ATLANTA CLASS OF 1962 50TH YEAR REUNION

4A

Sometimes we lose track of the time of day. Sometimes we lose track of the day of the week. Sometimes we lose track of the week of the month. Sometimes we lose track of the month of the year, but when we lose track of the year.......well, we are just completely lost!

Had every intention of being 48 this year, but on a good note, as it turns out, I’m only gonna be 47. Woohoo, lucky me! Another year come and gone and I don’t even know where it went. For Heaven’s sake....Goodness Me....and all those other silly thoughts that you say to try and revive yourself from looking dumb.

Let’s see....since my last birthday I have became a grandparent, wrecked a four-wheeler, broken some ribs, lost weight, gained weight, lost weight, gained weight, now I’m lost where I’m at on that, lol, had several great holidays with friends and family, played some poker, had alot of laughs, worked with some of the two greatest people in my offi ce and friends at the other offi ce, met some wonderful people at both my jobs and other places, enjoyed the Kirksville fair, except for the heat, helped my Unc celebrate his 80th birthday, met a wonderful man that I adore and plan to spend alot of time with, Lucky me again, have watched my daughter fall in love with a great person, who is soon to be the father

of my second grandchild, due in November, have done alot of worrying about my father and his health, but that is looking up, thank goodness, watched my other daughter discover that motherhood is one of the greatest accomplishments that she’ll ever make and I have grown as a person, not only because of all my great happenings and the great things that the Lord hath given me, but I have also grown with this paper and you! All of those reasons are part of why I get up every morning and the other part of why I get up is to type my fi ngers off, talk my head off, listen my ears off, and smile my dimples off, because all that is to make you smile, laugh, learn, remember and share the news with me. I must say, it has been a great year and I’m sure there are plenty more great smiles and memories to come before my birthday year is up and then..... I’ll start over. And, I will start over with a smile.

Keep It Kool,Bec

Atlanta High School Class of 1962 held their 50th reunion June 16 at the Macon Comfort Inn. The day started with a luncheon at noon. The group toured the Macon Co. Historical Society Museum before returning to a time of visiting and remembering. Entertainment later in the afternoon was presented by Linda Mansfi eld and Charlie Allen of La Plata. A catered meal was served in the evening. Sunday, everyone met at Long Branch Lake for a cook-out. Attending were, front row (l to r): Ruth Ann (Brockman) Borchert of Rockaway Beach, Linda (Sears) McHenry of La Plata, Susan (Brown) Fountain of Tonopah, Nev., Marilyn (Runnels) Lawson of Lebanon. Second row: Eugene Miller and Carol (Watkins) Miller of Atlanta, Marilyn (Baker) Ford of Moberly, Ruth (Johnson) Sulivan of Macon, Clara (Downey) Riley of Cameron, Judy (Gilliland) Vittetae of Tucson, Ariz. Back row: Roger Yarns of Macon, Ralph Livingston of Bevier, Hubert Shuler of Smithville, Gary Nuhn of Novinger, robert Bearce of Kansas City, Robert Epperson of Baton Rouge, La., Dave Swadley of Macon, Marion Vittetae of Tuscon, Ariz. and David Christy of La Plata.

WOW! There are sure a lot of choices when you go to design or upgrade your heating and air conditioning system! In the early stages of our current technology, there weren’t a lot of alternatives: Cars, for example, came in just a couple colors: you could have black tinged with whitish-grey if you lived near a coastline, black-tinged with light brown if you lived in the Midwest, or black-tinged with red if you lived in the dustbowl area of Oklahoma. You could even have black that was sometimes glossy if it rained a lot where you lived! Similarly, lights, fans, and even toasters were either “on” or “off”. Same thing with residential and commercial HVAC systems. You can have grey-tinged with whitish-grey….you get the idea.

Just like the toaster and lights, air conditioners were either off or on. That means it was a “single stage” unit. You set the thermostat to where the wife wants it, and the air conditioner kicks on when she gets up and moves it to the left another ¼”, right?

Once the air conditioner kicks on, it runs at its full speed, then kicks off when the house reaches the desired temperature and the thermostat is “satisfi ed”. In the middle of the afternoon, when the temperature outside is either climbing or holding steady, the house begins heating up again as soon as the AC kicks off, then the entire process begins again. In this arrangement the comfort level has peaks and valleys; it gets

cool, warms up, then gets cool…over and over again. It’s like running your car at either full throttle or none at all. As a result, single stage units consume more power overall because there is no variance in the performance of the unit.

