There are birds chirping brightly in the trees. The branches are covered in tiny pink buds. Occasionally, we can step outside without needing a jacket. The sun is actually enough to keep us warm. The kids are running around outside until the sun goes down instead of glued to the TV – or doing their homework. Our noses are starting to get stuffy. Our eyes are red and watery. Spring is here!

This time is always a mixture of emotions for many of us. Like anything, there are ups and downs, and we could argue them into the winter if we really wanted to. But I want to talk about one thing that really isn’t debatable: Spring represents a time of change and growth. The whole world around us is opening up, coming awake, breathing with new life.

What better time for us to do the same?

I know you’ve thought about it. Maybe you saw a picture of a woman in a bikini and thought, “I’d really love to look like that this summer.” Maybe you saw your friend with a new pixie haircut and thought you could totally pull it off, too. Maybe you saw a jacket in a window that you knew would look fabulous on you. Maybe you found a great-looking recipe for some exotic dish that you wanted to try.

But I bet you talked yourself out of the change. You thought, “Oh, I don’t really have time to go to the gym or plan healthy meals.” You touched your long hair and thought it would be too scary to cut it all off. You figured the jacket was too expensive anyway, and you don’t really need it. You told yourself your husband and the kids probably wouldn’t like the “weird” food and decided to make chicken fingers instead.

Changeby Katherine Kehoe

You Go Girl

Guess what? We’ve all done it! Change can be one of the most daunting and terrifying things out there. We take the same steps inside our comfort zones for so long, we’ve actually worn ourselves these little moats that are really hard to climb out of. But it’s definitely not impossible, even if it might take a little work.

So maybe the new ground might feel different under our feet, and might take some getting used to. Maybe waking up half an hour earlier to get to the gym in the mornings would be jarring and your body would be tired. Maybe the cold breeze on the back of your neck might feel weird with the short hair. Maybe buying the jacket would mean buckling down in other areas. Maybe the food would turn out gross and you wouldn’t wind up eating it.

But you know what? Maybe you’d love it. Maybe you’d feel amazing. Maybe you’d look spectacular. Maybe

it would be the most delicious food you’ve ever tried. And if you never took the risk,

how would you know?

Here’s my challenge to you for the spring months, ladies: pick one thing

you want to change. The worst that happens is you hate it and you change it back. But doesn’t it sound tempting to make like a flower and grow?

Parental GuidanceWhy Can’t We be Friends?By Maureen Whelan

It has often been said that a parent can only be as happy as their least happy child. This may be what drives parents to turn a blind eye to what is right, for the sake of making their own children happy. Yet, this type of happiness for their children is short lived, because the reality will set in. Happiness can’t be given to someone else, it must be cultivated in each person individually. I’ve been doing a great deal of reading on happiness recently, and I’ve found one common thread. Children are happiest when they experience a meaningful connectedness to people in their daily lives. This includes family, siblings, neighbors and most importantly, peers.Unfortunately, our current modern world tends to be one of electronic connectedness, and this is trickling down to our children. So while Facebook can be great tool for adults to keep in touch with friends from afar, it is not a suitable replacement for individuals who have not established mature friendships. There is no “virtual reality” for friendship. Childhood social-emotional disorders are on the rise. Could it be because our children are lacking a meaningful connectedness? As parents, there is much we can do to support the skills needed for friendships. The first step is taking some time to understand the develop-mental progression of friendships, and how are children fit into this schematic. Take into account your own friends, both casual and close, and the roles they play. Many of us have the “Good-time Charlie” friend who is always up for a few laughs, and a night out. This may not be the same person you seek comfort or parenting advice from, but they are a valuable friend none-the-less. Help your child develop the skills needed to cultivate friendships, and establish common bonds. Your child will have people in his life that fill similar roles of comedian, teammate, school friend, and Mine Craft buddy, each friend different, but equally important. Friendships and child development both have a natural progression. It is important to realize where your child falls on the continuum and know what skills can be developed. Stage 1: Friends are moment to moment. Early childhood friends will be self-serving. Your child may

reject this friend if they don’t get things “their way”. This is normal, but continue to talk to your child about how to share toys, ideas, space and attention. At this stage keep playtime with peers limited, provide some structure, and a neutral territory such as a park will promote an even exchange. If your child has a special toy, allow him to put it away for safe keeping while the friend is over. Keep play interactions short to foster success.

