a paleo-anthropologist known for work on cannibalismand craniofacial biomechanics and that backgroundcomes into play. Religion has a central role as shefollows a Jesuit-sponsored mission (which includesa Sephardic Jew) to a planet from which they have

picked up signs of intelligent life. The author is a Jew by choice. Raised Catholic, she left the church at age15 and after 20 years of contented atheism foundthat becoming a mother made her realize her ethicsand morality were rooted in religion and was drawnto Judaism. Ms. Russell said writing The Sparrow

allowed her to look at the place of religion in thelives of many people and to weigh the risks and the

    beauties of religious belief

Nowadays many books include author interviews. Iwas intrigued by what Ms. Russell wrote about themoral of this book and what that says to us as ReformJews living in complex and trying times. Maybeits even if you do the best you can, you still getscrewed. We seem to believe that if we act in ac-cordance with our understanding of Gods will, weought to be rewarded. But in doing so were makinga deal that God didnt sign on toif you read Torah, you realize that God has a lot to answer for. God is acomplex personality. I wanted to explore that com-

plexity and that moral ambiguity. God gives us rules but those are rules for us, not for God.

On one Saturday in October andtwo in November, Temple Emanu-El embarked on a new fundraisingidea to bring much needed dollarsin the door. The idea for the events, called Emanu-El At our Tables(E.A.T. for short) was brought tous by Cantor and Jeff Sharleinwho had participated in a similar fundraiser for their congregation in Brooklyn.

All told, 13 events were hosted by 38 members. Close to 160 peopleattended and we raised $13,000. While we fell short of our monetary

goal of $20,000, we achieved our goal of strengthening our connec-tions with each other and our commitment to Temple. The responseshave been fantastic and we are already planning next years events.

Thank you to our generous hosts and to all of you who gave of your time and money to make this fundraiser such a tremendous success. We hope youll join us next year!

Thanks again to Elissa Driker-Ohren and Amy Wise for co-chairingour wonderful At Our Tables Fundraiser, with the able assistanceof Michael Benghiat. We wish to recognize and thank all our creativeand generous hosts:
