Dusan and Platt recently dropped by the RPM offices to talk about the Warriors project and how it came to be. Dusan's motivation is quite simple. "The thinking in Yugoslavia is different," he explains, con- tinuing with, "It's not rock and roll; I listened more to western music than to Yugoslavian music." Coupled with this feeling was Dusan's insistence that the original version of Warriors (in Yugoslavia) sing in English. He believed the band's ap- peal would be much broader. Roll `n Rock enters growing trivia market

The Oakville, Ontario -based Universal Dis- tributors is the manufacturerand distributor

of the latest entry in the burgeoning trivia game market.

The Roll 'n' Rock board game is the brainchild of 3 music buffs

- David Hunter, Michael Simone, and John Sakamoto - and features over 3,000 questions on rock and

roll from the '50s through to the present. The game's questions were conceived

by the 3 inventors with assistance from 3 outside music consultants - including

Lee Carter, host of CFNY-FM's (Toronto) The London Report.

The initial production run for the game was 10,000 units in Canada. The Ungame Co. of Placentia, California, is licensed to

manufacture and distribute the game in the U.S. Advertising and promotion has

been handled by Universal Distributors and The Ungame Co. in conjunction with Roll

'n' Rock, the company formed by the investors.

Elton John In Toronto receives WEA platinum for Breaking Hearts and last year's

Too Low For Zero from Garry Newman and Roger Desjardins.

Bannon was designated product manager and CBS began signing acts. Bannon points out that the line is all -Canadian, and will

more than likely remain so. The Kiddin' Round label is signed

direct to CBS Records, with Kiddin' Round existing as a trademark for CBS. Three more releases areplanned for early next year. CBS will position children's product as

a year-round consideration, not simply a Christmas line. Bannorl believes that other

major labels will assess the impact of CBS product in the market, and make decisions re- garding their own opportunities accordingly.

Honeymoon Suite release coincides with major tour

WEA recording act Honeymoon Suite, cur- rently on a 3 -date tour assupport for Jethro

Tull, are on release with the second single from their self -titled debut album.

Burning In Love is the follow-up to New Girl Now, which went Top 10 in major U.S. trades and Top 20 in important radio

markets across the U.S. For Burning In Love, acknowledged by

many to be the LP's strongest track, Cana- dian radio delivered 27 playlists in the first

week of release. A video for the single, filmed in the band's hometown of Niagara Falls, Ontario, directed by Rob Quartly of

Champagne Pictures is near completion at press time.

Honeymoon Suite's recent Canadian tour was supported by Vancouver's A&B

Sound and CFOX, both of whom hosted the Honeymoon Suite -stakes - sending

winners to Hawaii for a 3 -day stay in a honeymoom suite. Kelly's, in Calgary,

featured the band at their Sounds Savings Explosion, an annual stereo/music/video

event. Radio promotions and retail display contests also took place in Quebec City,

Winnipeg, Regina, Thunder Bay, and Toron- to. On Nov. 2, New Girl Now will be heard on the soundtrack of the American action

TVer Miami Vice.

The band will be up for 2 awards at the 1984 Junos, for Best Album Art, and Most

Promising New Group.

Tour and film work for WEA's Metheny

The Pat Metheny Group, fronted by re- nowned jazz guitarist Pat Metheny, is

currently touring North America. The First Circle Tour coincides with the recent re- lease of the group's LP, First Circle, re-

leased on the WEA label. There was only one Canadian date for the tour, which

was the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in -Van- couver (Oct. 28).

Metheny recently completed work with David Bowie on the title track for John

Schlesinger's new film, The Falcon And The Snowman.

Metheny, with assistance from writing and performing partner Lyle Mays, was

contracted to compose and record the soundtrack in its entirety.

memorable releases. These include My Generation, I Can't Explain, Substitute,

Behind Blue Eyes, Boris The Spider, Who Are You, and Pinball Wizard, to name just

A break with tradition for Lightfoot dates WEA recording artist Gordon Lightfoot, re-

nowned for his yearly stand at Toronto's Massey Hall, will break with tradition in

1985 by performing his dates in November instead of March. The change was reportedly made to

accommodate recording sessions for a new album pencilled in for a mid -1985 release.

The Massey Hall dates confirmed for 1985 are Nov. 15, 16, 17, 21, 22, and 23.