Stage 2: This is still somewhat egocentric but children move past the moment-to- moment interactions. Your child will still need to derive some benefit from the relationship. He may even put up with a peer who is unkind for the self-serving goal of having a “friend”. Talk to your child about the qualities that are found in a good friend and help him set healthy boundaries with his peers.

Stage 3: Your child will begin to understand someone else’s perspective, but is still very concerned with things being even. The “I invited her so she should invite me..” stage. They tend to have a strong idea of right and wrong, but will be confused on how to act on this. Children will work hard to fit in by creating sameness among the peer group. Continue to help your child focus on how it feels to be kind to others. Teach them the art of giving and accepting compliments graciously, as this is becomes a valuable skill at this stage. Make sure they understand that honesty should be expressed with kindness, and continue to reinforce boundaries.

Stage 4: Friends begin sharing without looking for something in return. They may develop deeper friendships with a few people sharing inner thoughts and feelings. There is also a greater risk for emotional hurt if there is a falling out or betrayal of trust. Continue to remind your child that even good friends disagree, and help them to take some space to gain insight into their own actions. Continue to develop a variety of connections from various interests so that one friendship doesn’t carry the weight of the world.

Stage 5: Friends will start to appreciate the differences between their friends and accept these without condition. These friendships withstand life changes, distance and others entering and exiting the circle of friends. This is the level of friendship many adults have with old childhood friends. This type of friendship is special, and should be cherished!

Most of all, model the behavior you wish to develop in your child. This means making time for friends, sharing memories and stories of your own childhood friendships, avoiding gossiping, and most of all, being a good friend.

“The only way

to have a friend

is to be one.”

10 Ways to Prevent Summer Sports Injuries

Dr. Tony Garrow & Dr. Susan Nemiroff

It’s almost summertime… time for lots of outdoor sports and family fun! But, with the increase in outdoor activities and the heat can come an increase in sports-related injuries. The Jersey Shore Wellness Center gives the following quick tips to keep your summer fun and healthy, and keep you and your kids on top of your game.

1. WARM UP IN THE HEAT: When participating in sports, make sure you warm up properly. Take a quick 5-10 minute walk/jog to get that blood flowing and joints warm.

2. STRETCH YOUR LIMITS: Lightly stretch before activity to add flexibility to your muscles and ligaments. Focus on stretching your legs and back the most.

3. HYDRATE: Since the majority of the human body is made up of H2O, be sure to drink plenty of water or fitness drink. In the heat you get dehydrated much faster, which greatly increases your chance for injury.

4. COOL DOWN: A 5- to 10-minute post-exercise cool down followed by a deep stretch will help return your body back to its resting state and keep you less sore.

5. PRACTICE: Practice proper form in any of the activities you perform. Improper movements can increase injury.

6. TAPE FOR STABILITY: Use supports or exercise tape if necessary to support your joints and provide proper stability.

7. MAKE EXERCISE PART OF DAILY ROUTINE: Stop trying to be a weekend warrior! Most injuries occur because people don’t participate regularly, and then just push too hard. Exercise everyday, even if for just 20 minutes.

8. GET YOUR Zssssssssss: Proper rest is more important than you think. 8-10 hours of sleep a night will supply your body with the proper time it needs to repair any injuries.

9. GET THE RIGHT GEAR: Wear the proper equipment for your sport or activity, including good shoes, helmets, pads, etc.

10. ICE: Ice, ice, ice after exercise if you are sore or injured. Ice will decrease any inflammation that may be occurring at the site of injury or the overused joints. If the soreness continues for more than a few days, see your doctor of chiropractic.

Call now to get a free check up and prevent upcoming exercise related injuries!

