CRASH has a simple philosophy. The acci-dent management company, established inNewry in 1996, employs 45 people who allwork towards a single goal : HelpingNorthern Ireland motorists through thetraumatic aftermath of a road accident.Tony McKeown, Sales & Marketing Director

at Crash, who is originally from Lurgan said:“One in ten motorists are involved in acci-dents every year – yet when it comes todealing with the scene of the accident andmanaging the claims process many driversare unaware of how to handle the situation.”Tony continued: “Our message is simple, weare not an insurance company – we work onbehalf of local motorists involved in roadaccidents and manage the claim on theirbehalf. We are on their side. This ethos is thesecret to our business.”Crash offers a host of useful services such as

supplying replacement vehicles, arrangingrepairs, liaising with the insurance compa-

nies involved and ensuring customers gettheir full entitlement - whatever the circum-stances.They also offer a unique mobile accident

investigation service if this is any disputeregarding the liability of an accident.Experienced investigators are dispatched tothe scene of the accident and use theirexpertise to dispel any confusion around lia-bility.Tony concluded: “In Northern Ireland alone

Crash has helped over 20,000 motoristsrecoup over £60 million in losses. We cur-rently deal with over 150 accidents everyweek. Our customers tell us they are delight-ed to have someone on their side – wesupport them through the process and makesure each and every one gets what they areentitled too. The claims process can be anunpleasant experience. We take the hassleaway – letting our customers get on withtheir lives.”

French sense withthe Renault MeganeR E N AU LT ’ S t h i r d g e n e r a t i o nMegane family hatchback aims totake on premium rivals on their ownterms.Smarter, sharper and offering far

better quality, Renault’s third gener-ation Megane family hatchback isthe car its predecessor should havebeen. It’s now one of the sector’sclass-leaders, good enough to makeother brands look to their laurels. There wasn’t much wrong with

R e n a u l t ’s s e c o n d g e n e r a t i o nMegane. It was European Car of theYear in 2003 and still amongstWestern Europe’s top five best sellersin 2007, its last full year of produc-tion. Still, it was never what you’dcall a ‘premium’ product. You would-n’t buy one if you’d been used torunning a Volkswagen Golf for exam-ple. Nor did it look like the kind ofcar you could park at the golf club, comfortably elegant amongst thegas guzzlers, its owner wearing thesmug smile of the sanctimoniousdownsizer doing his or her bit for theenvironment. The third generation car looks a dif-

ferent prospect. There’s no longer anairfix kit look to the styling or to thecabin, wafer-thin panel gaps, classymaterials and solid nuggety cute-n e s s m a k i n g t h i s a c a r t h a tVolkswagen’s disappointingly con-servative MK6 Golf should reallyfear. Peugeot’s 308, Ford’s Focus,Fiat’s Bravo, Toyota’s Auris andVauxhall’s Astra are all also clearlywithin its sights.The MK2 Megane may have had its

faults but lack of driving appeal was-n’t one of them. Renault’s challengewas to retain this whilst building in ahigher quality ‘big car’ feel. Has itsucceeded? The signs look encour-a g i n g . T h e r e ’s a n e w f r o n tsuspension/subframe arrangementto improve directional precision anda redeveloped power steering systemto more swiftly respond to driverinput. The rear suspension mean-while, has been tuned to produce amore responsive, agile ride, as wellas offer improved cornering withoutdetracting from comfort. Plus, thereare bigger brakes, able to pull you upto rest from 62mph in a class-lead-ing 37 metres.Even more crucial is the way that

the design has retained its top afetycredentials. If, for some reason, atyre pressure monitoring system,plus auto headlamps and wipersdon’t keep you out of the bushes,t h e n s t a n d a r d A B S , E B D a n dEmergency Brake Assist should do,while plusher models also get ESP

stability control and CSV understeercontrol. On the passive safety front, Renault

say that their SRP3 set-up (Systemfor Restraint and Protection) guar-antees a uniquely high level ofprotection, taking into account bothimpact force and the build of occu-pants. There’s the usual bouncycastle collection of airbags but realsafety is about more than just gluinginflatable bags around the interior. So it is that the seatbelts have dou-ble pre-tensioners, load limiters andare designed to prevent you fromsliding underneath them. The head-rests are designed to cushion youbetter in rear impacts, while doubleimpact sensors in the doors enablethe side airbags to offer three timesmore cushioning to your body dur-ing a side impact. The MK3 Megane has a sporty,

dynamic stance, thanks particularlyto its short front and rear overhangs,a long 2.64m wheelbase, a steeply-raked roofline and a wide track. Itcertainly exudes a feeling of muchhigher quality than its predecessor, with thin cut lines between the dif-ferent body panels. Great care (atlast) has also gone into the qualityand fit and finish of the materialsused and there are nice touches likethe soft-touch finish on the dash-board cowling that’s resistant todaily use and the ageing effects ofsunlight. Or the way that the wind-screen wipers are aestheticallyconcealed beneath the bonnet line.Climb in and the first thing you

notice at the wheel is the innovativedashboard which features an ana-logue rev-counter alongside a digitalspeedometer which also incorpo-rates the cruise control/speedlimiter display. When this function isactivated, the speed selected by thedriver is displayed at the top of thespeedometer which is itself ringedby a sequence of lights that take theform of an arc around the centraldisplay. In speed limiter mode, thered segment lights up as the speedincreases, while the selected speedbegins to flash if exceeded. Space inthe cabin is unexceptional but theboot volume of 372 litres (assuminga spare wheel) figures amongst thebest in the segment. To begin with, only the five-door

hatchback bodystyle is on offer butwe can soon expect to see the fullc o m p l e m e n t o f M e g a n ebodyshapes, including a three-door,an estate, a coupe-cabriolet and anew version of the Scenic mini-MPVbased on this car. There are three

trim levels: Expression, Dynamiqueand Privilege. The engine line-up is a mixture of

f a m i l i a r c a r r y- ov e r s a n d n e warrivals, with biofuel-compatibleengines also on the agenda. Mostimportant will be the dCi diesels, sales of which will be focused on thedCi 86 and the particulate filter-equipped dCi 106 units. Both ofthese engines emit 120g or less ofCO2/km, while even the powerfuldCi 130 (with pulling power nowmore readily available earlier in therev range) manages 135g/km. Ifthat’s not enough, your dealer cantell you about a dCi 160 unit (whichyou’ll need to order in dCi 150 formif you want automatic transmission).Petrol buyers also get the latest

Laguna units, in this case the 1.6 16V100 and 110bhp powerplants, plusyou can talk to your dealer about anall-new turbocharged TCe 130 unit. This new, fuel-efficient 1,397cc blockpacks the power of a 1.8-litre engine(130bhp) and the torque of a 2.0(190Nm), yet its CO2 emissions areless than those of a 1.6, making itparticularly respectful of the envi-ronment. The flagship engine, theTCe 180, uses similar technology.Despite being bigger and roomier,

this Mégane is an average 8kg lighterthan its predecessor. The combina-tion of lower weight and optimisedaerodynamics has led to significant-ly lower fuel consumption and CO2emissions across the board. Almost70% of all Meganes sold will featureCO2 emissions of less than 140g/kmor be biofuel-compatible. This caralso claims to be one of the mostsocially responsible in its class, being 95 per cent end-of-life recov-erable by weight, while almost 12per cent of the plastics it containsare sourced from recycling, equiva-lent to an average of 22kg per car.

Renault had to step up its game withthe third generation Megane and ithas. Bigger and roomier, this carought to suit down-sizers, feelingmuch like a larger model to drive. There are plenty of green credentialsand the apparently exemplary buildquality that we first saw in the largerLaguna. Overall, unless you have aparticular aversion to the Renaultbadge, it’s hard to see any significantfailings. The result is a car that hasgone from being a family hatchbackalso-ran to being one of the two orthree models in the segment thatbuyers really must consider.

THE concept of a stylish Kia car is one thatthe British public are starting to get comfort-able with. Andy Enright runs the rule overthe handsome pro_cee’d.Designed to draw new customers to the Kia

brand, it’s hard to see the pro_cee’d failing. It’s well built, aggressively priced, handsomeand comes with probably the industry’s bestwarranty arrangement (7yr/100,000 mile).Yes, there will be some who still baulk at thebadge but for those with a modicum of selfassurance, the pro_cee’d makes a smartchoice. The third model from the cee’d platform

after the cee’d five-door hatch and the cee’dSW estate, the three-door pro_cee’d aims at atougher market sector; those who want afamily hatch that’s stylish as well as practi-cal.With rivals like the Vauxhall Astra Sport

Hatch and the Citroën C4 coupe to contendwith, it’ll need to bring its A-game.With the five-door cee’d already doing good

business, transplanting the engines into thepro_cee’d has been fairly painless and assuch, the three-door car comes to marketwith a big choice of powerplants.Choose petrol and there’s a 104bhp 1.4-litre

or a 124bhp 1.6-litre.This bigger engine does need a bit of right

boot to access all of its available perform-ance though, with peak power arriving at arather raucous 6,200rpm and peak torque of154Nm not making itself felt until the tachoneedle hits 4,200rpm.Alternatively, there are gutsier diesel

engines available, with a 1.6-litre CRDi avail-able in either 89 or 113bhp guises and the138bhp 2.0-litre CRDi version marking thetop of the range.

