African Leadership Academy (ALA) is the foremost pan-African leadershipdevelopment institution established to transform Africa by developing apowerful network of ethical entrepreneurial leaders who will work togetherto address Africa’s greatest challenges, achieve extraordinary social impactand accelerate the continent’s growth trajectory. Through a world-class program centered on Entrepreneurial Leadership,the Academy has trained nearly a thousand young leaders from 46 Africancountries in our flagship pre-university Diploma program and now sits atthe forefront of developing impactful young leaders with the mindset, skillsand networks to effect wide-scale change across the world. The uniqueness of African Leadership Academy lies in the diversity of ourprogram participants and facilitators. ALA brings together some of theworld’s most influential leadership, entrepreneurship and educationexperts to shape the content and delivery of our curriculum, and weconsistently attract participants from all over Africa, Europe, Asia, Northand South America for our global programs.

ALA’ s Global Programs are a set of education programs whichare designed to expand the Academy’s reach to young globalleaders and the educators who support them. Through theseprograms, participants gain hands-on experience learningfrom ALA's outstanding curriculum and faculty, live in avibrant and diverse community, expand their global networksand develop new skills to enable them to lead lives of impact.

GLOBAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Built around ALA’s Entrepreneurial Leadership and African Studies curricula, our summer programs engage young leaders aged 13-19 from around the world in social entrepreneurship, design thinking, leadership training, adventure, and cross-cultural exchange. Every summer, hundreds of young leaders arrive inJohannesburg for GSP, getting the chance to practice leadership by advising social ventures, learning fromyoung entrepreneurs, developing skills through team-based challenges and building their global network, whilediscovering the history, beauty, and diversity of South Africa.

The premier summer camp experience in Africa for teens aged 13 - 19

A series of excursions take participants on adventures toencounter fascinating African wildlife, explore South Africa’srich history and culture, and enjoy the vibrant city life ofmodern Johannesburg. Create treasured memories in thisbeautifully diverse country.

Safety, Security & Health atAfrican Leadership Academy

ALA’s campus is nestled in the quiet and leafy Honeydew suburb of Johannesburg, offering the perfect environment for fun, focus andlearning. The campus revolves around a lush quad, and features ourresidence halls, sports facilities, auditorium, dining hall, and the PardeeLearning Commons. This state-of-the-art building provides a light-filled,multidisciplinary space for working and learning. The safety and security of our participants is our top priority. The ALAcampus has a strict access policy and 24/7 security. Our residence halls areprotected by a biometric system, which limits entry to residents of eachhall, our head of security, who lives on campus, and his team haveextensive experience and have worked in school environments for manyyears. A nurse and wellness team are also on-site. Our dining hall offers vegetarian, vegan, and Halal options during mealsand we work with individuals to accommodate specific allergies or otherdietary restrictions. Tap water is clean and safe to drink, and Johannesburgis known as a malaria-free area.

CATALYST TERM

Catalyst Term is an experiential learning, school-based certificate program for students from across the worldbetween the ages of 15-19, enabling them to develop into catalysts of positive global change. This transformativeexperience incorporates design thinking, leadership training, social and small-business entrepreneurship, rigorousacademics, adventure, and cross-cultural exchange. Students develop a deep understanding of the Africancontinent, strengthen core academic skills, and experience personal growth and independence through guided real-world experiences. At Catalyst Term, students from the United States, LatinAmerica, Europe, and Asia join their counterparts from Africaon the ALA campus. Experience unparallelled diversity  byliving, studying, and exploring with 240 peers from more than30 African countries. ALA students are native speakers of over30 languages and represent most major faith traditions.Faculty also come from across Africa and around the world,bringing varied perspectives and life experiences to campus. Campus life includes sharing a dorm room with an Africanpeer, daily community meals, student-led clubs, sports, artsand music, cultural exchange nights, guest speakers, andmore! Students also discover the history, beauty and diversityof Africa through off-campus expeditions.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Catalyst creates the opportunity to learn from entrepreneurswho are tackling the challenges of post-Apartheid SouthAfrica. They examine issues of global importance –conservation, education, urban development, and health –and innovative approaches from across the region. Studentsleave with the skills, knowledge, confidence and connectionsto start making change in Africa, and back home. Our most successful Catalyst Term participants are thosewho seek deep engagement in the study of  the Africancontinent, want the challenge of  contributing to a teamenterprise, and are open to a transformative journey that willfoster personal growth and life-long relationships.

All Catalyst students will take three core classes - AfricanStudies, Writing & Rhetoric, and Entrepreneurial Leadership.These are ALA’s flagship courses, and they are at the core ofcampus academics. In addition to those three subjects, they will also choose twoelectives, with options ranging from French to Politics,Literature to Chemistry, and more! ALA will work with thesestudents and their home schools as needed to help themobtain any necessary credits. University Guidance servicesare available to all Catalyst Term students along with accessto SAT prep and testing.

HOW DOES ALAMAU WORK?

ALA MODEL AFRICAN UNION

African Leadership Academy Model African Union (ALAMAU) is an annual leadership conference for young leadersfrom around the world, simulating the activities of the African Union. This one-of-a-kind program is unique to ALA.It was established in 2013 as a platform for young leaders to develop real-world solutions to African developmentchallenges through diplomacy and international cooperation, in a format inspired by the Model United Nations andthe African Union.

Delegates to ALAMAU serve as representatives of various Africangovernments on agencies of the African Union, affording themthe opportunity to study complex African issues, understand thepositions of African countries, and learn to successfully negotiatewithout compromising national interests. The conference aims toempower young leaders to model international cooperation fordevelopment while celebrating diversity. The five-day experience is centered around high-level debatesand negotiations. At ALAMAU, multiple agencies and subsidiarybodies of the African Union (AU) are simulated, puttingparticipants in the shoes of the diplomats who are responsiblefor driving pan-African cooperation. For instance, a delegatecould represent Egypt on the Peace and Security Council, orRwanda on the African Energy Commission. During each committee session, participants deliver speechesand negotiate, with the ultimate goal of drafting a resolution anda comprehensive action plan outlining the timeline and strategyfor implementing the solutions proposed. Prior to theconference, delegates study  their assigned countries and topics,ensuring that they make well-informed recommendations thatwill promote development across the continent.

SPECIAL PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Diplomatic Roundtable: Talks by African Union officials andmulti-sectoral experts, including a diplomatic roundtablefeaturing Ambassadors from several countries.Cultural Night: A cultural night celebrating the continent’sdiversity and brings delegates together with a fusion of music,food, fashion, and dance.Explore Johannesburg: Educational tours to historic sites inJohannesburg such as Nelson Mandela’s home, the ApartheidMuseum, Vilakazi Street, the Mall of Africa, and nearby naturepreserves.Faculty Advisor Sessions: Parallel conference sessions foreducators, involving roundtable discussions with thought-leaders, and opportunities to learn more about critical issues onthe African continent.