Money Matters

Identity theft targeting baby boomers is on the rise, as cyber criminals focus their efforts on the massive number of well-funded retirement nest eggs and clean credit histories this generation of Americans has spent years building. Identity fraud is on the rise, and baby boomers heading toward retirement are particularly vulnerable. In 2014, the Federal Trade Commission reported that cases of identity fraud targeting adults age 50 and older are on the rise, accounting for 37 percent of ID theft complaints reported in 2013.Large-scale data breaches among high profile retailers like Target and Neiman Marcus have focused attention on the risks consumers face keeping their personal information secure. Whether they are targeted online, through snail mail, by strangers or by trusted caregivers, the 10,000 baby boomers streaming into retirement every day are particularly appealing to identity thieves who view each one as nest egg waiting to be looted.Boomers are besieged by criminals operating schemes to swindle them out of their bank information, tax refunds, Medicare benefits and retirement savings, and many don’t realize it. ID thieves have increasingly sophisticat-ed ways of stealing personal information and using it to open new credit card accounts, take out loans, drain existing bank accounts and even get driver’s licenses issued in the victim’s name. By the time many victims realize anything is amiss, it is already too late.Despite the fact that most baby boomers are generally more tech savvy than older seniors, they can be susceptible to scams for a number of reasons. Age-related issues like memory lapses and more serious condi-tions such as dementia can render a person less likely to check credit reports and bank accounts regularly for unauthorized use. Equally troubling is the fact that baby boomers grew up in the 1950s and 60s, a time when they were more than likely raised to be polite, which may make some reluctant to question the motives of a suspected scammer. Most aging Americans who have spent a lifetime building good credit and saving for retirement have a lot to lose, and identity thieves know it. Today’s scammers are aiming for baby boomer retirement nest eggs and clean credit histories that can be exploited quickly and thoroughly.Independent wealth management advisor William Skillender says the vulnerability of aging consumers to cyber crimes including identity theft should be cause for concern among baby boomers, their financial advisors, and even family members who suspect a loved one might be at risk.“We find that a number of boomer generation retirees may consid-er themselves to be immune to cyber crimes, since they have been conducting financial business online for years and have so far avoided any major breaches to their accounts,” he says.

“But considering the overwhelming data that shows just how targeted boomers are by increasingly sophisticated criminals, even the most aloof individual can be taken advantage of under the right circumstances.”Although scams against the elderly (age 70 and older) are still a prob-lem, baby boomers are not likely to be taken by the same old-fashioned strategies involving sweepstakes scams, or the Grandparent hoax in which thieves call an elderly person and pose as their grandchild in need of financial help. In fact, memory limitations and disorientation common in advanced age, combined with isolation and loneliness makes many elderly people much more vulnerable to the old-school scams that most people know to avoid. But boomers are in a different situation. Their awareness of antiquated schemes give many a false sense of security since they know to look out for obvious cons, but they pay too little attention to the pervasive nature of new, sophisticated threats that surface daily—most prevalently those hidden in innocent-looking emails.Skillender, like a growing number of retirement advisors nationwide, is doing his part to heighten awareness of the real threat identity theft poses to baby boomers’ financial well being by conducting educational workshops at local libraries and community centers in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. For most baby boomers, credit-monitoring services, computer security software and even identity theft insurance are already familiar tools for maintaining cyber security. It is important to note that retiree’s nest eggs are at a heightened risk of theft after age 50, and cyber thieves are relentless when it comes to breaching any available weakness in security measures. A professional retirement advisor can provide addition-al information and guidance on the best ways to protect retirement funds from cyber criminals.

What got you to take the leap in starting your own business? Anytime Fitness owner-Janice Lauria- I wanted to move. I refused to move to an area that didn’t have an accessible gym, so I decided to start my own. Before Anytime Fitness, I was in the real estate business for 18 years.

Was Anytime Fitness your first business? Yes. But, real estate is kind of like having your own business. The difference is that, in real estate you can find someone that could help you solve a problem. When you own your own business, you have tofigure it out yourself. It was a complete life change for me and family in general. People say that in the beginning, it’s tough. But it’s still tough. That being said, I wouldn’t change it for a minute!