Buyers get a choice of manual or automaticgearboxes. The mechanicals are shared with the cee’d

which means steering that lacks a little ofthe polish of some of the very best con-tenders, although we’re talking about tinypercentage differences. There’s certainly very little in it when it

comes to ride quality, the Kia adoptingmuch the same MacPherson strut front sus-pension as the best of its rivals and a cleverindependent set-up at the rear that is , ineffect, a torsion beam that’s articulated inthe middle. The pro_cee’d corners well with well-sup-

pressed lateral roll and even when provoked, steadfastly refuses to do anything unexpect-ed.The long wheelbase helps ride quality with

only lumpy B-roads showing up any flaws indeportment.

Style and efficiency with Vauxhall’s InsigniaTHE UK’s mid-size sector has traditionallybeen the preserve of conservative and pre-dictable designs. But now Vauxhall islaunching the Insignia, which is set to breakfrom convention by offering buyers in thisclass a compelling mix of breathtakingdesign and leading technology.“In the same way that the Astra and Corsa

have freshened up their respective sectors, the new Vauxhall Insignia has been designedto breathe fresh air into what is normally avery staid area of the market,” says AndyGilson, Vauxhall’s Marketing Director. “Ourcustomers will be able to enjoy premiumstyling, advanced technology and exception-al dynamics, but at an affordable price.”The Insignia’s elegant styling combines

sculptured artistry with technical precision, illustrated by wing and blade themes whichintegrate with the car’s rakish, but gracefulsilhouette. The body’s sculpted shape ispunctuated by sweeping front and rear lightdesigns and fronted by a bold radiator grille, which displays the refreshed Griffin logo in anew, circular surround carrying Vauxhall’sname.Another benefit brought by the Insignia’s

flowing lines is a spectacularly low Cd of just0.27, bringing with it benefits in fuel con-s u m p t i o n , c a b i n r e f i n e m e n t a n dperformance. All body variants have anidentical wheelbase of 2737mm, while theSport Tourer adds around 80mm to the4830mm length of the saloon and hatchmodels.Insignia’s saloon and hatch models will hit

UK dealerships at the end of 2008 with abroad range of two diesel and three petrolengines. The Sports Tourer – due in 2009 –will bring with it two further powertrains, a1.6-litre, 180PS petrol and a new 2.0 CDTiBiTurbo with a maximum output of 190PS.An ecoFLEX version with lower C02 emis-s i o n s , b u t w i t h n o p e r f o r m a n c ecompromise, will join the line-up later nextyear.All powertrains will come with either a six-

s p e e d m a n u a l o r s i x - s p e e d a u t o

transmission.A range of new or improved features on the

Insignia enhance everything from dynamicsto comfort and safety. The FlexRide system, available on selected models, allows driversto personalise their suspension set up at thepress of a button, or if left alone will auto-matically adapt to different driving styles.Complementing FlexRide is Adaptive 4X4,which improves handling and stability in allcondit ions. Standard with both tur-bocharged petrol powertrains, the systemuses electronically controlled hydraulic discclutch plates to distribute torque from 0-100per cent between the front and rear axles. On SRi models, an electronic limited slip dif-ferential which balances rear wheel torqueleft to right is also standard.

Vauxhall’s Front Camera System will appearas an option on Insignia soon after launch. This leading technology uses a small cam-era, positioned inside the car’s windscreento read and memorise both speed warningand no-overtaking signs, the details of whichare relayed back to the driver from theinstrument panel. The system also incorpo-rates a lane departure warning, alertingdrivers if they unintentionally leave theirlane. The Insignia is also the first Vauxhall to use

the latest generation Adaptive ForwardLighting. This clever system now uses ninelighting functions which automaticallyadapt to information relating to road profile, driving status and general visibility. Modelsfitted with Intelligent AFL are also equippedwith LED daytime running lamps.Vauxhall rejuvenated the coupe segment in

1989 with the Calibra and co-founded thecompact MPV category ten years later withthe Zafira. Now, with the launch of the newInsignia, Vauxhall is bringing much-neededpanache to a market segment that is beingrevitalised as people search for vehicle withgreater fuel efficiency. The Insignia’s innovative design has the

potential not only to excite mid-size car buy-

ers again, but also to recapture customers leaving thelarge SUV segments because of high fuel costs. Mid-sizecars currently account for around 10 per cent of theEuropean market, but it is expected that this figure willincrease again.“This is the right car being introduced at the right time

as people are moving from large sports utility vehicles. The Insignia is expressive looking, uses fuel efficientlyand has five full seats and plenty of luggage capacity –all important features for families, “ says Alain Visser,GME’s Chief Marketing Officer.

Developed by General Motors Europe, with a significantcontribution coming from Vauxhall’s EngineeringCentre at Millbrook in Bedfordshire, UK, the Insigniawill be built at GME’s plant in Rüsselsheim. All Insignias come with high levels of equipment as

standard, including ESP, passenger airbag deactivation, automatic headlights, electric driver’s seat heightadjuster and electrically adjustable four way lumbarsupport. Cruise control is also standard across therange, along with front, side and curtain airbags, Isofixon all 3 rear seats, and ABS.

The Citroen C4Picasso –Better by designWE hit the outskirts ofParis and it becameclear something wasamiss. Back on hometurf, the Citroen C4Picasso’s satellite navi-gation system mighthave been expected tod i s p l a y s o m e l o c a lknowledge and pull-outan ingenious short-cutor two.Instead, it was guiding us

directly into the teeth of theperfect storm that is theFrench capital’s notoriousrush hour. Some scrolling around and zooming

in on the dash-mounted displayscreen revealed the true horror of ademented route that appeared totake in the Champs Elyse and passdirectly beneath the Eiffel tower.

Amazing

This was going to scupper ourschedule something rotten. It wastime to break out the road atlas, dis-able the computer and take evasiveaction. It’s amazing how some journeys

look perfectly manageable on a map.Journeys like the brief squirt fromthe Calais ferry terminal to the farm-house we’d rented in the Pyreneanfoothills south of Toulouse. In reality, a missed ferry (kindly

a r r a n g e d b y P & O F e r r i e s ;www.poferries.com) and the small

matter of gay Paris being inconve-niently located slap bang in our pathwere complicating matters and thetrip was beginning to seem likeevery one of its 650+ miles. The map book was studied, the

worst of the Paris traffic was avoidedand before too long the C4 Picassowas ploughing down the sparselypopulated autoroutes in the desiredsoutherly direction.Wi t h t h e s a t e l l i t e n a v i g a t i o n

switched off and in disgrace follow-i n g i t s a t t e m p t e d P a r i s i a nsightseeing tour, the car settled intoits native habitat perfectly.

Glided

In the UK the C4 Picasso can feelbouncy over our appalling road sur-f a c e s b u t i t g l i d e d o v e r t h ewell-tended French tarmac with the1.6-litre HDI diesel engine murmur-ing away in the background. Withthe roomy leather seats of ourExclusive model to sit in and ahandy armrest to prop a wearyelbow on, the Citroen was revealingitself as an outstanding motorwaycar. The 110bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine

will sit on its cruise control at85mph very happily on Frenchautoroutes, returning nearly 45mpgeven at that velocity. If you’re not afan of cruise control, and manyaren’t, there’s also a handy manualspeed limiter function that will pre-vent you inadvertently creeping overthe posted limit. With a maximum speed of 125mph,

the C4 Picasso had plenty left togive, so when driving it without thecruise or the limiter switched on, itwas easy to accidentally creep uptowards the three figure mark on

empty, featureless autoroute sec-tions.The positive opinion of the Picasso

was shared by all four occupants aslegroom in the rear of our five-seatermodel was very generous.

There’s plenty of storage space inthe car as well and our Exclusivemodel seemed to have had everyconceivable option levered into it.As well as the sat nav, there was the

optional hi-fi pack, metallic paint,big alloy wheels, leather heated seatsand front parking sensors.M o s t o f t h e s e o p t i o n s a r e

unabashed luxuries but if you’reshopping for a C4 Picasso, I’d strong-ly recommend the parking sensors. The front of the car disappears fromview beyond the steeply raked wind-screen and even the tallest driverswon’t be able to see the extremitieswhile manoeuvring in tight spots. The journey south was completed

without any more undue drama andthe C4 Picasso was presented withthe slightly different test of a weekon the mountain roads of thePyrenees. The ESG automatic gearbox works

fine when driven in a relaxed fash-ion in automatic mode but try topress on a bit up the steep inclinesand tight bends that characterise theroads in the area and it can get con-fused.To avoid the auto ‘box changing

down at inopportune moments, themanual paddle shifters can beselected and these give far morecontrol. The other aspect of the C4 that takesa little getting used to is the brakeswhich are very much all or nothing.Trying to reduce speed and stopsmoothly in the Citroen is quite an

art, especially at low speeds where the mer-est tickle of the substantial brake peddlebrings everything to an abrupt halt. The C4 Picasso was not the most engaging

car to hurry along a mountain road with itssoft ride and tendency to lean in corners butthe memory of how it had excelled on thelong straights of the journey down meantthat most indiscretions could be easily for-given.The column mounted gear selector is some-times awkward to use when manoeuvring atlow speeds and the central display isn’t ide-ally located for checking your speed butthere were plenty of other aspects of the car

that worked beautifully. We even managed to use the boot light that

doubles as a detachable torch on one partic-ularly dark night - a feature that I hadpreviously written–off as a useless gimmick. On the return leg, the Citroen C4 Picasso

took to the motorways with the same com-posure it has shown on the way down androunded off a trip that had shown the car inan extremely favourable light. As an all-round family vehicle, the Picasso is

a real winner and for long motorway jour-neys, there’s very little that’s better at thisprice.

The innovative C4family hatchbackNOT your run of the mill family hatchback, the Citroen C4 piles on the technology andincludes some unorthodox styling featuresbut it all hangs together rather well. The carnow gets the larger C5 model’s more distinc-t i v e n o s e , p l u s t h e r e’s a c o u p l e o fhigher-tech BMW-developed petrol enginesborrowed from its Peugeot 308 PSA Groupstablemate. The upgraded interior is nowcloser in quality to most some rivals andmakes up for any remaining lack with itssheer wow factor. Excellent diesel enginesand lots of equipment also help to temptbuyers.Citroen confounded most people’s expecta-

tions with their C4. To the outside observer, the French manufacturer seemed to haveturned away from roots steeped in the cre-ation of quirkily innovative cars and settledinto a cosy niche, selling models that werecompetent and extremely tightly priced butrarely dynamic or challenging. Then the C4family hatch arrived and made the kind ofimpact that you’d more readily associatewith its plastic explosive namesake. The C4felt fresh and distinctive and it still does butis that enough in a market where excellenceis the minimum standard for big sales? With over 900,000 examples sold, Citroen

have taken the opportunity to do a spot ofrefettling, installing a more distinctive frontend and the 1.6-litre VTi (Variable Valve Lift& Timing) and 1.6 THP ( Turbo HighPressure) petrol engines that weren’t avail-able when this car was first launched. Asbefore, the mainstream C4 range is splitbetween Coupe and Hatchback models.‘Coupe’ is Citroen-speak for 3-door, the fam-ily-orientated 5-door derivatives beingcalled simply ‘Hatchback’.The initial impression when driving the C4

is that its makers may have overdone it onthe innovation front. Digital read-outs shineback at you wherever you look and the cen-tre of the steering wheel is fixed in position.Remarkably, however, once you get over theinitial strangeness, everything works verywell. You only need to divert your eyes fromthe road slightly to pick up the wealth ofinformation on the main dash-top display, which now incorporates a rev counter that, ifyou really get your foot down, flashes red atthe limit, prompting you to change up. Rearvisibility is hindered somewhat by theunorthodox rear window on the Coupe butparking isn’t a problem as the bottom sec-tion of the split screen gives decent view ofobjects immediately behind the car.

The C4 rides with impressive smoothnessand composure but it doesn’t quite offer thelevel of feedback you sometimes want froma sporty hatchback. The variable assistancepower steering has an accurate feel and thecar is nicely balanced through corners. TheVTS version has stiffened suspension toenhance its sporting pedigree and offers asharper driving experience generally. If you’re familiar with the original C4, then

the changes to the facelifted version won’tcome as too much of a shock. There’s aredesigned, curvier bonnet to make it lookmore like the large C5, whilst the grille bene-fits from restyled integrated chevrons. Thefront bumper has also been revamped andthe number plate repositioned for whatCitroen hope is ‘a stronger, sportier, moredynamic look’. The rear lights of the C4Coupe are now finished in transparent crys-tal, there are fresh wheel designs and paintcolours, plus in the pursuit of ‘added ele-gance’, chrome inserts are featured on somemodels.Inside the cabin, the rev counter has been

relocated to the innovative translucent cen-tral display unit. A plush grain is nowfeatured on the dashboard and doors which, along with the smarter décor, makes for amore upmarket feel, while the integratedscented air freshener deals with unwantedodours. The interior is spacious and theCoupe provides similar amounts of rearlegroom and boot space to the Hatchback. The boot opening is narrower, however, andthe levers that fold the front seats forwardallowing access to the rear have a habit ofsticking up to catch the shins of passengersclimbing in.The engine range opens with Citroen’s older90 and 110bhp 1.4 and 1.6-litre 16-valvepetrol units. Best however, if you’re a petrolbuyer, to try and stretch either for a diesel orfor one of the two more modern engines. Many will choose the 120bhp 1.6-litre VTioption with its 120mph performance and42mpg combined fuel economy. The unashamedly high-tech approach

favoured by the C4 will alienate some peoplewhile inspiring others but it makes the carquite unlike any of its rivals. Reasonablebuild quality and a decent drive are matchedto excellent equipment levels, a smarter feel,a better range of petrol engines and some ofthe best diesels in the business. WithCitroen’s tight pricing and aggressive mar-keting promotions placed into the mix, theC4 delivers on a lot of levels.

MOTORING ‘09

Peugeot 207 range is movin’ on upTHE Peugeot 207 offers stylewith impressive quality andequipment.

To follow one phenomenal suc-cess story with another takessome doing, but to do it a thirdtime has given Peugeot a hugechallenge. Their 205 superministarted it all off in 1983 andthings got even better fifteenyears later with the 206, a carthat was to sell over five millionunits worldwide. Now the onushas fallen upon the model welook at here, the latest 207.Despite its sales success, criti-

cism has always persisted overthe rather low rent interior finishof the 206, something Peugeotwere keen to address with themore up-market 207 supermini.Of course, better quality tends tomean bigger prices and Peugeotworked hard to keep the 207 ataffordable levels.Priced from £9,295, Peugeot are

taking care that the 207 is posi-t i o n e d c l o s e l y t o k e ycompetitors like Renault’s Clioand Fiat’s Grande Punto. That’sdespite the fact that they claimtheir latest model sets new classstandards in terms of trim quali-ty and equipment levels. Thedesign of this car follows the cor-porate image seen on othermodels in the range like the 307and 407 with the large ‘smiling’grille and sharky front light clus-ters. The neat styling has shadesof 206 about it, yet the car iscompletely different, based onthe company’s ‘Platform 1’ floorpan which it shares with the1007. The striking and rathersporty look, which was designedin-house by Peugeot’s own styl-ists, should ensure a strongcustomer following.

The car is offered in both 3-doorand 5-door hatchback form or asa CC folding hardtop coupe. Ifyou need estate versatility, thereare also SW derivatives on offer.Peugeot is building the 207 atthree sites in France, Spain andSlovakia, ensuring that they’llhave sufficient capacity to meetdemand.Peugeot are offering a choice ofsix petrol and three dieselengines. The petrol modelsoffered are a 1.4-litre 8-valveunit producing 75bhp, a 1.4-litre16-valve unit producing 90bhp,a 1.4-litre VTi with 95bhp, a 1.6-litre VTi giving out 120bhp, plus150 and 175bhp 1.6-litre turbooptions. The diesel offerings areall second generation common-r a i l h i g h - p r e s s u r e d i r e c tinjection powerplants and startwith a 1.4-litre HDi producing70bhp. This is followed by a 1.6-litre HDi 16-valve delivering90bhp and a range topping ver-sion of the same engine with avariable geometry turbochargerproducing 110bhp. All theseunits are a result of the jointventure between PSA PeugeotCitroën and BMW Group, the207 being the first Peugeotmodel to use them.Sitting inside the 207, you can

immediately sense that this caris far removed from the 206 interms of its quality and elegance.Plus the 207, even in its mostbasic trim level, is head andshoulders above its equivalent206 model in refinement. Theelegant centre panel houses allthe usual heating, ventilatingand audio switches and the bin-nacle behind the steering wheelfeatures three circular dials, mir-roring those usually seen on a

motorcycle. The overall effect isvery pleasing and gives theimpression of a very up-marketproduct. The front seats are verycomfortable and appear to givegood support. In the rear, aswith most vehicles in this sector, the available space is rather lim-ited to the size of the passengerand driver seated in the front. With the front seats fully extend-ed backwards, the space in theback can be a bit restricted.Equipment levels? Well, air-con-

ditioning is available in twospecifications, dual zone manu-al or automatic. In addition, each vehicle is equipped with afragrance diffuser which is dis-creetly incorporated into thefascia panel and dispenses oneof seven selectable fragrances tokeep the interior of your 207smelling sweetly. Each fragrancehas been specially developed bya leading French perfume sup-plier. Useful features includeautomatic activation of thedipped beam, automatic frontwindscreen wipers, electric frontwindows with one-touch auto-matic reverse control and aremote control for the radio situ-ated under the steering wheel.Safety has been designed into

the 207 and has already earned af i v e s t a r r a t i n g f r o m t h eEuroNCAP tests. The 207’s fronte n d c o n t a i n s t w o i m p a c tabsorption structures borrowedfrom the 407 that distributeimpact energy more efficientlyin the event of a collision. Sillreinforcements and tubular barsin the doors aid structural rigidi-t y. N u m e r o u s a i r b a g s a r einstalled in the 207 and the fronttwo ‘adaptive’ airbags have adual-generator function that can

vary their pressures according tothe severity of the impact. Sideairbags and curtain airbags alsofeature as standard or as anoption, depending on the modellevel. All 207s are fitted with two3-point Isofix mountings in therear outer seats, each of whichcan accommodate a child’sIsofix car safety seat.Peugeot seems to have cracked

it again. The 207 looks the part,is well put together and is defi-

nitely a class above its 206 pred-e c e s s o r. I f y o u s t i l l n e e dconvincing, just shut one of thedoors. They close with a veryreassuring ‘thunk’. The same asyou would experience with aMercedes-Benz or BMW. ThePeugeot supermini success storylooks set to continue.

As a capable supermini all-r o u n d e r c o v e r i n g a l l t h eimportant bases, the Peugeot

207 looks good but with thesmaller-engined cars, you dofind yourself wishing for a bitmore power to make the most ofwhat is a highly accomplishedchassis. The sloppy gearbox,‘distinctive’ frontal styling andsome questionable interior plas-t i c s n o t w i t h s t a n d i n g , t h ePeugeot is hard to fault and itmakes a great choice for buyersseeking a safe, well-equippedand affordable supermini.

Audi A4 Avant Range - go placidlyESTATE cars aren’t meant to look asgood as Audi’s latest A4 Avant. AndyEnright searches in vain for theright-anglesThe latest Audi A4 has rapidly estab-lished itself as the go-to car in itssector if you want space and drivingenjoyment. Should you need a littlemore space, the current Avant modelcan serve that up too with 490 litresof fresh air behind the back seats

and a hefty 1,430 with the backbench folded.Every now and then, the car indus-

try seizes upon a concept and rivalmanufacturers will indulge in afeeding frenzy to saturate the mar-ket. With hindsight, some of theseconcepts aren’t at all clever. In thelate Eighties, virtually every manu-facturer rushed a four-wheel drivesaloon car, hatchback or coupe to

market. The Nineties saw a suddenspike in sales of small SUVs that fellover when pointed at a corner, whilein the early Noughties, premiummanufacturers fell over themselvesto launch estate versions of theircompact executive models thatactually held less luggage than thesaloon cars they were based on.Every one of them an evolutionarydead end. The latest Audi A4 Avant

demonstrates that in the battle betweenfashion and functionality, there’s only everone long term victor.Audi makes great play of the fact that its lat-

est generation A4 Avant features a sportierchassis with a repositioned front axle, allnew steering and (on 3.0 TDI and 3.2 FSIvariants) a latest generation quattro systemwith 40:60 torque split. If you’ve money tospend on the options list, you can also bene-fit from ‘Audi Drive Select’, enabling tailoringof throttle, steering and suspension charac-teristics to suit driver preferences. So has theAudi A4 become a driver’s car to rival theBMW 3 Series? Not quite, although the dif-ferences are so small as to be virtuallyirrelevant. It’s a very capable handler. The company talks of a range of "new or

extensively revised engines", including twodirectly injected FSI petrol units and threecommon rail directly injected TDI diesels.Petrol buyers choose either the tur-bocharged 1.8 TFSI with either 120PS as amanual or 160PS as a Multitronic automatic.The other four cylinder petrol option is a2 1 1 P S 2 . 0 T F S I t u r b o c h a r g e d u n i t .Otherwise, it’s the normally aspirated butsilky-smooth V6 3.2 FSI with 265PS. Mostcustomers however, will want a diesel, sothere’s the familiar choice of 2.0 TDI (120,143 or 170PS), 2.7 TDI (190PS) and 3.0 TDI(240PS).If you want automatic transmission on your

A4 diesel, you’ll need to go for the 2.7 whichgets Audi’s efficient multitronic continuous-ly variable (CVT) ‘box. Otherwise, you’ll findyourself with a six-speed manual. If youwant quattro 4WD, you’ll need one of thebigger engines.Styling is a subjective matter, and it’s proba-

bly not my place to tell you what looks goodbut let’s just say the A4 Avant dodged theugly stick by quite some margin. The stylistshave been very clever in that they haveretained a fairly high roofline at the back forload volume purposes but have artfully usedchrome finishing to draw the eye to the sleekwindow lines instead. Couple that with anaggressive swage line that arcs up from the

front wheel back to the middle of the reararch and it’s a shape that embodies a lot ofdynamic tension. Space in the back is ratedat 490 litres with the rear seats in place and1,430 with the rear bench folded. This makes it the most accommodating in

its class and the practical features don’t stopthere. One tempting option is the poweredtailgate and loads can be secured using tie-down straps and a luggage net. Anotheroption that’s sure to be popular is the tele-scoping bar and securing belt system thatproved such a success on the previous A4Avant. Build quality is typically excellent; thedepth of engineering that has gone into thedesign of the cabin being simply staggering. With approximate premiums of around

£1,200 over its saloon counterpart, the A4Avant is competitively priced against its pre-mium rivals when trim levels and poweroutputs are taken into account. Gone are thedays when you could buy a Volkswagen or aSEAT and there wasn’t a great deal of differ-ence in perceived quality between them andthe Audi model that was based on the sameplatform. Nowadays, you can see where themoney has been spent or, in the case ofSEAT, the materials quality has been deliber-ately downgraded.

Depending on which engine you choose, there’s the option of either a conventionalsix-speed manual transmission, a revisedtiptronic automatic or a smoother version ofthe six-speed multitronic continuously vari-able transmission (CVT). Which means noroom for the twin-clutch S tronic then.No car is perfect though and the A4 Avant

does raise a few questions. Somewhat curi-ously, it’s not possible to buy one with thebest gearbox (the twin clutch S tronic) atAudi’s disposal.Putting the power tailgate and telescopic

load bar on the options list also looks a littlemean.Other than that, it’s hard to see this one

going anywhere other than straight to thetop of the sales charts among the best com-pact executive load luggers.

The Ford Ka may be smallbut it is perfectly formedTHE second generation Ford Katakes a less controversial routethan the original version. For allthat, it may prove to be just assuccessful. Jonathan Crouchreports.Bigger but not too big, faster but

not too fast, plusher but not tooplush, Ford’s Ka citycar treads afine line in second generationguise. Fortunately, it has a hugebank of customers loyal from thefirst generation version to fallback on if all else fails. There’s amore efficient petrol engine onoffer, plus a diesel for the firsttime. The Ka was a car that Ford was

very hesitant to replace – andyou can see why. This citycar hasthe highest loyalty levels of anyproduct thanks to a 12 year pro-d u c t i o n r u n f o r t h e f i r s tgeneration model and an iconicshape that if you loved, you real-ly loved. Nearly one and a halfmillion examples have beensold, half a million of those inthe UK, where the car has beenthe citycar segment leader since2000. The MK2 model doesn’treally have its predecessor’s love-it-or-hate-it Marmite appeal, butit’s unquestionable a better car.Ford have developed it as a jointventure with Fiat, so this modelrolls off the same productionlines in Tychy, Poland as themore daringly-styled Fiat 500,sharing its engines and the sameplatform design. The original Ka was renowned

for its go-kart like handling andi t s r e p l a c e m e n t h a s b e e ndesigned to be just as fun andrewarding to drive, with whatFord claim are the most excitingdriving dynamics of any smallcar. The company’s chassis engi-neering experts have tuned thesuspension, steering, and chas-sis with their usual meticulousattention to detail and final test-ing was conducted using acombination of public roads,proving grounds and race tracks– i n c l u d i n g t h e l e g e n d a r yNürburgring in Germany.During the engineering process,

information was exchanged withthe team developing the largerFiesta, and certain components, such as the tyres, were jointlydeveloped for both models. The1.2-litre 69PS Duratec petrolengine is a huge improvementon the wheezy old petrol 1.3used in the old Ka, while the75PS 1.3-litre Duratorq TDCi tur-bodiesel is a good option forthose likely to cover largermileages. You might mistake this Ka as a

shrunken version of the Fiestasupermini from the outside but

inside, it’s very much its own car– and much more avant garde, with what Ford like to call a‘kinetic’ design philosophy. Boldcontrasts and expressive colourshave been deliberately chosen toreflect the more adventuroustastes of the typical Ka customer. These are combined with someimaginative design details togive the interior a fashionableand fun personality which, Fiat500 apart, is pretty unique in thecitycar segment. One thing that the old Ka wasn’t

was roomy and practical. Thesecond generation car isn’t hugeof course (there’s only so muchyou can do with a bodyshell thissmall) but it is a huge improve-m e n t . T h e re’s s u r p r i s i n g l ygenerous interior space andcomfortable accommodation forfour adults and their belongings, though acceptable rear seatlegroom will depend on the frontseat passengers not resemblingbasketball players. The highseating position, carefully placedcontrols and excellent visibilityshould make this Ka easy todrive for owners of all ages. And safety? Well, at the heart of

the vehicle is a tough bodyshell, which has been developed toprovide a strong, stable crashstructure to protect passengersin case of an accident. This hasb e e n c o m b i n e d w i t h a nIntelligent Protection System(IPS), which integrates airbags, restraint systems and seatingtechnologies to provide whatFord claims is a highly effectiveoccupant safety system.Buyers choose between four dif-

ferent trim levels - Studio, Style,Style + and Zetec, plus there arevarious option packs to consider.Specify the Bluetooth-enabledConnectivity Kit, and the Kacomes equipped with Bluetoothmobile phone connectivity, aUSB port to play music filesthrough the sound system ands t e e r i n g w h e e l c o n t r o l s .Combine this with the six-speak-er CD sound systems on offerand owners should have all thenecessary equipment to keepp a s s e n g e r s c o n n e c t e d a n dentertained.A citycar like this has to be both

cheap to run and kind to theenvironment and of course, Fordloudly proclaims this Ka to beboth. Of the two economical, lowemission engines on offer, thevast majority of sales will be ofthe 1.2-litre 69PS Duratec petrolunit, which has cut fuel con-s u m p t i o n b y 2 1 p e r c e n tcompared to the previous 1.3-litre Ka.

THE Suzuki Swift now deserves abigger claim on your attention. AndyEnright explains whySuzuki’s key problem when it came

to sales of their original Swift super-mini was that the car was so easy tooverlook. For the same price asSuzuki wanted for the Swift, therewere all manner of rivals that werequicker, more practical, boasted abetter badge or were promoted farmore effectively. Try to define thebrand values of the Swift. Tough, isn’t it? Needing to act decisively ifthey were to stop haemorrhaging ahuge opportunity cost in the lucra-tive supermini sector, the Japanesecompany unleashed a completelynew Swift that, for the first time in avery long time indeed, had com-mentators abuzz with excitementabout a new Suzuki tot.The tactics used in developing this

model are not new. Honda andToyota had shown in the past thatplenty could be lost in the transla-tion when small cars were exportedfrom Japan to Europe and hadembarked on design and manufac-turing ventures in Europe to offerthis huge block of customers a littlemore of what they fancied. Firstshown at the 2004 Paris Motor Show, the Suzuki Swift benefits from adetermined ‘Europeanisation’ inso-far as a dedicated team of designersand engineers have collaboratedclosely with European automotive

professionals and enthusiasts,The first job for Suzuki was to devel-op a European centre of operationswhere rival cars could be bench-marked and analysed. Six monthsspent understanding what makesWestern superminis so differentfrom Oriental ones resulted in clearchanges to the handling, packagingand design of the initial proposal."The Swift is a car that European

buyers will no longer overlook quiteso easily"

Succeed

The first good thing to say about theSwift, priced from just over £8,000, isthat it’s no bad looker. For yearswe’ve received a stream of smallSuzukis that, while being reasonablygood to drive, just looked a little tooalien to succeed as a mainstreamproposition. Anybody who has driv-en a Wagon R+ will know that it’senormous fun to drive but few evergot past the setsquare looks. TheSwift is refreshingly different, offer-ing what Suzuki calls a "1.5 box"design. Rather than being an amor-p h o u s b l o b , t h e S w i f t h a s apronounced bonnet line and a veryshapely contour along its shoulders.A wide airdam and big headlampsgive the car a distinctive ‘face’ andthe big wheels at each corner of thecar give the impression that it’ssolidly planted to the road. The

black pillars produce a floatingglasshouse effect and the wrap-around glazing helps to promotebetter all round visibility. The rear ofthe car is even more expressive, withthickset haunches and a roof thatmelds into an integrated spoiler. The interior is also very different

from what we’ve come to expectfrom Suzuki. Again a wraparoundtheme dominates, with smoothlycurved surfaces and a number ofbright ideas. The illuminated ringaround the speedometer is a wel-come change from the usual chromerings and the three-spoke steeringwheel looks agreeably sporty. Takingits cue from Suzuki’s sports bikeexpertise, the tachometer dial fea-tures a zero mark at the six o’clockposition. A centrally mounted infor-mation display takes care of thetime, fuel consumption and outsidetemperature functions. Suzuki havelistened to customers who are tiredof manipulating tiny, fiddly audioand climate buttons and haveinstead opted for big, easy to reachdial-type controls. The audio systemcan also be operated from a set ofoptional wheel-mounted switches. One of the difficulties inherent in

bringing a new model to market isfinding the manufacturing capacityto offer a decent range of engines. All too often we see new cars arrivewith only one powerplant offered, thus hobbling their chances while

Commentators ‘abuzzwith excitement’ aboutthe new Suzuki Swift

they’re still breathing the heady oxygen ofpublicity. Fortunately, Suzuki benefited fromlong term planning with this car and offerthree petrol engines and a diesel unit. Theentry-level option is a 91bhp 1.3-litre petrolunit that will probably be the biggest seller.Next up is a 100bhp 1.5-litre petrol power-plant and then comes the 64bhp 1.3-litreDDiS diesel. This diesel unit is particularlyinteresting, featuring common rail architec-ture allied to a turbocharger and intercooler. The result is a surprisingly flat torque curvethat offers strong responses at a wide rangeof engine speeds. The final option is the 1.6-litre 125bhp engine found exclusively in theSwift Sport. The 1.3-litre petrol engine is capable of hit-

ting 60mph from standstill in 11 seconds onthe way to its 109mph top speed. The 1.5-litre option cuts a second from that time andhas a top speed of 115mph, although thosefigures are dulled slightly if you substitutethe standard manual transmission for theautomatic gearbox. The Swift Sport can dothe 0-60mph sprint in 8.9s and comes uptrumps with an enjoyably pure and engagingdriving experience. Fuel economy is key in a

car like the Swift and averages of 45.6mpgand 43.5mpg for the 1.5 and 1.5-litre petrolengines respectively is a good showing.Better still is the diesel’s 61.4mpg. Also worthmentioning is the diesel’s 119g/km emis-sions showing which now places it inaffordable tax band B.One of the key factors in the Swift’s handling

and packaging is the fact that the chassisoffers the class widest track (1470mm wideat the front and 1480 at the back), which inturn translates into the greatest overallwidth of any car in the supermini class(1,690mm). Coupled with a long wheelbaseand compact engines, this frees up plenty ofroom in the cabin and allows for a 213-litreluggage area. The Sport model gets stiffenedsuspension for a livelier feel at the wheel.Suzuki has worked hard to Europeanise the

car and to offer the sort of safety and securi-ty features that will attract family buyers. With plenty of space and distinctive styling –especially in sporty three door guise – theSwift looks better equipped than any previ-ous Suzuki to shift serious numbers in thesupermini sector.

FORD had to take a few risks withthe latest Mondeo to keep at thefront of the medium, range mar-ketplace. They have and it’s paidoff, as Andy Enright reportsIt’s probably fair to say that Ford

don’t have quite as much as theywould have liked riding on thiscurrent Mondeo.Had the market sector where the Mondeo

campaigns been in the rudest of health,Ford probably wouldn’t need to be hawkingparts of its business around to the highestbidders but the Blue Oval is dealing withsome tough trading conditions the best wayit knows how – through bold and innovativeproduct development. Certainly, the latestMondeo clearly demonstrates that Fordhasn’t bottled it when it comes to putting itsmoney where its mouth is.The third generation Mondeo was on sale

for six years and although it did extremelywell for Ford, its marketplace has in recenttimes been drying up quite severely. Back in2000 when this car first appeared, sales forthis segment were a healthy 339,000 carsper year. By 2005, it had shrunk to 270,000models and projections for the next fewyears show the curve bottoming out butnevertheless still heading downhill. Small4x4s and compact MPVs as well as premiumsmall cars and compact executive modelshave all tempted drivers out of the tradi-tional middleweight and Ford have had tothink long and hard about how to woo thesecustomers back. When I first saw this Mondeo, I was struck

with an intense feeling of déjà vu. The rea-son was quite simple. I’d driven to work thatday in a Ford S-MAX MPV and the Mondeo’sinterior, its detailing, its exterior propor-tioning and most of its mechanicals areshared with that vehicle. Anybody who’sdriven an S-MAX will attest to the fact thatthis is no bad thing.

"Ford took some risks with this car. It’spaid off…."

Getting down to Mondeo specifics, prices

start at around £16,000 for the entry-levelEdge 1.6-litre 110PS five-door and rise to£27,045 for the 2.5T 220PS Titanium X Sportestate. On average the latest Mondeo ispriced £300 below the outgoing equivalentmodels. That’s despite the fact that it bene-fits from £700 worth of added equipmentacross the range including things like Ford’sElectronic Stability Program (ESP), aThatcham Category 1 Alarm, ISOFIX child-seat fixings, steering wheel controls for thekey vehicles technologies, a driver's kneeairbag, 'follow me home' lighting and a fea-ture unique to Ford – Easyfuel . Thisprevents drivers putting petrol into a dieselpowered car or vice-versa. It is estimatedthis accidental mis-fueling affects over150,000 UK drivers every year.

Features

As you’d expect, all the usual features are inplace. Even the basic Edge variant gets air-conditioning, cruise control, a leathersteering wheel, a CD stereo with an MP3connection socket, seven air-bags, ABS withElectronic Brake Assist (EBA), power frontwindows, remote central locking, a quickclear heated front windscreen, plus powerand heated door mirrors.Zetec trim is what most buyers will opt for,

recognizable by 16-inch alloys and frontfoglights. Prices range from £17,395 for the1.6-litre 125PS saloon and hatchback vari-ants to £20,795 for the 2.0-litre TDCi 130PSestate. The most popular derivative isexpected to be a Zetec five-door 140PS TDCidiesel which is priced at £19,545. Next upare Ghia and Titanium trims, both pricedfrom £19,145 for the 2.0-litre 145PS saloonto £22,895 for the 2.5 220PS estate. With theGhia, you get larger alloys, automatic head-lights and rain-sensing wipers, power folddoor mirrors, a Sony stereo with six CD in-dash auto-changer. The Titanium gives youa more luxurious feel with brushed metalinterior trim, a different wheel design andsports front seats. At the top of the range, the Titanium X series aims to emphasisemodern technology with a ‘contemporary’interior further and costs from £21,645 forthe 2.0i five-door to £25,545 for the 2.2

Mondeo risks pay off for Ford

TDCi estate. At the top of therange, there’s the Titanium X Sportmodels (priced from £26,895) offereverything but the kitchen sink interms of equipment. There’s a big degree of carry-over ofengines with the entry-level power-plant being the 1.6-litre petrolDuratec engine and the range-top-per being the 2.5-litre turbocharged222bhp unit that’s seen in vehicleslike the S-MAX and the Focus ST.Diesel engine provision is decent aswell, with the 1.8-litre DuratorqTDCi unit marking the first point ofentry, an engine which also comesin the eco-friendly ECOnetic vari-ant of this car, a model which putsout emissions of just 139g/km. This1.8 TDCi engine and the well-proven 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi unitm o p u p a b i g p e r c e n t a g e o f

Mondeo sales. A 2.2-litre TDCi unitsits at the top of the range.Take a seat inside the car and you’llnotice high quality surfaces, mate-rials and finishes. As with theoutside, dynamic lines and stylingcurves are again evident, plus thelow profile instrument panel pro-vides very generous cabin space forfront seat occupants. The flow-through centre console allows thegear shifter to be located high andwithin easy ergonomic reach of thedriver.

Design

The design team has also paid greatattention to interior detailing, andexamples of this include new gener-ation infotainment systems, plust h e n e x t g e n e ra t i o n o f Fo rd ' s

Human Machine Interface (HMI).This easy to use system features thesame steering-wheel toggle switch-es seen on new Galaxy and S-MAX,but introduces the availability of alarge central LCD screen with fullcolour graphics situated betweenthe main analogue instruments infront of the driver. Rear seat head-room and legroom have also comein for scrutiny by the Mondeodevelopment team and these havebeen maximized for occupant com-fort and safety. The Mondeo has a very tough tar-

get to aim at, with all manner ofdifferent vehicles now nipping in tograb a mouthful of the mediumrange pie. As a result, Ford had tostep out and take some risks withthe design of this car. They have –and it’s paid off.

Honda Civic isnow even betterHONDA’S Civic has been mildlyimproved. It still makes much of thechasing pack feel very old indeed.Has any car ever changed quite as much as

Honda’s Civic? Once an old person’s run-about, it is these days something of atechnological showcase, this transformationachieved in just a couple of generations. Thiscurrent model features a higher-tech 1.4-litrei-VTEC petrol engine to join the 1.8 and 2.0-litre i-VTEC units already included in a rangethat also incorporates a great 2.2-litre dieselengine. Great design, sharp driving mannersand excellent dealer backup all come asstandard whichever model you choose. It’s not too often a car is launched that, at a stroke,

manages to make all of its rivals look way behind thecurve. This however, is what Honda has managed withtheir current eighth generation Civic, a car that markedout a new generation of family hatches. This car, morethan any other, has been responsible for driving downthe average age of Honda ownership. The Civic namestill stands for impeccable practicality, space and relia-bility but these days, there’s a bit of spice to it too.Recent changes see improvements to the entry-level 1.4-litre petrol unit and a wider transmission choice.Four engines are offered at present. The entry level

powerplant is now a 100bhp 1.4-litre i-VTEC petrol unit, quicker, cleaner and quieter than the old 82bhp i-DSiengine. Emissions are down from 139g/km to 134g/kmof CO2 and if you want to get that down still further, there’s the option of Honda’s next-generation 6-speed i-SHIFT automated manual transmission which returns132g/km. Here, the driver can choose between eitherAuto Mode for a more relaxed driving style, or ManualMode for a more involving drive, using the sequentialgearshift or steering wheel mounted paddles – the leftpaddle controlling down-shifts and the right paddle forup-shifts.If you want a bit more punch, there’s a 139bhp 1.8-litre

petrol engine (now with the option of a conventional 5-speed auto ‘box), with a 2.0-litre version of this unitoffered on the flagship Type-R. The most popular enginein the range is the 139bhp 2.2-litre diesel unit. All unitsare mated with a six-speed manual gearbox, making theCivic one of the only cars in the family hatch sector tobe equipped with six-speed gearboxes across all of itsrange. The torquey 2.2-litre diesel unit remains the real star

and the slick, wristy six-speed manual gearbox will haveyou punching up and down the ratios just for the sheerfun of it. When this Civic hatch was first launched, manythought it was a case of style over substance, as thecomplex and expensive multilink rear suspension of theprevious model was replaced by a more rudimentarytorsion beam arrangement. While the torsion beam isn’tquite as adept at the very limit as a decent multilink, it’svery very good and 99% of the Civic’s clientele willappreciate the space benefits it brings. You’d have to be a real Honda anorak to notice the

changes that have been made to this car. Uprated exteri-or plastics and a restyled rear combination light clusterhave been used to make the car’s overall appearancemore premium, while changes to the grille have beenmade to aid cooling and accommodate the new auto’box for 1.8-litre models. Inside, uprated plastics andbetter quality trim materials have been used, includinga brushed metal effect trim and matt finish, as seen inthe Type R. Smarter seat fabrics have also been intro-

duced.Although the MK8 Civic is significantly smaller than the

previous generation version on the outside, the compa-ny claims that room inside is just as generous as before.Instead of trying to understand how Honda has warpedthe time-space continuum, it’s easier to spot the simpleengineering solutions they’ve employed. Like the Jazz, the Civic features a fuel tank that’s centrally-mountedalong the cross member below the front seats. Thismeans that the seats in the rear can fold flat and there’sno intrusion into the cargo bay floor. Just because youopt for a three-door model doesn’t bring any penalty inluggage carrying ability, the 485 litres of loading spaceidentical to the more family-friendly five-door car.All versions of this Honda are generously specified, with

the top models featuring equipment usually only foundon far bigger cars. Standard across the range are featureslike climate control air-conditioning, Vehicle StabilityAssist (VSA), trip computer, front, side and curtainairbags, rake and reach adjustable steering column andrear ‘Magic’ seats. High grade models feature innova-tions such as automatic lights and wiper functions, highintensity discharge headlamps, Dual Zone ClimateControl and retractable door mirrors, in addition tooptions such as alloy wheels, DVD satellite navigationand leather trim. The popular Type-S variant is fitted asstandard with silver-stitched black alcantara seats and aleather trimmed steering wheel. Peer into the footwelland you’ll spot a natty aluminium pedal set too.Previous Civics have built a reputation for Honda as

