    Mobile cellular network

First Generation: provided wireless communications without mobility, a luxury service

Second Generation: cellular networking invented by Bell Labs in 1972 made wirelesscommunication accessible to main stream public (at early 1990s)

Third Generation: introduced data services (around 2000)

Fourth Generation: enhanced data capacity & higher mobility support

Driving factors of todays mobile networking

User's behavior: moving from voice to

    multimedia applications, requiring

    ubiquitous coverage

    Operator business model: unlimited data

    offers to save declining ARPU

Handsets & applications: iPhone, iTunes,Mobile TV, Social networks, etc., are

    throughput-greedy

Technical issues: what else to increase

    the network capacity?

    Regulation: installation of new high

power macro BS will be more difficult

Mobile communication networking is leaded in a future of small cells

    High network complexity

high density & randomness of cell sites

    Spectrum sharing

Macro cell small cell spectrum sharing will be

    Summary

    Small cell networking is promising

    Network architecture, NOT cellular technology

Simple logic: reduce cell size to increase the

    network capacity

Small antenna & site allow for coverage hole

    avoidance & energy efficiency

    Enabler: efficient backhauling (e.g., GPON),

advanced network management (e.g., SON,new PHY technologies)

    Different concepts for different usages

    Femtocell: private home network, small

transmission power & range (~ some meters)

Pico cell: public indoor & outdoor for hotspots,

higher trans. power & range than Femtocell

None of the solutions available today

    address small cells requirements

Seamless handover is a big technical concern

Cross layer small cell macro cell operation

Real SON solutions for network deployment &

    management at low cost

    Market

    Some operators believe commercial

    deployments not feasible until 2011

Low cost is critical - one of the inhibitors of

    femtocells and picocells market traction.

Big thread from WiFi free access

Too early to benchmark small cell networks

    solutions