How does the saying, “Over my dead body” apply to this business? No one will ever take away my business. I have had various challenges over the years coming against the business. But, nothing will stop me or my drive in this business.

How is Anytime Fitness trending in America?I think as whole, they push health and fitness with it, and that comes with the exercise. That keep us trending very positively. Plus, access..that is the key! Business travelers, vacationers, odd work schedules, busy people, can still work out….whenever they see fit. Year after year, Anytime Fitness has been one of the fastest growing franchises in the country.

What would you like to say to propective clients looking to find “THEIR” home in the work out scene? If you are looking for more personalization, smaller, motivating, and unimtimidating, then this is the place to be.

Any new features or work out equipment?Changes are coming….look for exciting changes with new classes and new equipment.

All Business

As we continue the series of articles to “Get Your House in Order,” let’s discuss the home-based business, which many are motivated to start. With low overhead and start-up costs an entrepreneur can build a business and grow into a larger office. You have no commute and can continue to raise your family or work your full-time job. Best of all, starting your own business can give you an outlet for your talents – while potentially creating a launching point to transition from your job as your own business grows. And…most times, you can stay in your pajamas! While it is a wonderful idea, doing so is fraught with dangers and difficulties:Registration You still must register your business (depending on the type of entity chosen – sole proprietorship, LLC…). If you decide to open a business as a sole proprietor – be aware any suit against the business is a suit against you, personally. Since your business is in your home, you expose your personal assets to loss. Not a great idea. Even forming an entity, like an LLC, won’t protect your personal assets because the “office” is your home. You will also need to obtain your tax identification number, open bank accounts…so, having a home-based business does not allow you to avoid these important steps.Community Rules If you rent an apartment or own a condo or co-op, your community probably has restrictions on operating a business out of your residence. Check the rules before you invest time and money - or get a surprise shut-down or notice of eviction.Zoning Every town is sectioned into “zones:” Business, Industrial (heavy, light), Residential, Mixed. These zones restrict the types of businesses that can operate in the area. The town will also have limitations on parking, traffic (like the presence of industrial vehicles), and signage. Visit your town’s build-ing department to learn more. And…by the way…don’t try to sneak around! Avoiding this step may result in fines – and having to close your business when it is doing well, resulting in bad public relations and a damper on your investment and effort! Permits and Licensing Many businesses require permits and licensing. Some businesses cannot operate out of a private residence – like real estate brokerages (or salons). Contractors must register. Electricians must be licensed. Chefs – even those selling baked goods sold at county fairs – must cook in a state-inspected kitchen. Last year, in fact, a bill was presented in New Jersey to allow home-based chefs to prepare certain baked goods at home without such a license. Sadly, the bill died in the senate committee – so, if you are selling your magic gluten-free treats you had better be making them in a state-inspected kitchen. If anything should happen (food poison-ing, for example), you will not only have potential lawsuits, but also you could be subject to statutory or criminal penalties. Get your required permits and licenses.Tax Deductions The IRS allows business deductions for the use of your home. You can take a percentage of your home expenses - mortgage, taxes, internet, utilities, security system – proportionate to the amount of space your business has in the home. However, your home office must be used exclusively for the business – you cannot share it with your spouse or use it for another purpose. Also, deductions for improvements to the space are tricky. This is an area requiring expert advice.Practicality The major problem with a home-based business is…it’s in your home. When I first started my law office, I operated out of my home – and it was a major mistake! Not only did I have my children and their friends passing through, and my dogs barking during important phone calls, but also I had family not realizing when I was “at work” and when I was “wife and mom.” Can you get the privacy you need? Is it quiet enough? Is it appropriate to meet clients or customers in your home? Having a business meeting in your kitchen is not always the best professional route…. Can you continue to fulfill your home-responsibilities while operating your business? Is your spouse on-board? These are important personal questions you really must answer before taking the plunge into any business.Focus and Discipline Do you have the focus required to work from home? Is the television too tempting? You kids are playing outside…and it’s so