being amongst the safest cars in their class and this carcontinues the theme. With a stronger body structureand subframes, recessed pedals, double pretensionerson the front seatbelts and side curtain airbags, this carhas achieved a Euro NCAP five star result for front andside impact safety, three stars for pedestrian safety andfour stars for child protection safety. The Civic’s 138bhp diesel engine is one of the best of itsilk and it’s cost effective too, weighing in at either Group10 or Group 11 insurance, dependent on trim level. Withan average fuel consumption figure of 54.3mpg it’s cer-tainly not going to cost the earth in terms of ongoingrunning costs. All Civics perform well in terms of fuelconsumption. Even the racy 2.0-litre Type R is good for31mpg and unlike many of its rivals, it’s quite easy toreplicate this figure as long as you’re not revving theengine hard.Prices aren’t cheap, pitched well above those of main-

stream rivals, so it’s just as well that depreciation isanother area where the Civic excels, a base 1.4i modelclinging onto 50% of its value after three years and theType R GT a massive 57%, compared to 45% for anentry-level Ford Focus ST. Some of that margin will belost due to higher servicing costs for the Honda butCivics remain cars that, once you’ve swallowed the stiffpurchase price, are then not exorbitant to keep on theroad. Some have never bonded with the Civic’s styling while

others claim that it will date very rapidly but these aresubjective points. What’s beyond debate is that in theeighth generation Civic, Honda has brought to market abold, groundbreaking vehicle that caught the rest of themarket on the hop. The range of engines offered mightnot be the broadest but each is extremely good andthese days, even the entry level 1.4 i-VTEC powerplant isnow worth seeking out. The interiors will also split opin-ion but you can’t fault Honda for going out on a limb.Sales to date have been strong despite stiff competition

from the likes of Ford, Vauxhall and Renault. In reducingthe average age of Civic buyers, Honda hopes that brandloyalty will stem from this cadre of Civic owners. Giventhe take up so far, it’s a strategy that may well have somelegs.

NEWS

A step up theKorea ladder withthe Hyundai GetzHYUNDAI’S Getz 1.4 has what ittakes to carve a place for itself inthe ultra competitive superminisector.Ask most people about Hyundai

and they’ll associate the compa-ny with small cars. Although theKorean marque has diversifiedinto 4x4s, executive saloons andcoupes, it’s still best known foreconomical hatches. All of whichmakes it hard to believe that theHyundai Getz represents theirfirst foray into the superminisector.Yes, we’ve had tiny Citycars like

the Atoz and the Amica andwe’ve had larger mid-rangehatches like the Accent and itsdim, distant and aptly namedpredecessor the Pony but thelucrative supermini sector wasone that Hyundai chose toignore. Why? Part of the answermay have been the heat of thecompetition. The other was thatno existing Hyundai chassis plat-form was the right size for thejob. A whole new car would haveto be expensively developed.T h e r e f o r e i t w a s n o g o o dembarking upon this course ofaction until they were confidentof producing a genuinely com-petitive product.

The Getz represents just thatproduct. Examined here with themodern 1.4-litre petrol engineand GSi trim, it’s a car thatappeals on many levels. The£8,117 sticker price will attractw h a t m a n y p e rc e i v e t o b eHyundai’s core market – bargainconscious mature buyers. Thoseare the easy sales. What marksthis car out as such a landmarksmall Hyundai is the fact that itwill cross boundaries and appealto car buyers who’d never evenconsidered a Hyundai. The neatgood looks are pert enough toattract younger buyers lookingfor a cute urban runabout andthe current facelifted look withthe wraparound headlamps rais-es the car’s visual game further. The 1.4-litre engine is available

in GSi or CDX trim and it’sunlikely that customers will feelshort changed. The engine uses amodern four-valve per cylinderconfiguration and continuousvariable valve timing (CVVT) forimproved efficiency and respon-siveness. Performance from the81bhp unit is fairly brisk, hitting60mph in a blink over 11 sec-onds on the way to a top speedof 106mph. Fuel consumption ispredictably good, the Getz man-

aging a combined economy figure of some47mpg. Of course, fuel economy is only apart of the total running cost of any car withother factors such as depreciation and serv-ice costs also contributing but the Getz fairswell on these scores too.Designed with the European market in

mind, the Getz was first unveiled at the 2002Geneva Motor Show. The styling is Euro-lookclean without being boring, devoid of thefussiness that mars many small cars.Hyundai has done its homework, realisingthat around 80% of worldwide appetite forsophisticated superminis is accounted for byEurope. Derived from the Clix sports car con-cept, the chassis and suspension of the Getzhas been designed from the outset to providea fun drive. Another advantage of that wheel-at-each-corner design is that internal spaceis optimised. The high roofline and taperingwaistline of the car give a pleasantly airy feel.Versatility is a big feature of the Getz. The

rear seat is a case in point. As well as slidingto allow for more legroom or more bootspace, the bench seat can recline and split ina conventional 60/40 fashion. Unlike manyrivals who only offer a split rear backrest, theGetz offers additional utility by splitting thecushion too, allowing for all sorts of novelconfigurations. One of the downsides of sucha system is often a compromise on safety, butHyundai’s designers have ensured that allthree rear seats are fitted with proper threepoint belts. Up front the seat belts are fittedwith pretensioners and are adjustable forheight. Twin front airbags are a welcome fea-ture and it’s worth bearing in mind that thereare plenty of cars that cost twice the Getz’sasking price that don’t offer such a provision.Electronic brakeforce distribution and anti-lock brakes are also standard on every model. At 3800mm long, the Getz is simplicity itself

to park and the 1660mm width makes it easyto slot through gaps in city traffic. Despitethese compact dimensions, it’s realistictransport for five, as long as the five in ques-tion aren’t rugby league players. As well asbeing spacious, the Getz is also easy on yourconscience. Around 89% of the car is said tobe recyclable, which may well be a record inthis class. Equipment levels are relativelygood with the 1.4-litre GSi being fitted withair-conditioning, a CD player, central lockingand electric windows as standard. The Hyundai Getz 1.4 GSi isn’t the most

technologically advanced supermini you canbuy and nor is it even the cheapest. What itdoes represent is a thoroughly modern andwell engineered car at a very competitiveprice. The fact that here is a small Hyundaiwhere the sticker price is not the key attrib-ute marks something of a watershed for theKorean company. No longer can we damnwith faint praise the fact that it’s good for aHyundai. The Getz 1.4 GSi is good full stop.

A matter of CorsaIF you associatet h e V a u x h a l lCorsa with mid-dle of the roadmediocrity, youmay need a sitdown after check-ing out the latestversion.S i m i l a r l y , i f

you’re a dyed-in-the-wool Corsabuyer, the latestmodel will be arude awakening. The reason why ist h a t V a u x h a l lwere one of thevery first manu-facturers to really buy into spreadingso-called ‘utility’ models right across theirrange. The introduction of the super practi-cal Zafira and Meriva models means thatthose who want to do the flipping and fold-ing thing with the seats have cars specificallydesigned for the task, freeing up models likethe Astra, and now the Corsa, to get on withthe business of looking rather good.No longer just a shopping trolley, the Corsa

now has real impact. The front end featuresa deep Vauxhall V-grille with aggressive airintakes under the bumper and a pair ofheadlamps that smear back along the wings.Bigger than the model it replaces, the Corsashares a platform with Fiat’s Grande Punto, the benefit of a rather complicated relation-ship between Fiat and General Motors that’stoo convoluted to go into here. Suffice to say,you may be reminded of the pretty Fiatwhen you spot the window by the A-pillarand the rather unconventional door out-lines.Climb inside and, if you’re used to the Astra,

you’ll feel immediately at home here. Thequality of materials used is leagues ahead ofthe old Corsa and like the Astra there’s thebulletproof feeling of build quality that’s asgood as anything in the sector. Just aboutthe only criticism of the Astra’s interior wasthat, although well built, it didn’t offer a

w h o l e l o t o fslick design tocatch the eye.T h e C o r s ac h a n g e s t h a tparticular scriptw i t h t ra n s l u -cent ambientlighting on thecentre consoleswitchgear, oneof those ‘sur-p r i s e a n ddelight’ featuresthat adds theall-importants h o w r o o mwow-factor. Theround air vents

and big satellite navigation screen (availableon high spec cars only) give the Corsa’s dasha far more modern, integrated look than thesomewhat piecemeal integration of technol-ogy of the old car.Four petrol engines and two diesels are on

offer. First up on the petrol menu are the1.2-litre and 1.4-litre units. Also available is a189bhp 1.6-litre VXR variant that will cer-tainly give the Clio Renaultsport 197 and theHonda Civic Type-R something to thinkabout.Able to hit 60mph in around 7 seconds and

with a 140mph top speed, this should be thefirst Corsa to really appeal to hardcore carenthusiasts rather than pimply teens. There’salso a 150PS version of the same engine in aslightly more affordable SRi version. Nomodern supermini can get by without adecent diesel engine and Vauxhall fortunate-ly have two at their disposal. The 123bhp1.7-litre diesel spearheads the line up, with abudget 1.3-litre CDTi acting as the entrylevel option.Despite its strong sales figures, Vauxhall

needed to give the Corsa a good whack upthe backside and the latest model shows thebenefits of this corporal approach. Smarter, prettier and a whole lot more sophisticated, the Corsa could well dominate sales chartsfor quite some time.