“But I Don’t WANT My Toast So Brown!!!”

Nowadays even your toaster has settings! Your toaster uses less electricity when it doesn’t have to heat as long, and it’s the same with your “two stage” air conditioner. It uses less electricity if it can kick on before the temperature hits the highest peak because it doesn’t have to remove as much heat. A two stage unit has two operating levels, usually 67 and 100%. In the heat of the afternoon, the unit may require that it operates at 100% of its capacity. The fi rst stage will come on at 67% and say “Hey! Need a little help here!”, calling for the second stage to kick in. In the evening hours, when the temperatures begin to fall naturally, it doesn’t take as much work for the air conditioner to remove the heat from the home, so only your fi rst stage is running. Same as your car kicks into overdrive when you’re in the passing lane, then downshifts into the more economical operating levels.

Choices are good. Staying cool is good. Saving money is great. A dual stage air conditioner can reduce your utility bill pretty signifi cantly, and is one way to keep your dollars in your pocket!

“Fill’er up!” That’s a phrase we don’t say anymore. Many of you remember that phrase from the days of the full service gas stations where the attendant would come out to your vehicle and pump the gasoline into your car for you. The attendant would ask how much gas you wanted and many times the driver would say: “Fill ‘er up!” That was a long time ago. Some people say “Fill ‘er up!” or something similar today when talking with the Lord in prayer. Do we ask God to fi ll us with joy? Do we e ask God to fi ll us with power? Do we ask God to fi ll us with love? Do we really get that excited about anything anymore other than sports? Have we closed out room for the Spirit of God to move in our people? I think all the things going on in the church and in the world today may have distracted us from paying attention to what Jesus is doing. We just stopped noticing them or we have closed down that part of ourselves that can get excited about things like that. We may have

adopted the attitude that to show that kind of emotion about religion is not right. As we think of all the things that are causing the church today to shrink, then maybe it is that loss of spiritedness in the church today. Jesus is still doing miracles today. We need to open our eyes and our hearts to that reality . We need to celebrate the miracles we witness and hear about, just like the people in the stories from the Bible who witnessed the miracles Jesus did.File’er up Lord! Fill ‘er up!

THOMAS

By Blake Hurst

I just returned from a short trip to the Farm Progress Show with my dad. Held every other year in central Iowa, the show has hundreds of acres of the newest and best farm equipment, crop hybrids and gizmos. Crowded with farmers window shopping, it is one more example of how much ingenuity has gone into American agriculture in the last century.

As a high school senior, I skipped school nearly 40 years ago to travel to the same show with my parents. My gosh, I had plans. I came home with 40 pounds of promotional material and signed up for dozens of free things. It will not surprise most of you to fi nd that none of those shiny machines ever graced Hurst Farms.

Nope, we kept struggling along with machinery that had long since lost its shine, and my plans for the latest in grain handling equipment went by the wayside. I had to be satisfi ed with a six-inch auger with an old Minneapolis Moline tractor hooked to the drive shaft. Instead of a thousand-bushel pit with a drive chain that would move thousands of bushels of grain an hour, we dug a hole in the driveway and propped up our plastic hopper with a couple of hay bales.

Anyway, Dad and I spent this day looking at the latest in technology: precision farming,

1,300-bushel grain carts and combines with more computing power than Neil Armstrong had on the Apollo 11 moon landing. If I understand it right, I can now keep all my farm records on my smart phone, run the planter with an app and predict grain markets far into the future with a couple of keystrokes. How do people have enough time to learn how to apply this technology, when we spend all of our time trying to fi x the ten-year-old technology we already have?

My nephews were there as well, creating their own rather extensive wish list for our farm. I listened to their dreams, smiled in all the right places and will let their father break the news to them about what we can afford rather than what we’d like to have.

At the end of the worst year for raising crops in a half of a century, we’re all looking forward to next year because we know it will be better. It’s an exciting time to be a farmer, and even if we can’t always afford the newest things, they’ll arrive on our farm soon enough. If I could look back at those brochures full of shiny new machines I lusted after 40 years ago, I’m sure that many of them are in use on our farm today. Someday we’ll have some of those shiny new-fangled gadgets I saw this fall in use on our farm.

I hope my nephews and sons-in-law will teach me how to use them.