warm out…and you can get to the work later…. Or friends are always dropping by or calling. Can you stay as focused on your business as you would be under the eyes of a watchful boss? This is very difficult to master and you should be honest with yourself before starting the venture. If surfing the internet and watching television is a constant distraction, you would be better served by renting a small office to differentiate between home and work.Insurance and Risk This is one area most people do not consider. As stated throughout this article, when operating a home-based business, you must consider the risk to which you expose your home and personal assets. The best route is to meet with your attorney and homeowner’s insurance provider. But be warned: Many residential insurance companies will not cover a business – and will cancel your homeowners if you are operating a business in your home. When I had the law office in my home, I had to change to a new provider who would cover my residence and my business. Better safe than sorry. Filing a claim for a fire or someone’s injury and having it denied because you failed to notify your insurer of the presence of a business can be costly and not worth the stealth. Funding Restrictions Many lenders will not offer funds to a home-based business. This is not surprising as you have not established your business enough to garner lender-confidence. Also…a lender that does offer funding to a home-based business owner will want equity in the business – typically, your home. This is not a great option. When you are ready to expand, make moving out of your home your first priority. If you find having a home-based business is not an option for you, consider renting meeting space or a satellite office space where you are provided a desk and a phone. Consider subletting a room from a friend who has an office. Many bakers, for example, sublet cooking space from restaurants. You can also look into incubator space: Public institutions, colleges, and non-profits offer space to budding business owners at reasonable rates. Some even come with a reception-ist! Check out “business incubator” online.

The Path to Happinessby Christy Schmidt

Coach Me Christy

“I’m never happy,” my new client looked around the office, then cast her eyes down to the tabletop. “Never. Nothing works. I go out with friends. I go to parties. I buy myself new clothes. I travel. It all fades.”This is something I hear from almost every client and, I suspect, it is the disease of our genera-tion. We have these expectations of what life is “supposed to be,” of what we are “supposed” to achieve. We look around wondering what we are doing wrong, holding onto little moments of joy that pass too quickly. And we ask: “Is this all there is?”Well…for the next few 08742 Living issues, we are going to discuss the science behind happi-ness. No astrological or flowy energy “secrets,” just sound science to help you achieve a happy state, every day, all the time. To really help you apply these concepts, I am going to present parts of my workshop, The Happiness Path right here! Think of it as a little gift from me to you!We can start by your answering which statement is true:1. Happiness is the result of reaching goals.2. Happiness is the precursor to

reaching goals. You might be surprised to learn that happiness is the precursor to reaching goals! Reaching a goal – getting the great job, buying your dream home, getting that new cell phone, getting in shape – all feel good, for the moment. But the happiness fades and we seek a new goal

for the rush of accomplishment – always leaving happiness in the future. Think about it: You so wanted “X” – and then you got it and sought the next thing to want. We are always searching for the thing that will “make us happy.” The science shows that working towards a goal provides lasting happiness (explaining why retirement can be so depressing…). The science also shows that our brains are literally hardwired to perform their best when they are positive – when we are already happy and in a positive state! I hear you: “Great. So I have to force myself to be happy? How the heck do I do that??? I don’t feel happy.”Glad you asked. In the next few articles, you will learn:• The Happiness Formula• How to Clean Up Past Pain – Grief,

Anger, Regret• How to Envision a Brighter Future and

Eliminate Self-Limiting Beliefs• How to Enjoy the Present by Mastering

Your Emotions• The Key to Your Personal Happiness• How to LIVE in The Zone

Happiness is a subjective state based upon how we feel about our own lives. It really is the mental construction or definition of our own activities – the way we define our reality. Anyone who has seen The Twilight Zone episode “Kick the Can” understands this concept. Science has shown that our interpretation creates our emotional experience. Our emotions do not create our experience – it’s the other way around – our experience creates our emotions! For illustration, try the following exercise:You enter a bank and about 30 people are there, including customers with their children, the tellers and the staff. A minute after you enter, a robber walks in and fires his weapon once before being subdued by a security guard. You are shot in the right arm.Are you lucky or unlucky? In next month’s Coach Me Christy article, we will discuss how your response sets the tone of your life. Like attendees of my workshop, The Happiness Path, I think you will be amazed at the positive changes completing these exercises can bring to your life! See you next month.Note: For those of you who cannot wait, call me to arrange The Happiness Path workshop at your office or home for you or you and a small group. In a few hours, you could redefine your life!