Torque is cheapA Woman's View - Will It Suit Me?

Rarely have I come across a car thatso obviously wasn’t designed forfemale consumption. A Mafia bossmaybe. Me and the family, no. Forthat, I rather liked the Chrysler 300C.To be frank, I’m rather sick of carsthat, in pandering to the needs offamilies end up rather patronisingthem. This one is its own hunk ofvery macho metal – and the more Ilooked at it, the more I liked it.

The Practicalities

The 300C is not an especially easycar to manoeuvre about and I wasgrateful for the rear parking sensorswhen I needed to reverse it into aparking bay. The high rear shelf lim-its rearward visibility and you’re leftwith a vague approximation of the300C’s extremities.

Behind the Wheel

Even with that amount of torque,1,928kg of car takes some shiftingb u t t h e e n g i n e n e v e r s o u n d sstrained or harsh. The direct injec-tion unit is very linear in its powerdelivery and the turbocharger getsgoing from very low engine speeds. This means that even while tricklingabout town, letting the engine and

gearbox do all the work for you, you’ll still return reasonable fuelconsumption figures.

Like every American car I’ve tried, the handling isn’t quite up to thestandard of its key European rivals. Ithought the steering to be somewhatvague and the slow-witted handlingdoes make the 300C feel a littlestodgy, an impression backed up bythe nautical levels of body roll thecar displays if the driver gets a littleenthusiastic at the tiller. Despite thisrelaxed attitude to cornering, theride quality is surprisingly garrulous. If you drive this car in a straight lineit will feel sporty which is doubtlessenough for the US domestic market.

Value for money

Chrysler claim an average of nearly35mpg for this car in CRD guise butpossibly an even bigger attraction isthe asking price. This looks like a£35-£40,000 piece of hardware andparked next to a BMW or Audi thatcosts this much, the Chrysler willdraw more admiring glances. Thereal kicker is that the sticker price isjust £27,495 on the road for thesaloon and only £1,000 more for theTouring estate. That’s about thesame as a decently specified BMW320d. I know what I’d rather have.

Standard features on the Chrysler300C include Electronic StabilityProgram (ESP) and an all-speedTraction Control System, front andrear side-curtain airbags, xenonHigh-Intensity Discharge (HID)headlamps, rain-sensing windscreenwipers and a rear park assist system. In the UK, the car is covered byChrysler’s three-year, 60,000 milewarranty.

Stretch out in that generously pro-portioned cabin and crank up theexcellent Boston Acoustics stereowhile ticking off the standard satel-lite navigation, air conditioning, heated seats, full leather trim, adjustable pedal set and so on. You’dneed to tack a good £5,000 onto thecost of its German rivals to get any-where near this. Suddenly the deallooks a whole lot more tempting.

Could I Live With One?

I hadn’t realised before I checked outthis car just how sick to the teeth Iam with sensible, practical familydesigns. If I was in the market for anExecutive saloon and didn’t mindmaking a statement, then yes, I’dconsider a 300C. Cars designed forwomen and families? Who needs‘em.

Chrysler 300C

Chrysler’s 300C executive saloon is a ‘bigbruiser’ of a car. June Neary found taking it for

a drive an enjoyable experience

As the credit crunchbites its not all bad news MOST city cars are built down to a price.TheToyota

iQ is different, catering to the more affluent buyerwho wants a hi-tech small car but doesn’t want toskimponquality.JonathanCrouchreportsLess than three metres long but packed with

intriguing design features, the Toyota iQ is anunashamedly upmarket city car that will appeal tothose who find a Smart too twee. Designed to seatthree adults and one child, the interior finish andexterior detailing are several notches above the citycarnorm.Toyota isn’t the first company to build and market acity car specifically to a more upmarket clientele. Itwas exactly this business model that Smart profitedso handsomely from and Toyota has followed suitwith its Prius hybrid vehicle, not strictly a city car inthe strictest definition, but most certainly a car tar-geted at wealthy urbanites. Given that the companyalready has the cheap and competent Aygo on itsbooks, backed up with the bigger and plusherYaris,a third tot would seem like overkill but the iQ is avery different proposition. If it wore a Lexus badge, thepropositionwouldbeawholelotclearer. This is a market sector that looks set for big expan-sion given the rapidly increasing costs of using a carin many metropolitan areas. Many car buyers arelooking to downsize without sacrificing comfort andstyle and it’s no secret that several premium manu-facturers are looking to service exactly this demand.TheycouldlearnathingortwofromToyota.The engine on offer is the well regarded 67bhp 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol unit used in the Aygo citycar. This powerplant is billed as the world’s lightest pro-duction engine. Like the Aygo, the iQ is urbantransport first and foremost, reflected in a sprint to60mph that takes around 15 seconds. If going fastisn’ttoomuchofapriority, there’salsotheoptionofaCVTMultidriveautomaticgearbox. At lower speeds the steering’s electric assistance

should make manoeuvring the car simplicity itselfandtheminimalfrontandrearoverhangswillmeanthat it’s easy to edge into even the tiniest parkingplaces. The tight 3.9m turning circle means thateven if you spot a parking place on the other side oftheroad,youmaybeabletothrowaquickU-turntosnaffleit.In order to appeal to an image conscious clientele,

the iQ had to look the part and with what Toyotadubs its foursquare‘super stance’, it looks like some-thing that’s just driven straight from a motor showstand. There’s a touch of the toy car about the waythe big 16-inch alloy wheels sit at each corner ofsuch a tiny vehicle. The wraparound rear glass, thesmoked headlamp units and the door mirrors withinbuilt indicators all indicate that this is no budget

Toyota iQ works smarter

city scoot but the real surprise anddelightfeaturescomeinside. The innovative asymmetric dash-

board was designed to open up thewhole cabin area. It ensures ample legroom for the front passenger, evenwhen the seat is in its furthest forwardposition. The all-round space andseating layout means there is ampleroom for three adults plus either achild passenger or luggage behind thedriver. The rear seats fold flat andthere’s a storage tray that slides frombelowtherearseat. The iQ is available in two grades, iQ

and iQ2, both of which feature nofewer than nine airbags including theworld’s first rear window curtainshield airbag. All models come withthe kind of standard specification thatyou’d expect in a much larger car. Theentry-level iQ rides on 15-inch alloywheels and projects a clean, contem-porary appearance with colour-keyeddoor mirrors and bumpers and heat-ed electrically adjustable door mirrorswithintegratedindicatorlamps.Air conditioning keeps things cool

inside, while the six-speaker soundsystem provides a radio, CD playerand MP3/WMA file playing fromdisc. There is also an auxiliary socketfor connection to personal MP3 play-ers. Electric windows, remote centrallocking, dark tinted privacy glass inthe rear window and leather trim forthe steering wheel and gear knob are

also all included, together with a ton-neaucoverfortherearluggagespace.First the basics. You’ll pay about the

same for an iQ as a comparably spec-ified 1.0-litre Yaris and about £1,200more than the plushest 1.0-litre Aygo.Bear in mind though that both thesealternatives can seat at least fouradults. Perhaps a more pertinentcomparison however, is with the two-seater smart fortwo, which in itsplushest form is only a few hundredpounds shy of an iQ for somethingmuchlessversatile.Toyota has committed to a low car-

bon dioxide figure for the iQ, with afigure of 99g/km achievable in themanual models. Fuel economy iseven more impressive than the Aygo,(which already manages over 60mpgon the combined cycle) as that sameengine achieves over 65mpg in theiQ.The result is what the brand sees as a‘landmark solution’. It’s certainly onethat will have a long term influenceon Toyota’s future vehicle develop-ment.Their marketing people call theiQ ‘the ultimate expression of refined, yet environmentally efficient urbanmobility’. If you’re tempted to dismissthat as advertising hyperbole, thenthis car is worth checking out. Notonly does it have the power to sur-prise but the power to shock. If youthought that all small cars were thesame, thenthinkagain.
