Possum Kingdom Reservoir, popularly

known as Possum Kingdom (PK) Lake, is

located on the Brazos River in Palo Pinto,

Stephens, and Young counties. It has a

capacity of 724,700 acre-feet, a surface area

of 19,800 acres and a shoreline of 310 miles.

Here, Morris Sheppard Dam impounds

1.5 million acre-feet of water annually for

municipal, industrial, mining, irrigation,

flood-control, recreational and power-

generation uses. Area hills and valleys, post

oaks and cedars make a veritable paradise

for possums around the lake.

What it has become, beyond a possum

paradise, is one of the premier recreational

locations in the state, offering unlimited

water sports opportunities, fishing and

camping set amid the hills of one of the

more pristine areas in the United States.

For water enthusiasts, there are marinasoffering boat rentals of all types, boatlaunches, both public and private, scubadiving opportunities, water skiing, fishing,swimming, or just plain relaxing by the water.

Both the east and west sides of PK haverestaurants, gift shops, boat repair shops anddealers, convenience stores and bait shops. Onthe west side, Possum Kingdom State Park isavailable.

Cabin rentals and camping is abundant atPK, with eight public use camping areas onthe water.

The clear waters of Possum Kingdom Lakeprovide great opportunity for inland divingwithout the expense of traveling to Mexico orthe Islands. Many divers only think about theexotic locations and overlook the great diveopportunities at inland lakes. Once lakeoriented, divers can explore the rockformations around the Hell’s Gate area andalong the cliff line in several places on thesouth side of the lake. The underwatervisibility varies from good to excellentdepending on the weather and one can findseveral boats with the dive flag displayedeach warm weekend as divers explore thisbeautiful lake.

Texas Parks and Wildlife has seen to thedesires of fishermen, stocking the lakeannually with striper, native bass and large-mouth Florida bass.

Several boat rental businesses are locatedaround the lake that offer everything frompersonal watercrafts to ski boats to partyboats at reasonable prices. Docks abound, asdo services both on and off the water.

The estimated annual visitors to PK numberover three million and facilities toaccommodate these visitors have growndramatically over the last several years. ✯

Hell’s Gate



The Possum Kingdom Lake area isprotected by two separate Volunteer FireDepartments with Emergency MedicalServices. Possum Kingdom Eastside EMS wasformed in 1973 by a handful of volunteers andone donated used ambulance to cover the vastarea of Possum Kingdom Lake. In 1983, PKWestside EMS was formed after two used vanambulances were purchased from Lubbock.Both service’s have grown over the years andreplaced the used trucks with new, fullystocked ambulances and highly trainedcertified experienced responders with MobileIntensive Care abilities. Each Service worksclosely with local Air Ambulances, ie., Airevacor Careflight that may be contacted totransport a patient to a specialty hospital in themetroplex if needed.

Both PK Westside and PK Eastside EMS areall volunteer emergency medical services.These volunteers/responders spend numeroushours training and both have EMT classesseveral times a year. They are available torespond to any emergency at any hour, and allservices offered are given to the communityand visitors of Possum Kingdom Lake totally“free” of charge. Both services depend ondonations to maintain operation. PK EastsideEMS/VFD has two fund raisers every year witha Fish Fry in July and an annual “Boot Drive”on Memorial Day Weekend. Both FireDepartments are staffed totally by Volunteersand have several trucks to respond to anyemergency from grass fires to structure fires.PK Westside VFD also has a new Hovercraftthat is designed to aid in rescues. ✯

Air Evac Lifeteam has been providing airambulance care to rural communities since1985. Professionally trained crews of nurses,medics and pilots operate medically equippedhelicopters that rapidly transport patients tothe nearest appropriate medical facility. Air Evac Lifeteam medical specialists arestanding by 24 hours a day, 365 days a year torespond to your medical emergency.

A call to 911 is the first step to address youremergency. By alerting the 911 Operator andthe ground emergency response team thatyou are an Air Evac member, a skilled AirEvac crew will fly directly to your location ifyou have a life or limb threatening medicalemergency. You or your loved ones will bestabilized and transported.

Members who use the Air Evac Lifeteamservice for critical emergencies will notreceive a bill for the flight – no matter howmany times a year they use it. If you are not amember, you could pay up to $12,000.00 forthe flight.

