OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

CONTROLS

The Quick-Change mechanism speeds up threading and every lathe operation requiring power feed by providing instant fingertip selec­tion of fifty-four threads or feeds ­ forty-five are obtained by merely shifting two levers on the gear box, and an additional nine by changing the position of a sliding gear. A direct reading index plate mounted on front of gear box shows lever and gear positions.

By varying the gear train with standard Atlas change gears thousands of additional threads and feeds are available for such jobs as metric thread­ing, coil and wire winding and special tooling. Change gear set-ups are shown on Pages 7 to 72.

Left Hand Quick-Change Lever - shifts to five positions ­

A, B, C, D, and E - shown on left end of chart. The posi­

tion of the lever is indicated at the left end of the row of

numbers in which you find the thread or feed desired.

Right Hand Quick-Change Lever - shifts to nine positions.

They are numbered on bottom row of chart beneath carriage

feeds. The indexing position of the lever is always directly

below the thread or feed desired.

C. Reverse Tumbler Lever - has three index positions _ for­ward, neutral, and reverse - with standard Quick-Change gear train, top position feeds carriage to the left and cross­slide toward the operator, bottom position feeds carriage to the right and cross-slide away from operator.

D. Sliding Gear - has two positions - IN and OUT as shown on the chart. IN position is toward headstock and meshes with the 32 tooth compound gear, see Figure 2. OUT posi­tion, Figure 3, is away from headstock and meshes with the 16 tooth compound gear. Loosen T -clamp to mesh the slid­ing gear with the compound tumbler gear. The position of the sliding gear is shown on the chart in the same row as the thread or feed desired.

E. T -Clamp - controls the gear quadrant. Loosen clamp to mesh sliding gear with the compound tumbler gear.

READING THE QUICK-CHANGE CHART (See Figure 4)

Threads per Inch - forty-five standard threads are shown on Quick-Change chart. Nine additional threads, correspond­ing to the bottom row of carriage feeds, are also available; they are: 128, 144, 160, 176, 184, 192, 208, 224, and 240. Feeds for the forty-five threads are shown in Table I, Page 7.

Carriage Feeds - shown on bottom of chart. Nine feeds are listed - .0078" to .0042" per revolution of spindle. Corres­ponding threads are shown in Table I, Page 7 or above under Threads per Inch.

Left Hand Lever Position - shown in first column of chart. Lever has five indexing positions - A, B, C, D, and E. ODD AND METRIC THREADS AND FEEDS. WIRE AND COIL WINDING

Thousands of odd threads, metric threads, and feeds for coil winding and special tooling can be obtained using standard Atlas change gears on the Quick-Change quadrant in place of the slid­ing gear and the two 48 tooth gears. All of the following tables use standard change gears to make up the gear train. Additional change gears or stud assemblies necessary to make up the gear train are available from the factory.

When cutting metric threads and fractional threads (except half numbered threads, such as 6-1/2, 8-1/2, 11-1/2, etc., per inch) use the following cutting method: After the half-nut lever is lowered and the half-nuts engaged for the first cut, the lever should not be moved until the thread is completed. Back out the tool when it reaches the end of the thread cut, reverse the motor and return carriage to its starting position. Advance tool for repeat cut, continue operation until thread is completed.