For the next four months I will be interning at Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. Located on 3000 acres, it is the largest animal sanctuary in the country. The energy there is unmatchable; a large group of people working toward a common goal of no more homeless pets. The sanctuary is home to horses, pigs, goats, bunnies, birds, cats, dogs, and even wild animals. Currently there are over three hundred dogs and about forty puppies.

The month of March I worked with the puppies in the quarantine area when they first arrive at the sanctuary. Even though they’re in good hands, seeing them pass through is heart wrenching. Puppies often have a higher chance of being adopted than adult dogs, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try and decrease the amount that end up in shelters in the first place.

There are a variety of different reasons why puppies come to shelters. They’re bought as presents for others, have health problems, are bought without knowledge of the huge commitment, are strays, are given up by families when moving, or taken out of unsafe conditions in pet shops or puppy mills. Despite their lovable faces and warm cuddly bodies, there are simply more puppies than homes available.

Spaying and neutering pets is one important step to decreasing overpopulation among dogs. Even if you do not plan to breed your dog, all it takes is one escape from your yard and another dog encounter to produce a litter of puppies. If cost is a concern, there are a number of low cost spay and neuter programs across the state. These organizations can also use donations or volunteers if you have either to spare.

Overpopulation is not the only concern regarding puppies in shelters. When left to fend for themselves at such a young age, puppies are at risk for many diseases. Shelters and rescues work hard to be as sanitary as possible, but no organization is perfect. Outside factors such as soil, bugs, and wild animals can transmit diseases. Young puppies have not had the chance to build up as strong of an immune system as older dogs. They also haven’t had as many vaccines, which often have to be administered in series with weeks in between. While some diseases in shelters are easier to treat, such as kennel cough, others like parvo, coccidia, and giardia can be life threatening.

Puppies are happiest and healthiest in loving homes. To lower the number of home-less pups, spay and neuter dogs. Less puppies in shelters can help lower the spread of life-threatening diseases, and give the ones that are in shelters a better chance of adoption. One less puppy in a shelter gives another puppy or dog a second chance at life.

Active play is an essential part of healthy child development, contribut-ing to a child’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being. For children with special needs, the benefits of play are even more pronounced and can even be life-changing. Play helps bridge learning gaps caused by developmental delays and disabilities, directly addressing many common deficits and improving executive level brain functioning. Unfortunately, children with special needs may face barriers to active play, which is why adapted play materials are so crucial in special needs environments. Thanks to the efforts of one Point Pleasant Borough High School student, the children enrolled in Ocean Road Elementary School’s preschool disabled program now have access to a wide selection of adapted active play materials and equipment available for their daily use. Point Borough senior Matt Gerrity recently donated to the class a variety of play equipment he constructed as part of the service project requirements he completed to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, the Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank attainable. The journey for a Boy Scout to become an Eagle Scout is arduous one, in which the requirements take years to fulfill. Only a small percentage of Boy Scouts –historically about two percent - ever become Eagle Scouts. To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, a Boy Scout must first progress through six Scouting ranks, earning a minimum of 21 merit badges. He must demonstrate service, and leadership. And finally, he must complete an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages.Matt, age 17, pondered the service project he would pursue to earn the Eagle Scout rank, knowing he wanted to do something that helped children and confident his project should benefit his alma mater, Ocean Road Elementary School. It wasn’t until a driving lesson, taken in the spring of his junior year that Matt settled on a project after a driving lesson took a fortuitous turn as a result of a conversation he had with his driving instructor, Buddy Carr, an Ocean Road School physical education teacher. During the lesson, Mr. Carr mentioned that he wished the school had adapted physical education equipment for use by the three- and four- year –old students in Ocean Road’s preschool disabled class.“I set up a meeting with [school principal] Mrs. Buck in May,” Matt said. “She liked the idea so I got to work researching what I wanted to do for the students.”For his initial concept, Matt drew upon the results of his research along with his personal experiences working with special needs children as a summer camp counselor with the Point Pleasant Rec Center and with his Scout Troop at the Elks’ special needs picnic.“I used the same ideas for the games and activities used at the picnics and the Rec Center and expanded upon them,” he said.Once his plans began to take shape, Matt sought the financial means to make his plans a reality. He spent the summer and early fall fundraising for his project, holding car washes and clothing drives and soliciting donations from friends, family and local businesses, ultimately collecting money and supplies equaling about $1400.Although his project plans were fairly well established, it wasn’t until Matt visited the preschool classroom this past October and met with the students who would benefit from his work, that everything came together.

