    PAINTING & COATING

    PART 1: GENERAL

    1.01 SECTION INCLUDES

    A. Decorative and high performance coating systems including, but not limited to the following:

    1. Surface preparation and field application of paints and coatings.

    2. Painting of interior and exterior exposed surfaces shown on the Drawings or Schedules as painted.

    1.04 DEFINITIONS

    A. "Exposed", as used to define surfaces to be painted, shall mean surfaces exposed to view in any accessible space, area or enclosure including both sides of doors, panels, access doors and covers and shall include exterior exposed surfaces.

    B. "Paint or Painting", as used herein, shall include various coating systems and materials such as primers, emulsions, enamels, stains, sealers and fillers, and other applied materials whether used as prime, intermediate or finish coats and of various degrees of opacity or sheen.

    C. Minimum Dry Film Thickness (MDFT or DFT): Specified by minimum dry film thickness in millimeters, per coat. Where manufacturers recommendations require greater dry film thicknesses, or if no MDFT is specified, follow manufacturers recommendations.

    1.05 SUBMITTALS

    A. Comply with Section 01 33 00.

    B. Product Data: Provide data on all finishing products.

    C. Samples: Submit two samples, 300 x 300 mm in size illustrating selected colors and textures for each color selected.

    D. Manufacturer's Instructions: Indicate special surface preparation procedures, substrate conditions requiring special attention.

    E. Detailed Painting Schedule: Submit a Detailed Painting Schedule for review by the Engineer. Prepare this schedule on the basis of the surfaces, types of paint materials, number of coats required, and list the brand name of the product of the manufacturer proposed for each use.

    F. Color Samples: Submit two (2) labeled 300 mm square samples for each color and texture to simulate actual conditions. Show various stages of finish on displays.

    G. High Performance Coating Systems: Prepare mockups or field samples for Engineers review and to establish requirements for ratings and finish texture:

    1. Correct areas, modify method of application/installation or adjust finish texture as directed by Engineer to comply with specified requirements.

    2. Maintain mockups and field sample accessible to serve as a standard of quality for this Section.

    3. Sample shall consist; on wall surfaces and other exterior and interior components, duplicate finishes of prepared samples. Provide full-coat finish samples on at least 5 m of surface until required sheen, color and texture are obtained; simulate finished lighting conditions for review of in-place work.

    1.06 QUALIFICATIONS A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in manufacturing the products specified in this Section

    with minimum 5 years documented experience.

    B. Applicator: Company specializing in performing the work of this Section with minimum 5 years experience.

    1.07 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS A. Conform to applicable code for flame and smoke rating requirements for finishes.

    1.08 MOCKUPS

    A. Provide mockups of paint under provisions of Section 01 40 00.

    B. Provide field sample panel, 3 m long or 5 m of each paint type, illustrating coating color, texture, and finish:

    1. Correct areas, modify method of application/installation, or adjust finish texture as directed by the Engineer to comply with specified requirements.

    2. Simulate finished lighting conditions for review of samples.

    C. Maintain field samples accessible throughout the entire application time period to serve as a standard of quality for work of this Section.

    D. Locate where directed.

    E. Accepted mockup may remain as part of the work.

    1.09 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

    A. Comply with Section 01 61 00.

    B. Deliver, store, protect and handle products to site under provisions of Section 01 61 00.

    C. Deliver paint materials to the project in original containers and packages, bearing the manufacturer's labels, indicating name, type, brand, contents by volume, for pigment, vehicle and volatile constituents. Unless otherwise directed by the Engineer, deliver paints ready-mixed. Order in advance in large enough quantities and in ample time to facilitate the work.

    D. Container label shall include manufacturer's name, type of paint, brand name, lot number, brand code, coverage, surface preparation, drying time, cleanup requirements, color designation, and instructions for mixing and reducing.

    E. Store paint materials at minimum ambient temperature of 7 oC and a maximum of 32 oC, in ventilated area and as required by manufacturer's instructions.

    1.10 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS A. Do not apply materials when surface and ambient temperatures are outside the temperature

    ranges required by the paint product manufacturer.

    B. Do not apply exterior coatings when relative humidity is outside the humidity ranges required by the paint product manufacturer.

    C. Minimum Application Temperatures for Latex Paints: 7 oC for interiors; 10 oC for exterior; unless required otherwise by manufacturer's instructions.

    D. Minimum Application Temperature for Varnish and Finishes: 18 oC for interior or exterior, unless required otherwise by manufacturer's instructions.

    E. Provide lighting level of 860 lux measured mid-height at substrate surface.

    1.11 EXTRA MATERIALS

    A. Furnish under provisions of Section 01 77 00. B. Provide 10 liters of each color, type, and surface texture to Owner. C. Label each container with color, type, texture, room locations, in addition to the manufacturer's

    label.

    PART 2: PRODUCTS

    2.01 MATERIALS

    A. Coatings: Ready mixed, except field catalyzed coatings. Process pigments to a soft paste consistency, capable of being readily and uniformly dispersed to a homogeneous coating; good flow and brushing properties; capable of drying or curing free of streaks or sags.