B Y K EV I N D . VA NDU S E ROne story about why the lake is called PossumKingdom began when a peddler named IkeSablosky came to Texas in 1906. This sales-man had come to Texas from Pennsylvaniaand Indiana to regain his health. MineralWells at the time was famous as a health spaand Ike came to recuperate. While living in

Mineral Wells, Ike saw an opportunity to getinto the hide and fur business as the PaloPinto hills were a paradise for raccoon,possum, and fur bearing critters. Mr.Sablosky’s best source of supply for possumhides came from cedar choppers and huntersup in Northwest Palo Pinto County. Ike calledhis best suppliers “the boys from Possum

Kingdom”. The name grew more and morepopular and the area became known asPossum Kingdom. Mr. Sablosky moved toDallas and became a millionaire in theinsurance business. He once owned the Dallasbaseball team of the old Texas League. Afterhe died at age 82, most of his wealth wasgiven to charities. ✯

Beginning January 1, 2006 the Brazos River Authority implemented a WaterRecreational Permit for all watercraft on Possum Kingdom Lake. The permitapplies to all watercraft requiring state registration.

Annual fee: $35 for those over 65 or active duty/retired military with proper ID

Permits will be sold at local vendors, Chamber of Commerce and the BrazosRiver Authority Lake Office. Daily permits are also available in 24-hourdispensers at the Public Boat Ramp, West Side Park and South D&D Public Use Area.

The permit must be on the watercraft at all times and presented to LawEnforcement Officer upon request. A fine of up to $500 for failure to complywill be enforced.

Choose from a wide variety of private andpublic campgrounds with the amenities youwant for an enjoyable weekend or extendedvacation. Public camping areas are managed bythe Brazos River Authority (BRA). The BRAdoes not take reservations for public tentcamping sites. Sites are available on a firstcome, first served basis. There is not electric orwater hook-ups at BRA campsites.

Bring your own charcoal or camp fuel. Cuttingtrees is not allowed. Firewood bundles areavailable at local convenience stores. Camperswho wish to use areas for more than one weekshall obtain permission from the BRA.

Keep your pets on a leash at all times - for yourpet’s safety and the safety of all visitors.

Capital ImprovementThe BRA has begun work on two capitalimprovement projects at Sandy Beach andScenic Cove parks. A new, handicappedaccessible restroom and shower facility willreplace the older facility at Sandy Beach. TheAmerican Disability Association-approvedrestrooms and showers will be completed bythe end of January, weather permitting. Thepark will remain closed until construction iscomplete.

An additional capital improvement project isunderway at Scenic Cove Park. More than 20shelters with fire pits, tables and barbecuegrills are being installed along with twoadditional restrooms, upgraded courtesy dock,and additional road infrastructure. The park isexpected to remain open throughout theimprovement process.

Public Use Facilities at Possum Kingdom Lake



Possum Kingdom

Lake (PK) offers one of

the most beautiful and

dramatic vistas in the

state. Enjoying nature at

its best can be found on

the hiking trails at

Possum Kingdom.

Presently there are three existing and one future trail at PK, each offering

spectacular views of native vegetation and the lake; a one-quarter mile

nature trail at Westside Park, a one-mile hiking trail along the Brazos

River (below the damn) and the five-mile hike and bike trail located off

Park Road 36 at La Villa Road. This trail offers a restroom and public

parking. The trail also provides access to the top of a 90’ high peak that

has an outstanding view of the lake. Phase II, opening Spring 2009, will

add six miles to the exisiting five mile trail. The scenic qualities of the

trails rival any in the state. Outstanding nature viewing includes deer,

turkey, fox and numerous birds. These hike and bike trails are free to the

POSSUM KINGDOMHIKE & BIKE

TRAIL ADVISORY

The Possum Kingdom Trail is anature trail through a North Texascedar and oak forest. The trailhas a natural surface with avertical rise of more than 200 feetand requires physical stamina tocomplete.

Persons with heart, respiratoryor other medical conditions thatmay hinder physical exertion andwomen who are pregnant, arecautioned to consult theirphysician before attempting totravel this trail. Young childrenmay experience difficultytraveling the trail due to steepinclines and uneven surfaces.

The PK trail winds through thenatural habitat of numerous

plants and animals native toNorth Texas. Feel free tophotograph as you desire, butplease do not approach orthreaten the wildlife.

Remember to dressappropriately for the currentweather conditions. This trail canreach temperatures of more than100° during the summer. Makesure you bring plenty of waterwith you!

Please be advised that due tothe composition of the trailsurface, the trail may beimpassable during andimmediately after heavy rain dueto mud and runoff.

Cell phone service is unreliablein this area.

For your safety, please do notventure off the trail. It is highlyrecommended that visitors do nothike or bike alone.



TRAIL RULES

The Brazos River Authority asksthat you help keep the trail abeautiful and safe area foreveryone. Please remember thefollowing rules when using the PKHike and Bike Trail:

Pack it in; pack it out – trashreceptacles are provided at thetrailhead and ARE NOT availableon the trail. Please take care todispose of trash in the propercontainers.

