    B. Vacuum clean surfaces and damp clean.

    3.03 INSTALLATION, GENERAL

    A. Tile Installation Standards: Comply with applicable parts of ANSI 108 series of tile installation standards included under American National Standard Specifications for the Installation of Ceramic Tile.

    B. Installation Guidelines: TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation; comply with TCA installation methods indicated or, if not otherwise indicated, as applicable to installation conditions shown in British Ceramic Tile Council recommendations.

    C. Lay out tile so sizes less than 1/2 size are reduced to a minimum. Staggered joints are not permitted unless otherwise indicated.

    D. Comply with TCA Standard Installation Specifications A108.1 through A108.10 and the TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation, except as modified herein.

    E. Set individual tiles larger than 200 mm x 200 mm into setting material, taking care to maintain accurate joint alignment and spacing. Set tile to obtain 100 % contact between back of tile and setting material. Scribe and cut tile as necessary around obstructions to produce closely fitted, neat joints of uniform width throughout the installation.

    F. Apply sand/cement screeds to falls to all areas to take tiled flooring to the level required for bedding. Screeds shall be poured on waterproofing membrane which shall be carried up walls and fittings and flashed up penetrations to top of skirting level.

    G. Setting bed mortars, adhesives and grouts shall be of the types specified herein for the various uses. Set tile flush with adjoining units, level, true and plumb and to falls to floor drains. Grout shall be struck or tooled to the depth of the cushion. Grout in tile floors shall be flush with the surface. Remove excess grout before it has set. Install plant-mixed grout in strict accordance with the printed directions of approved manufacturer.

    H. Use approved spacing gauges or other devices to obtain joints of a uniform width for wall and floor tile.

    I. Replace broken, cracked, marred or otherwise defective tile or base before the setting material has set. Furnish and install corners, coves, angles or other trim shapes. Tile shall fit neatly around openings. Cutting, as far as practicable, shall be done by power saws. Cut edges shall be smooth, straight and free from chips. File hand-cut tiles or grind smooth on the cut edge.

    J. Grouting of joints shall be done on the same day that tile is set.

    K. Grounds, door bucks, saddles, plugs, supports and connections for mechanical or electrical work and fittings shall be in place and pipe chases and other openings shall have been properly closed before the application of tile mortar or adhesives.

    L. Waterproofing, Flashing and Cove Treatment: Where vertical surfaces, including pipes, drains, walls, etc. join concrete slabs, integral flashings shall be made by coating both the

vertical and horizontal surfaces not less than 100 mm up and out from the junction. Allow to set and recoat with membrane. Treat metal flashing rings, collars, drains, etc. in the same manner. Where an isolation joint exists, follow procedures as above, and carry through as an expansion joint. Recoat as above.

    M. In shower rooms, apply membrane to walls to a height of 2.1 m from finished floor level.

    N. Joints and Cracks: Fill and treat joints as required by waterproofing manufacturer.

    O. Priming: Prime as required by waterproofing manufacturer. Priming shall be applied over rough or porous broom finished concrete, etc., and on unpainted or unprimed metal.

    P. Metal Surfaces: Apply primer appropriate for use on metal surfaces.

    Q. Extend tile work into recesses and under or behind equipment and fixtures, to form a complete covering without interruptions, except as otherwise shown. Terminate work neatly at obstructions, edges and corners without disrupting pattern or joint alignments.

    R. Accurately form intersections and returns. Perform cutting and drilling of tile without marring visible surfaces. Carefully grind cut edges of tile abutting trim, finish or build-in items for straight aligned joints. Fit tile closely to electrical outlets, piping, fixtures and other penetrations so that plates, collars or covers overlap tile.

    S. Jointing Pattern: Unless otherwise shown, lay tile in grid pattern. Align joints when adjoining tiles on floor, base, walls and trim are same size. Layout tile work and center tile fields in both directions in each space or on each wall area. Adjust to minimize tile cutting. Provide uniform joint width, unless otherwise shown.

    T. Expansion Joints: Locate expansion joints and other sealant filled joints, including control, contraction and isolation joints, where indicated, or if not indicated, at spacings and locations recommended in TCA "Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation" and approved by the Engineer. Prepare joints and apply sealants to comply with requirements of referenced standards and sealant manufacturer.

    U. Grout tile to comply with referenced installation standards, using grout materials indicated. Mix and install proprietary components to comply with grout manufacturer's directions.

    V. Finished Appearance: Ensure that entire surfaces appear consistent in colour, tone, pattern and jointing upon completed installation. Replace any tiles that do not match the surrounding area.

    W. Repair/redo defective tiling work as directed by the Engineer.