    B. Use products of the same manufacturer for succeeding coats. Where primer is shop applied to steel, subsequent coats may be the product of another manufacturer provided the coatings are mutually compatible. Review other Sections in which primers are provided to ensure compatibility of the total systems for various substrates.

    C. Colors, textures and degree of luster shall be as selected by the Engineer. Tint prime and undercoats approximately to the shade of the final coat but with sufficient variation to distinguish them from the preceding coat. Proprietary names used to designate colors or materials are not intended to imply that products named are required or to exclude equal products of other manufacturers.

    D. Specular Gloss Range:

    1. Ranges shall be determined in accordance with ASTM D 523:

    Sheen Geometry/Degree Gloss/Range

    Flat 85 Below 15

    Eggshell 60 5 to 20

    Semigloss 60 30 to 65

    Gloss 60 Over 65

    2. In locations where ambient temperature-humidity conditions encourage the ready formation of mildew, use paints with additional mildew inhibitive agent incorporated during the manufacturing process, of type and in concentration recommended by the paint manufacturer to withstand such mildew formation.

    E. Accessory Materials: Linseed oil, shellac, turpentine, paint thinners and other materials not specifically indicated but required to achieve the finishes specified, of commercial quality.

    F. Patching Materials: Latex filler.

    G. Fastener Head Cover Materials: Latex filler.

    H. Refer to Finishes Schedule; colors shall be chosen from manufacturers range and samples.

    PART 3: EXECUTION

    3.01 EXAMINATION

    A. Verify site conditions under provisions of Division 01.

    B. Verify that surfaces substrate conditions are ready to receive work as instructed by the product manufacturer.

    C. Examine surfaces scheduled to be finished prior to commencement of work. Report any condition that may potentially affect proper application.

    D. Test shop applied primer for compatibility with subsequent cover materials.

    E. Measure moisture content of surfaces using an electronic moisture meter. Do not apply finishes unless moisture content of surfaces are below the following maximums:

    1. Plaster and Gypsum Wallboard: 12 %.

    2. Masonry, Concrete, and Concrete Unit Masonry: 12 %.

    3. Concrete Floors: 8 %.

    3.02 PREPARATION

    A. Remove or mask electrical plates, hardware, light fixture trim, escutcheons, and fittings prior to preparing surfaces or finishing.

    B. Correct defects and clean surfaces which affect work of this Section. Remove existing coatings that exhibit loose surface defects.

    C. Seal with shellac and seal marks which may bleed through surface finishes.

    D. Impervious Surfaces: Remove mildew by scrubbing with solution of tri-sodium phosphate and bleach. Rinse with clean water and allow surface to dry.

    E. Aluminum Surfaces Scheduled for Paint Finish: Remove surface contamination by steam or high pressure water. Remove oxidation with acid etch and solvent washing. Apply etching primer immediately following cleaning.

    F. Asphalt, Creosote, or Bituminous Surfaces Scheduled for Paint Finish: Remove foreign particles to permit adhesion of finishing materials. Apply latex based compatible sealer or primer.

    G. Insulated Coverings: Remove dirt, grease and oil from canvas and cotton.

    H. Concrete Floors: Remove contamination, acid etch and rinse floors with clear water. Verify that required acid-alkali balance is achieved. Allow to dry.

    I. Gypsum Board Surfaces: Fill minor defects with filler compound. Spot prime defects after repair.

    J. Galvanized Surfaces: Remove surface contamination and oils and wash with solvent. Apply coat of etching primer.

    K. Concrete and Unit Masonry Surfaces Scheduled to Receive Paint Finish: Remove dirt, loose mortar, scale, salt or alkali powder, and other foreign matter. Remove oil and grease with a solution of tri-sodium phosphate; rinse well and allow to dry. Remove stains caused by weathering of corroding metals with a solution of sodium metasilicate after thoroughly wetting with water. Allow to dry.

    L. Plaster Surfaces: Fill hairline cracks, small holes, and imperfections with latex patching plaster. Make smooth and flush with adjacent surfaces. Wash and neutralize high alkali surfaces.

    M. Uncoated Steel and Iron Surfaces: Remove grease, mill scale, weld spatter, dirt, and rust. Where heavy coatings of scale are evident, remove by hand power tool wire brushing or sandblasting; clean by washing with solvent. Apply a treatment of phosphoric acid solution, ensuring weld joints, bolts, and nuts are similarly cleaned. Spot prime paint after repairs.

    N. Shop Primed Steel Surfaces: Sand and scrape to remove loose primer and rust. Feather edges to make touch-up patches inconspicuous. Clean surfaces with solvent. Prime bare steel surfaces. Prime metal items including shop primed items.