“I got to learn about the students and what their challenges were,” said Matt. “I tried to incorporate their needs into the design of the games.”With his plans finalized and the funding acquired, Matt got to work, spending the winter months working after school and on weekends to complete the project.

On Thursday, March 3, Matt along with his parents Steve and Wanda Gerrity delivered to the school the fruits of Matt’s labor, which included bean bag and ring tosses, a plinko game, kerplunk, and a ball maze as well as two activity tables featuring a LEGO-ready top with two bins of LEGOs and a magnetic board with assorted magnets and more. Ocean Road Principal Sheila Buck watched in shock as the Gerrity’s unloaded the equipment from their cars, she said, “This is beyond my wildest dreams.“When we first met, I had hoped that Matt might be able to build some equipment that would allow the students who are unable to use the outdoor play equipment to play and participate regardless of individual ability,” she said. “I had hoped that the items he built would support and

enhance the development of the students gross motor skills. These items will do that and more.”Mrs. Buck said the equipment would be used for inside recess and because everything was treated for outdoor use, it will be used for outdoor play as well as at the preschool class’s Tournament of Champions Field Day.“I think we can even put some of the equipment in the Occupational Therapy room to use as a motivational tool to support positive behavior,” she said.

Although Mrs. Buck, Assistant Principal Lauren Rohmeyer and Mr. Carr were all extremely impressed with Matt’s work, the true test came when preschool teacher Jill Vitale brought her students to try everything out. The anticipation was palpable as the preschoolers took in the treasures that awaited them. Within seconds though, their anticipation turned to glee as the children began playing with their new toys.“It’s amazing,” Mrs. Vitale said of the equipment. “Everything is so

perfectly geared to this population of students. “Mrs. Vitale was impressed with Matt’s creativity and thoughtfulness, she said, “Matt accounted for everything, making both princess- and superhero- themed games to appeal to all of the students.“These games are great because they address so many skills,” she said. “While they’re playing and having fun the children are also gaining fine and gross motor skills, socialization skills and social planning skills. It’s fabulous and everyone can participate. We are so grateful to Matt, for what he’s done for our students.” But for Matt, the happy faces of the children playing were thanks enough. “This feels great,” said Matt as he watched the preschoolers enjoying their new games. “This is what I hoped for.”Matt is the second Gerrity to complete his Eagle Scout service project at Ocean Road School, following in the footsteps older brother Ryan, who built a nature path at the school.

In a little white room on a stage made of blue tape in Manasquan Recreation’s Annex building, a grizzly wild animal roars, a goofy superhero fails, and a TV news anchor gets unprofessional on camera.Jamie Mawn and Harry Harvey’s Shore Fun Improv began years ago as an extension of the acting class that Mr. Harvey teaches at the high school. This dynamic duo, who have over 40 combined years at Manasquan teaching English and English-adjacent classes, run workshops for acting and writing during the summer in this same building. Students of improv perform on-the-spot scenes and sketches based on various rules and games. For anyone who remembers what it’s like to be thirteen, you’ll know that it’s a daring enough act to stand in front of your peers and perform, but on Friday nights from 6-8 p.m., Mr. Mawn and Mr. Harvey equip kids to get up and perform without even know what they’re performing before they start.Despite the rules of the games, there are really no limitations for what can happen on the stage on any given night. A stage play’s set production may wow you and suck you immediately into the world of the play, but theater is truly magical when you witness the performer creating that world around them. The range of students in the classes is wide. As the website, shorefunimprov.com, states, “we’ve taught everyone - star athletes, shy kids that parents dragged to workshops, talented actors, class clowns, and those daring individuals who just wanted to try something different.”As with the students, and with the world they create in their heads, the benefits of improv are far-reaching and fantastic. Students cite interacting with people they wouldn’t otherwise, gaining public

