Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII)

Bookkeepers require PII to protect themselves, ICB Members require PII to be in practice and BAS Agents require PII to be registered.

Insurance Made Easy (IME) have worked with us and the underwriters (Chubb) to customise a specialised policy for everything an ICB bookkeeper requires coverage. For more details regarding the ICB/IME Policy please refer to page 22 of this guide.

Cyber Insurance

We are now extremely reliant upon the internet and the cloud. As a bookkeeper this means that you carry much responsibility to protect your client’s data, privacy and access to banking. So for you, the thoughts around “what if” are becoming increasingly important. The good news is that your IME/Chubb Professional Indemnity covers most of these “what if’s”.

Your IME / ICB PII covers you for “your professional duty as a bookkeeper”, and this special policy includes cloud computing and therefore includes elements of “Cyber Security”. IME have also obtained an “Endorsement” in the ICB / IME policy to extend the cover for ICB members.

HR Intermediary

The Bookkeepers role as an HR intermediary and provision of HR advice is developing. Bookkeepers are involved in the provision of Payroll services that typically expand into Award interpretation and application of the Fair Work laws.

If a bookkeeper completes work on behalf of their client and errors were made which result in a financial loss to the client and subsequent claim for compensation, this is covered by the standard IME Professional Indemnity cover. If the negligent act is also a breach of government regulations the bookkeeper may incur a fine or penalty. This may include innocent breaches of government regulations including Federal, State, Local and Specialist Government bodies such as Fair Work, Tax Practitioners Board and the ATO.

Payroll Services

A bookkeeper typically is involved in Payroll. Some policies exclude even the most basic of payroll duties from a Bookkeepers PII. The IME Policy includes payroll services and then allows extension into the HR Intermediary role discussed above.

Other Insurance

IME offers all sorts of Insurance cover that you may need. We recommend that you contact Insurance Made Easy on 1800 641 260. Some of the additional insurance policies covered by IME include:

§ General Property Insurance § Public and Product Liability Insurance

What is Professional Indemnity Insurance?

Professional indemnity insurance provides cover for claims brought against the policy holder due to their professional negligence.

Professional Indemnity insurance protects a professional from financial loss, injury or damage arising from a mistake or failure by the professional to exercise the required level of skill. This may mean that an award is made in favour of a person who suffers a loss, damage or injury. A professional may also be held to be liable for a mistake even though there was no negligence.

Therefore, if a professional holds themselves out as having a special skill, which can be relied upon by another, they should consider Professional Indemnity Insurance as crucial.

Professional Indemnity Insurance, other than just being logical, is required for all members of ICB who are in the business of providing bookkeeping services. A professional bookkeeper is assisted in establishing their credibility through being able to state that they are insured.

PI insurance is not just about you protecting your client, but also yourself in the case of error.

Do you Need PII?

The TPB notice appears to deal with so many legal intricacies that it is hard to work out whether you are in or not. Let us keep it simple:

§ If you personally, or you are in a business where you, provide BAS Services to external clients then you must be covered by a Professional Indemnity Insurance policy and you will need to tell the TPB

§ If you are a BAS Agent but you only provide BAS Services to your employer then you are not required to have Professional Indemnity Insurance so just tell the TPB

§ If you are a BAS Agent but provide BAS Services through someone else’s business then you must be covered by your own policy or specifically covered by that other persons policy - You still need to tell the TPB

§ You do not need two policies (some have been worried that they need a policy for themselves and another policy for their company because both are registered - this is not the case). If the one business policy covers both then one policy is fine

“Covered by a Professional Indemnity Insurance Policy” means that; if it is just you then the policy would be in your name, if it is for a business then it may be in the business name but must include coverage of at least all registered agents providing services.

The HR Intermediary Program

An HR Intermediary is a facilitator who can obtain human resources and/or employment law expertise provided by a separate HR specialist. An HR Intermediary acts on behalf of the business owner, working with the HR expert to understand the requirements of the business and put in place the required processes and documents to comply with the Fair Work Act 2009.

HR Intermediaries ensure the business complies with the Fair Work Act, modern award or agreement and other employer obligations with the help of a HR Expert.

Preparing for Your Role as an HR Intermediary

ICB provides assessments to expand and test your knowledge in payroll and preparing to act as an HR Intermediary. These assessments are based on resources from the ICB website.

Each assessment has an 80% pass mark. The Payroll Assessment and the Annual Skill Review must be successfully completed before you are eligible to sit the HR Intermediary Assessment. You will be able to re-sit the assessments.

ICBenefits provides members with commercial advantage on everyday items!

We see this as helping you with daily living costs, just for being a member with us. While ICB provides members with bookkeeping resources, bookkeeping support and bookkeeping credibility, we want to reward you, as you, for choosing us. The ICBenefits program may benefit your lifestyle as well as your business, so we couldn’t resist!

What is it?

Discounts

The ability to purchase vouchers for less than the face value. E.g. Purchase a $100.00 Coles voucher for $95.00, or buy a product online and receive cash back into your bank account.

The ICBenefits Program is a member only benefit program using a reward gateway to provide you with discounts on over 350 retailers nationwide. Shop online via ICBenefits and save 5-25% on any purchase made. Retailers include Coles, Woolworths, iTunes, StrawberryNet, Dan Murphy’s, Expedia, Budget and much more!

How?

Cashback

Making a purchase online through ICBenefits means that you see money coming back to your bank account. Make a purchase online and receive a percentage back of the total purchase made. E.g. Need to hire a car? Make the booking online via the ICBenefits website and receive 10% cashback. The cashback can either be sent directly to your bank account OR be kept in your online account. Keeping it in your online account means that you can use it for purchases at a later date.

Voucher Shop

Gift cards are a great idea for not only gifts but also using everyday. In the voucher shop, you have the opportunity to buy vouchers or gift cards to a number of different stores at a discounted rate. E.g. Need an idea for school holidays? Buy an AMF/King Bowling voucher for $100.00 but pay only $90.00! Once you purchase the voucher dispatch is made the same day. You can expect the voucher in the mail within the next 2-4 working days.
