Rules for Categories• A well-constructed tree gives each thing a place. If too many items don’t have places and thus have to be shoved into the “miscellaneous” category, then the tree isn’t doing its job.
• Each thing gets only one place. Listing the cheese plate under appetizers, entrées, and desserts just confuses people.
• No one category should be too big or too small. If your clothing catalog has a separate section for every shoe in every size, its organization will be too “bushy” to be of much use.
• It should be obvious what the defining principle of each category is. A list of real estate offerings that has a category called “Places” isn’t very helpful.