    O. Metal Doors Scheduled for Painting: Seal top and bottom edges with primer.

    3.03 APPLICATION

    A. Apply products in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

    B. Do not apply finishes to surfaces that are not dry.

    C. Apply each coat to uniform finish.

    D. Apply each coat of paint slightly darker than preceding coat unless otherwise approved.

    E. Vacuum clean surfaces free of loose particles. Use tack cloth just prior to applying next coat.

    F. Allow applied coat to dry before next coat is applied.

    G. Where clear finishes are required, tint fillers to match wood. Work fillers into the grain before set. Wipe excess from surface.

    H. Prime concealed surfaces of interior and exterior woodwork with primer paint.

    I. Prime concealed surfaces of interior woodwork scheduled to receive stain or varnish finish with gloss varnish reduced 25 % with mineral spirits.

    J. Paint exposed surfaces whether or not colors are designated in "schedules", except where a surface or material is specifically indicated not to be painted or is to remain natural. Where an item or surface is not specifically mentioned, paint the same as similar adjacent materials or surfaces. If color or finish is not designated, the Engineer will select from standard colors or finishes available.

    K. Do not paint prefinished items, concealed surfaces, finished metal surfaces, operating parts, and labels.

    3.04 FINISHING MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT A. Refer to Divisions 23 & 26 for color coding and identification of equipment and conduits.

    B. Paint shop primed equipment. Paint shop prefinished items occurring at interior areas.

    C. Remove unfinished louvers, grilles, covers, and access panels on mechanical and electrical components and paint separately.

    D. Prime and paint insulated and exposed pipes, conduit, boxes, insulated and exposed ducts, hangers, brackets, collars and supports, except where items are prefinished.

    E. Paint interior surfaces of air ducts that are visible through grilles and louvers with one coat of flat black paint, to visible surfaces. Paint dampers exposed behind louvers and grilles to match face panels.

    F. Paint exposed conduit and electrical equipment occurring in finished areas.

    G. Paint both sides and edges of plywood backboards for electrical and telephone equipment before installing equipment.

    H. Color code equipment, piping, conduit, and exposed duct work in accordance with requirements indicated and color schedule. Color band and identify with flow arrows names and numbering.

    I. Reinstall electrical cover plates, hardware, light fixture trim, escutcheons and fittings removed prior to finishing.

    3.05 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Perform field inspection and testing under provisions of Section 01 40 00.

    B. Test questionable coated areas as directed.

    3.06 CLEANING

    A. Clean work under provisions of Section 01 77 00.

    B. Collect waste material which may constitute a fire hazard, place in closed metal containers and remove daily from site.

    3.07 SAFETY REQUIREMENTS A. For inflammable paints: Provide at least 200 m of air ventilation per kilo of solvent to

    maintain an atmosphere (vapor concentration) below 10% of the LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) to reduce concentration of solvents and prevent ignition/explosion.

    B. Wear gloves for prevention of skin irritation.

    C. Wear dust mask with in-built filter cartridge.

    D. Wear fresh air mask/respirator which is fed with clean air at a positive pressure and has a good facial fit, whenever the toxicity of paints is high and natural ventilation is not adequate and in confined spaces.

    E. Wear protective eyeglasses, keep skin covered, provide good ventilation, handle empty containers with care, avoid contamination and wash hands thoroughly.

    F. Use flame proof lighting and spark proof tools. Electrical and non-electrical equipment must be adequately earthed to ensure mitigation of static electric change.

    G. Wear anti-static footwear while painting.

    H. Follow detailed manufacturers safety instructions for each product.

    3.08 SCHEDULE - EXTERIOR SURFACES

    A. Steel - Unprimed:

    1. One coat of two component polyamide cured marine grade epoxy primer, (blast clean substrate for immersion exposures).

    2. Two coats of two component polyurethane, isocyanate cured acrylic finish). B. Steel - Shop Primed with Epoxy Primer:

    1. Spot repair damaged areas with epoxy resin based anti-corrosive primer for steel.

    2. Two coats of two component polyurethane, isocyanate cured acrylic finish with high ultra-violet resistance.

    C. Steel - Galvanized:

    1. One coat of two component polyamide cured marine grade epoxy primer with high corrosion resistance.

    2. Two coats of two component polyurethane, isocyanate cured acrylic finish with high ultra violet resistance, high gloss.

    D. Aluminum - Mill Finish:

    1. One coat of two component polyamide cured epoxy primer.

    2. Two coats of two component polyurethane, isocyanate cured acrylic finish with high ultra-violet resistance.

    3.09 SCHEDULE - INTERIOR SURFACES

    A. Concrete, Concrete Block, Cement Plaster:

    1. One coat of alkyd primer sealer.

    2. One coat of undercoat.

    3. Two coats of washable alkyd emulsion paint.

    B. Steel - Unprimed:

    1. One coat of alkyd primer.

    2. One coat of undercoat.

    3. Two coats of alkyd enamel, gloss. semi-gloss.

    C. Steel - Primed:

    1. Touch-up with alkyd primer.

    2. One coat of undercoat.

    3. Two coats of alkyd enamel, semi-gloss.

    D. Steel - Galvanized:

    1. One coat galvanize primer.

    2. One coat of undercoat.

    3. Two coats of alkyd enamel, semi-gloss.
