5. Qui sunt fortiores, Galli aut Helvetii? The Helvetii

Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres, quarum unam incolunt Belgae, aliam Aquitani, tertiam ei qui ipsorum lingua Celtae, nostra Galli appellantur. Hi omnes lingua, institutis, legibus inter se differunt. Gallos ab Aquitanis Garunna flumen, a Belgis Matrona et Sequana dividit.

Gaul is all divided into three parts, one which the Belgians inhabit, another the Aquitanians, third who call themselves Celts in their language, we call them Gauls. All these languages, establishments , laws differ among one another. Gaul divides from Aquitanians by the Garonne river, the Belgians by the Marne and the Seine.

Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae, propterea quod a cultu atque humanitate Provinciae longissime absunt, minimeque saepe mercatores ad eos veniunt atque ea quae ad effeminandos animos pertinent important. Proximi sunt Germanis qui trans Rhenum incolunt, quibuscum semper bellum gerunt. Qua de causa Helvetii quoque reliquos Gallos virtute superant, quod fere cotidianis proeliis cum Germanis contendunt, cum* aut suis finibus eos prohibent aut ipsi in eorum finibus bellum gerunt.

The bravest of these all are the Belgians, on this account because they are the farthest away from the culture and

humanity of the Province, and the merchants least often come to them and bring those things that pertain to emasculating their spirit. They are very close to the Germans who have settled on the far side of the Rhine and they are always waging war. The reason the Helvetians also surpass the remaining Guals by power is because by battling almost daily they contend with the Germans, when they are either restraining them from their own lands, or are themselves waging war in their Lands.
