70 Coal People Magazine www.coalpeople.com The Longwall USA Show in Pittsburgh this past June was another winner as coal people displayed their wares with great pride. Laughs, handshakes, hugs, and even a few kisses, highlighted the show as old friends gathered to tell jokes and conduct business in an atmosphere of friendliness. The first day traffic was steady, but not overwhelming. Still, most of the visitors were decision makers and that made for a productive day. The second day was much busier, although it is apparent that companies are sending fewer people due to these tough economic times. All in all, a good, productive show. Although the show was top-notch, there were some trying moments in between that tested the mettle of Coal People Magazine reps, Chuck, Lisa, Alan and Courtney. Firstly, getting to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center was no easy task. Just driving through Pittsburgh’s city of triangles is a fierce challenge, but add to that with a parade and thousands of people milling around, celebrating the Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup championship, and it becomes a monster drive. Roads were closed off, and show- goers were “detoured” from one triangle to another. It was particularly tough for exhibitors pulling trailers with booths, equipment, etc. Still, the team made it to the center, undaunted and ready for sales action. Sorry to have missed Jack “The Licorice Stick Kid” Fink of Plymouth Bishop fame. Jack was bouncing around the show with a tag that said “Mary” Fink, so we’re not sure what his real name is. The “licorice stick kid” moniker comes honestly. Some years back when Jack was traveling the coal fields doing splicing work inside the mines, he noticed that most of the miners had a big “chaw” and, to keep up with the times, decided he was going to join them. However, tobacco made him sick so he opted for licorice sticks and filled his jaws with same. So while he was splicing cable for the miners, he was spitting away, unbeknownst by the miners that he was “chawing” on licorice. He took a lot of razzing when this was revealed in Coal People’s version of STAR, but he handled it, just like the good sport that he is. Jack is one of the great people of the industry. We’re sorry to have missed him, at the show. Another “in betweener” was an episode with Chuck and Lisa that ranks high as to how far a CPM sales person will go to meet a commitment with a client. Here’s how Lisa explains her “all wet” happening: “We were dressed and ready to attend the Bucyrus Oktoberfest at the Hofbrauhaus on South Water Street… appropriately named as this story unfolds. We departed from the Omni Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh on a stormy night with sheets of rain pelting us and severe lightning cracking at us. We got in a cab and headed for Hofbrauhaus, a 15-minute trip. About halfway there the roads looked questionable. Water was mounting and we weren’t sure if we should be driving through it. Our cab driver decided “we should” and through the water we went. He was an elderly man, a retired steelworker who only worked two days a week, and was clearly very nervous. Almost immediately, we were in trouble. The water was midway up to the doors on the cab and we started to float, along with three other cars. The cab driver called 911. When the EMS people arrived, they screamed in loud, annoying voices for us to “get out of the car. The Longwall USA Show in Pittsburgh this past June was another winner as coal people displayed their wares with great pride. Laughs, handshakes, hugs, and even a few kisses, highlighted the show as old friends gathered to tell jokes and conduct business in an atmosphere of friendliness. The fi rst day traffi c was steady, but not overwhelming.

Just driving through Pittsburgh’s city of triangles is a fi erce challenge, but add to that with a parade and thousands of people milling around, celebrating the Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup championship, and it becomes a monster drive. Roads were closed off, and show-goers were “detoured” from one triangle to another.

Some years back when Jack was traveling the coal fi elds doing splicing work inside the mines, he noticed that most of the miners had a big “chaw” and, to keep up with the times, decided he was going to join them. However, tobacco made him sick so he opted for licorice sticks and fi lled his jaws with same.

Here’s how Lisa explains her “all wet”

happening:

“We were dressed and ready to attend the Bucyrus Oktoberfest at the Hofbrauhaus on South Water Street… appropriately named as this story unfolds.

The water was midway up to the doors on the cab and we started to fl oat, along with three other cars. The cab driver called 911.

When the EMS people arrived, they screamed in loud, annoying voices for us to “get out of the car. Now.” To add to the misery, a power line was down and the fear shifted from the water to possible electrocution. Yikes! WE waded through

the mid-thigh water and got into an emergency vehicle. It was a crazy scene with sirens blaring from all directions. A tow truck removed the cab and the driver rode with him. There wasn’t room for us in the tow truck, so we were stranded. The cab driver apologized and promised to return in his own car and pick us up.

EMS vehicles were being called in every direction. We weren’t locals so we had no one to call. They just left us there. We were stranded under the Birmingham Bridge like a couple of trolls, with the heavy rain and lightning as severe as ever. A local newspaper reporter arrived on the scene and began interviewing the stranded victims. He offered to give us a ride, and, ironically, he was headed for the Hofbrauhaus. We couldn’t go to the Bucyrus party looking like a couple of river rats, so we opted for a return to the hotel.

Then a bit of luck – a city bus was coming down the road and we flagged it down, and he took us to within 10 blocks of our hotel. With the rain and lightning still fierce, we walked and walked, hoping we were going in the right direction to the hotel. A shuttle bus stopped at a red light and we immediately knocked on the window. He was kind enough to take us back to the hotel.

We literally ran through the lobby of the hotel, hoping nobody would notice us, but that wasn’t to happen. Later that night, Jason of T&N Electric Motor Exchange spotted us. He said, ‘Earlier I was eating in the restaurant in the lobby of the Omni and told my buddy ‘oh my gosh there goes Lisa and she looks like a drowned rat.’”

So much for not being noticed.

And, yes, we made it to the Bucyrus party, and it was worth the trip! Here’s a happening from your editor that ended with what was to be “the largest advertisement the world has ever known.” It all started harmlessly enough when Mirza Kozarcanin of TR Minecom in Victoria, Australia, talked to us about a co-op ad with Pyott-Boone Electronics of Tazewell, VA.

Mirza had the ad schedule planned, but had asked to please give him the measurements of the ads in millimeters, instead of inches. Shucks, that’s no big deal. Well, your editor, not a particularly great math head, computed the

conversion by hand and came up with a full page that would be 7,500 X 10,000 millimeters. Shortly after he was sent the conversion figures, Angie and Christina arrived to work and were more than a bit surprised and amused at the millimeter measurements that were sent to Mirza.

After a quick two minute conversion in the production department, the actual measurement was closer to 190 millimeters x 255 mm for a full page. The correction was sent to Mirza who must have known it was inaccurate. So, as you can see, an advertisement about the size of a billboard would have been created

Well, the jokes on us (Al). And we’d appreciate just a “millimeter” of a laugh.