A bash with class!!!The MCA Halloween Party at the CelebrityDining Lounge was a very nice event ... onewith class. The food, served up by BobRowe himself, was exceptional. The high-light of the evening was the prizes for thebest costumes. The Garbage Bag lady anda couple of Martians took home the prizesof a VCR and a Compact Disc player. Thejudging was very difficult ... I never saw somany great costumes (EC: I went as myselfand nobody noticed me!!!)What is ACME doing . . . ?While most of Nashville is preparing to go toMIDEM to sell their masters and songs, theCanadian country business is sitting backscratching their heads, not knowing what todo. at Hamilton Place (Dec. 6), has been nomin- ated for 5 Junos this year.

Hall & Oates, the most popular duo in rock and roll history, have exploded with

Bigbamboom. Out Of Touch, their 14th Top 40 single, has been shooting up the

charts in North America, with excellent FM

support as well. The pair just completed the Out Of Touch video, directed by MTV

award -winner Jeff Stein. White Wolf just completed shooting the

video for Shadows In The Night. It was shot in Toronto and produced by Pretty Pic-

tures. There's a lot of positive feeling about this group in New York. They will be play- ing Winnipeg Nov. 5 to 10, and there are

dates for this neck of the woods (Toronto) as well.

Get It While You Can by Gary 0' is continuing to receive strong radio and press

support. Gary's video for the song was shot at the Massey Ferguson building by

Champagne Productions and will be avail- able shortly. An interesting cover version of

Gary's What's It Gonna Take, has been chosen as the first single from the Fast

Forward Project. The song had been covered earlier by Molly Hatchett.

The Pointer Sisters' Break Out album has been certified platinum. The single Jump, is

certified gold, while I'm So Excited, is working its way into the Top 10 in Canada

and the U.S. The video for this single is currently in hot rotation on MuchMusic.

Lastly, Diana Ross is sweeping the continent with Swept Away. Her new hit

has already attained Top 10 status within 3 weeks of release. Album sales are nearing

platinum in Canada.

THE PARACHUTE CLUB - PopAt The Feet Of The MoonRCA KK L 1-0553-NProducer Michael BeInhorn of Rockit famehas given the Club the melodic punch andstrength in arrangements that a sophomoreeffort demands. This is surely the record tobreak the band internationally - removingany hint of 'one-off' success or a musicians'band that may not be in it for the long term.Strong and varied writing, topnotch pro-duction, and an assimilable image - essentialin the video -dominated market currently -combine here to produce a first class effort.Key is the title track, released as a single.Produced at Toronto's Sounds Interchange.Colourful jacket demands front -racking.

JULIAN LENNON - PopValotte - Atlantic - 78-01841-PDebut LP from the 21 -year old son of thelate John Lennon. Valotte taken as thefirst single. Produced by Phil Ramone.

THE RIVER RATOriginal Movie SoundtrackRCA - CBL1-5310-NTop country programming with tracks byAlabama, Earl Thomas Conley, Bill Medley, and Deborah Allen. Produced by MikePost. Key are Rock On The Bayou byAlabama and Halfway Right by DeborahAllen.

- Country

MURRAY McLAUCHLAN - CountryHeroes - True North TN59-HA bit of a departure from Canada's bestknown concrete cowboy. The release hasbeen plumped up through McLauchlan'sTimberline series on CBC Radio (VarietyTonight). Heroes is more country thanwhat we have been used to, certainly morethan Boulevard. Key is Railroad Man,taken as the first single and making in-teresting moves up the RPM Country 60.This track is top priority with its graphiclyrics and pedal steel/fiddle breaks. All12 tracks are McLauchlan originals andwritten about what has been categorized as"ordinary people who are not so ordinary".Arguably one of the finest songwritersCanada has ever produced, McLauchlan

FEE WAYBILL - PopRead My Lips - Capitol - ST -12369-FDebut solo LP from Tubes lead singerWaybill. You're Still Laughing taken asfirst single. Produced by David Foster.

RICKY SKAGGS - CountryCountry Boy - Epic - FE -39410-HCountry programmers have already pickedthis self -produced package as a hit. Muchmore attention will be given the albumwith the release of Something In My Heartas the first single. Also key are the titletrack and Brand New Me.

JETHRO TULL - PopUnder Wraps - Chrysalis - CHS-41461-JPropelled by vocalist/flautist Ian Anderson,Tull bring their quirky, baroque sound intothe '80s with a set of tunes revealing Ander-sons's predictable eclecticism. Key is Lap OfLuxury, big -beat synthesizer -laden AORfodder. Produced by Anderson "at home".

produced this session on his own. The flip of the single, Sayonara Maverick will

draw the attention of CHR and A/C pro- grammers. Suitably rustic jacket photo.

FEE WAYBILL -

Pop Read My Lips

- Capitol

- ST -12369-F

Debut solo LP from Tubes lead singer Waybill. You're Still Laughing taken as

first single. Produced by David Foster.