Ride safely – we recommendhelmets.

Do not approach or feed theanimals – the animals you see onthe trail are not domesticated. Asin any outdoor situation, they maybite or attack and could carrydisease. Please be careful!

Plan for your trail trip – thereare no water fountains on the trail.

Please be prepared with water andgeneral hiking necessities beforesetting out.

Keep your pets on a leash at alltimes – for your pets’ safety andthe safety of our hikers andmountain bikers, we ask that youkeep your pets on a leash.

Stay on the trail – our trail iscut through natural and primitiveareas. Please avoid possible injuryby staying on the specified trail.

Motorized vehicles are notallowed on the trail.

Alcoholic beverages are notpermitted.

RECREATIONAREASRECEIVEUPGRADESAT PK

Trekkers headed to PossumKingdom Lake’s Hike and BikeTrail will have twice as much trailto explore this coming spring.Construction on Phase II of thetrail system began in October andwill add approximately six-milesto the existing five-mile trail.

Phase II of the four phase trailsystem will connect with theexisting trail at Park Road 36 andstretch to Burma Road. Severalparks will be linked by the systemalong with trail heads at ParkRoad 36, Frontier Unit, HamiltonDrive and Burma Roads, as well asSouth D&D Public Use Area.

Visitors to the trail will haveaccess to vehicle parking areasand trail signage directing them to

overlooks withinterpretive signageand some of the mostimpressive views of

the lake. The addition windsthrough wooded areas, limestonecanyons and the trails peak morethan 350 feet above the lake. Thetrail system was designed to allowthe habitat to remain untouchedoutside of the marked trail, sovisitors will enjoy wilderness as itis native to the PK area. Anofficial opening of Phase II is setfor late spring.

Phase III of the trail project hasreceived approval from the TexasParks and Wildlife Departmentalong with grant funding in theamount of $121,600. Work isexpected to begin in fall, 2009 onthe $152,000 project. Oncecompleted, the trail system willoffer 21 miles of breathtakingviews. ✯

Located along the shores of one of themost famed—or at least one of the mostuniquely named—lakes in all of Texas,Possum Kingdom State Park showcasesthe cedar-covered hilltop vistas andexpansive deep blue water that is thesetting of Possum Kingdom reservoir.

The park itself encompasses some 1,500acres in the distinctive surroundings ofwhat is actually a mountain range, thePalo Pinto Mountains, and the BrazosRiver Valley. The state park featuresnumerous amenities that make a visit tothe lake even more rewarding, as well ascomfortable. PK State Park has more than100 available campsites, including 10walk-in primitive tent sites, 61 water andelectric hookup sites, and 55 water campsites. There are also seven cabin facilitieswhich are available for rent, six of whichaccommodate four people, and one largecabin called Longhorn Lodge, that canhold eight people. The cabins all have airconditioning and heating, a kitchen withstove, oven and refrigerator; a bathroomwith shower, and a barbeque grill andtable located just outside.

There’s also plenty to do and see while atPossum Kingdom SP; two miles ofwinding hike and bike trails make for agreat walk with traditionally lots of visiblewildlife, such as favorites like whitetaildeer, wild turkey and raccoons, and ofcourse, possums. A fishing pier, picnictables, restrooms with showers,playgrounds and a fish-cleaning stationare also located inside PK State Park. Aconcrete boat ramp and courtesy dockgrant access to the 17,600-acre lake and itslegendary recreational boating and fishingopportunities for largemouth bass,crappie, striped bass, white bass, channelcatfish and others.

There’s even a privately operated, friendlystaffed store and marina inside the park,whichoffergroceries,bait,tackle,campingandboatingsupplies

and an extensive line of genuine PKsouvenirs. You can even rent most any sortof boat from the PK Store—from canoesand kayaks to pontoon or ski boats(reservations on boats are highlyencouraged).

St Peter’s Episcopal Church

The church building was originally built in 1907 in Graham on the side of “Standpipe Mountain”. In 1963, when the parishioners of the Gra-ham Church, Holy Spirit Episcopal, built a new church the original building was moved to Possum Kingdom Lake and named Saint Peter’s By The Lake. The church was presented a Texas State Historical Me-dallion in recognition of being one of the oldest church buildings in Texas. (The Episcopal Church was first organized in Graham in 1876.)

Today the church has a very active congregation and sponsors com-munity activities such as a Spring Luncheon; the Possum Walk; a Women’s Retreat; a Fall Picnic; a team in the Possum Fest Chili Cook Off; a Thanksgiving Service and Dinner; and a Christmas Eve Service.

The church is also available for weddings. Any money received from these events is placed in a building fund to help maintain this historic building.
