Every single Rotary year we attend membershipdevelopment seminars. We come up with attractiveways of inviting other professionals into our fold andyet, every single year as well, we lose almost the same numberofthosewerecruited.ThereisnoquestionthatwedoagoodjobinvitingpeopleintojoiningRotary, butwe cannot say the same about keeping them

Rotary clubs are just like business enterprises trying to sell its products to potential customers. The basicreason to buy is if a product addresses a need or a desire In our Rotary clubs, do we address our members’ needs and desires? Are our products, in this case our fellowship and community service projects, exactlywhat our customers want to buy?

Ifacustomerfindswhatheorsheneedsordesiresinaproduct, thatproductsuddenlyacquirestremendousvalue. There is a fit between product and customer.Comparatively, ifaRotarian, potentialorregular, findswhat he or she needs or desires in a Rotary club, then thereisaperfectfit.Thegreaterthevalue,thebetterthefit,andviceversa.

Perhaps 95 percent of club activities are in twoareas As such, we can say that they are, basically, the two products we offer: meetings for fellowship andprojects for service

Weekly meetings

Meetings are a club’s weekly showcase. For thelongest time, we have been told to conduct clubmeetings under strict protocol, prescriptive rules andinflexibleregulations.Oftenitfeelsthatwecannotmoveanymorewithout violatinga rule. Thenweconstantlycomplainoflackofattendanceinourmeetings.

Itistimetoexamineourweeklymeetingsfromourcustomers’ point of view Is this what they might want, somethingthatwouldbeattractivetothem?

Itisalsotimetoexamineourweeklymeetingsfromourmembers’pointofview.Areourweeklymeetingsexcitingenoughforustoattendthemweekafterweek?Do we give chance to everybody to be part of the programs and activities and give everyone a sense ofbelonging?

Good news from Pakistan regarding polio innoculations!!PPRonRonNethercuttPastROTIChairD3790InternationalServiceDirectorandDICORC Mabalacat Angeles City, Philippines

Todaywasagreatdayintheglobalinitiativetoendpolio forever. For thefirsttime in threeyears,32,641children living in the Tirah Valley (near the Pakistan/Afghanistanborder),receivedlife-savingpoliovaccinesand protection against other vaccine-preventablediseases like measles

Thisnewsisexcitingbecause:

• A major step to protect all children in the world from polio is ensuring that vaccinators in the last three countries where polio has never been stopped can reach children who have been persistently missed due to political instability, conflictormisinformation.

• For more than 3,800 of these children this is the firsttimetheyhaveeverreceivedthepentavalentvaccine(protectionagainstdiphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitisBandHiB),puttingthemonthe path toward a healthy and productive life.Another 11,000+ children received the measles vaccine, demonstratingthebroaderbenefitsofthepolioeradicationeffort.

The prime minister’s top polio eradication officialShahnaz Wazir Ali was quoted as saying, “It is a bigbreakthrough as Tirah was the most difficult area toaccessforvaccination.”

• Pakistan is one of the three remaining countries where polio transmission has never been stopped, along with Nigeria and Afghanistan

• Pakistanhashad29casesofpoliothisyear13ofwhich are from this region While cases of polio nearly doubled in 2011, remarkable progress has been made this year and as a result new polio cases are down by almost 2/3 compared to thistimelastyear.

The heroes:

• More than one hundred vaccinator heroes supported by troops for security talked to local elders and community leaders to inform them of thebenefitsofthepoliovaccinationsandclearanyhesitationstheymayhavehad.

Clubmeetingsneednotbeexpensivetobeexciting.WesimplyneedtoofferwhatourRotarianswant.Startby examining the demographics and composition ofpresent members and find out what will make themenjoyourmeetings.

In 1905 therewere four peoplewho got togetherbecause they simply wanted to have someone they can talk and relate to We should not forget this original purpose of Rotary and start engaging our Rotarians with flexible and innovative meeting formats. To theoft-asked question, what is a quality Rotarian, myanswerisalways:“AqualityRotarianisaRotarianthatishavingfun.”Funmeetingswillcutacrossage,gender,andprofession.Itwillhavegreatvaluebecausefunfitseveryone’s needs

Community Service Projects

Our other showcase is our community service projects, greatopportunitiestorallyandmotivatetheheartsofcurrentandpotentialRotarians.

In Rotary, we have unarguably done countless projects serving the needs of all sectors of our community We might just even be the best provider in the Philippines because of the sheer magnitude of our network

Whichbringstotheforetwoquestions:1)Havewemadeasignificantdifferencetothecommunitythatweserve?2)Arewestilleagertoforkoutanextrapesotosustainsomanyprojectsorarewealreadyexperiencingdonor’sfatigue?

Itisimperativetofocusandplancommunityserviceprojectstobemoreefficientandtakeintoconsiderationsustainability.Webecomemoremotivatedifweseethechanges in the lives of the people we help

Planning is just as important as implementation.Have we involved all our Rotarians in our service projects? Being part of the success of any endeavor is a reward by itself When a Rotarian sees this value, giving morecanbeeasilymotivated.

If you always do what you you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got Because of the same programs that we do again and again we get the same results again and again I challenge all Rotarians to innovate and look beyond the obvious The changes we want are right in front of us Focus internally and see how weekly meetings and community serviceprojects can be innovated Create value for current and future Rotarians. Find what fits their needs. Alwaysaim to improve our products to make them relevant to the people we target to buy into our Rotary Clubs Remember:“Thegreaterthefit, thegreaterthevalue.”