RICKY SKAGGS - Country Country Boy

- Epic

- FE -39410-H

Country programmers have already picked this self -produced package as a hit. Much

more attention will be given the album with the release of Something In My Heart

as the first single. Also key are the title track and Brand New Me.

JETHRO TULL -

Pop Under Wraps

- Chrysalis

- CHS.41461-J

Propelled by vocalist/flautist Ian Anderson, Tull bring their quirky, baroque sound into the '80s with a set of tunes revealing Ander-

sons's predictable eclecticism. Key is Lap Of Luxury, big -beat synthesizer -laden AOR fodder. Produced by Anderson "at home".

THE WILD LIFE -

Rock Original Soundtrack

- MCA

- 5523-J

Film soundtrack featuring guitarist Eddy Van Halen, Policeman Andy Summers, and

Canada's Hanover Fist. Various production credits. Key is Donut City.

are represented here including Alabama with Rock On The Bayou, Halfway Right

by Deborah Allen, and Maybe Next Time by Bill Medley. The music tracks were

produced by Mike Post, who also does a good vocal job on The Boat.

Nelson & Kristofferson together The latest in the rash of country duos

is the teaming of Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson on the Music From Song-

writer LP. The first single from the album, How Do You Feel About Foolin' Around,

Lord gaining national airplay with Comstock LP

Anne Lord is experiencing impressive national action on her new album, End-

lessly, released on the Shawnee, Kansas - based Comstock label, which is one of the

top 5 independent labels in the U.S. Corn - stock handles product distribution as well

as promotion and record tracking for its artists.

Lord, and husband Roger (who played bass for Lord, and is currently her co - writer), recently dropped by the RPM

placed 4 singles in the market. Her fifth single, Nobody Said, looks like a good

bet to follow the success of her previous efforts, all of which hit the U.S. trade,

Cashbox. The album is a pick currently in Vancouver, Calgary, and Ottawa.

Endlessly was produced by Peter Berring at Vancouver's Little Mountain Sound and

qualifies as 4 -parts Cancon. The session featured Berring on key- boards, Lord's husband Roger on bass,

and Bryan Adams co-hort Jim Valiance on drums, plus guitarists Terry Frewer and

Dave Sinclair. Background vocals are sup- plied by Nancy Nash, Mary Saxton, Peter

Clarke, and Paul Janz. Lord's songs are currently popular in

parts of the U.K. and Europe. She credits the international flavour of her material for this interest. The British Forces radio

network as well as BBC Radio are pro- gramming tracks from Endlessly.

Two tracks popular among those who have heard the album in Germany, are Up The Wall, and Hung Up On You.

mers. Kristofferson is a much better writer than he is a singer and Willie is straining on this one to carry the full load.

Youngblood penning for Jacks' single Susan Jacks, best known as one half of the Poppy Family over a decade ago, is on release with her new Compleat single,

Another Woman's Man. The Kenneth Youngblood composition was produced in

Nashville by Glenn Sutton. Jacks, a native of Vancouver, recently

moved to Nashville, where she apparently feels that she'll be closer to "the movers and shakers" of the record business.

The Poppy Family enjoyed success in the early '70s with hits such as Which Way

You Goin' Billy?, Where Evil Grows, and That's Where I Belong.

Belair promo muscle launches Cyril Way

Bob Cousins has launched the career of Cyril Way, a new signing to his Belair label. The Way single, Pour Me A Double (I'm Single Again) was written and

produced by Bob Segarini at the old .SST Studios in Brampton.

Way has since been working at Orchard Studio, putting together an album. Much

of the album will comprise Wray origi- nals, however, he is looking for good

country compositions. Those interested should contact Cousins at the Belair

label. Way is backed by his Round Midnight

group, made up of lead guitarists Harris Lusker, drummer Colin Walker, bassist

Chris Nickloff, and Chris Martino on key- boards. Way, besides lead singer, doubles

on accordion, guitar, and harmonica. The group play the Brampton Hotel from Octo. 25 through the 27th and the follow-

ing weekend (Nov. 1 through 3) are at Doyles on the Danforth (Toronto).

A native of St. John's Newfoundland, Way now makes his home in Toronto.

It was 8 years ago when he tried his hand at the recording business, releasing a single

titled Newfie Joe, which was a favourite with his native Islanders. He has spent

his time since that release, playing clubs and concerts, primarily in Ontario and at one recent concert in Tottenham drew a

crowd of more than 1,500. The flip of the Way single, Uncommon

Sense, is also a Segarini original, co -pro- duced by Segarini and Drew Winters.