speaking skills, writing essays, overcoming anxiety, and connecting to people by becoming better listeners as some of the aspects of their lives that have been changed since they started improv. Two of the veterans of the class, Ryan Coulson and Miguel Garcia, have been learning and performing improv in Manasquan for almost a decade. When I asked Ryan, Miguel, and the rest of the class what they like about improv, it seemed like they could have went on for hours.

“I cried when I first came here [in 5th grade],” Ryan, who is now a stand-out performer whether in an empty room or for a few thousand people in MHS’s Jack Nicholson Theatre, told me after a class last month.“I have anxiety, and now I know how to talk to people without being judged, because here it’s a judgement-free zone, so it’s like practice for real life,” said Miranda Schindler, a student who wrote the acrostic poem that serves as the Shore Fun Improv website’s mission statement.Harvey and Mawn’s Manasquan improvisational empire runs the gamut from these classes; to Mr. Harvey’s MHS class; to a series of summer shows; to their crown jewel, the Improv For Ron show. The show, held annually at the high school, is named after MHS alumni Ron Kubik. Ron took Mr. Harvey’s acting class and become a US Army Ranger after graduation, before giving his life in Afghanistan and earning the military’s third highest honor, the Silver Star, for saving the lives of 5 Rangers, 5 Afghan soldiers, and 19 Afghani women and children. The show raises money for a scholarship in Ron’s name. This year’s show is scheduled for May 21 from 7:30-9 p.m. More information about the show, about classes, and about improv in general can be found on their website, shorefunimprov.com.

Are we doing enough to protect our personal information? Is there anyone looking out for us, or is it just a helpless battle in this age of technology? This may not be how you would expect a book review to begin, and neither would I, but “The Broken Window” by Jeffrey Deaver demands that we ponder these questions.I randomly grabbed this novel, and the jacket description piqued my interest. This is the eighth book in a series of now twelve Lincoln Rhyme novels, but the series doesn’t need to be read in order. This book does well as a standalone, and does not give away plots from the previous stories. I recall the character of Lincoln Rhyme as portrayed by Denzel Washington in the motion picture The Bone Collector, which is the title of the first book in the series. Rhyme was a brilliant crime scene technician for the N.Y.P.D., when he was seriously injured on a crime scene and lost the use of all his extremities. He battled, and continues to battle his mental demons, and has now become a world-renowned forensic detective.“The Broken Window” begins with Rhyme’s cousin and once best friend, Arthur Rhyme, being charged with a gruesome murder. When Lincoln is presented with the evidence, the case against Arthur seems so airtight that he is reluctant to ruffle the feathers of the powers that be, in order to take a closer look for the sake of a family member to whom he no longer speaks. Slowly, he begins to notice that the evidence is too strong, and possibly planted in an effort to frame his cousin. With the help of his partner (and lover) Amelia Sachs, they begin to discover more cases where people convicted of rape and murder may have had “too much” evidence against them. As the patterns emerge, Rhyme and Sachs are led to believe that these people are innocent, including his cousin, and that the real suspect is still out there, hunting for prey.

“The Eagle Scout projects completed by Ryan and Matt Gerrity have demonstrated the Scouting ideals of service and leadership,” said Superintendent of Schools Vincent S. Smith. “Their commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others will inspire generations of Ocean Road Elementary School students.“On behalf of the Point Pleasant Borough School District, I’d like to extend my gratitude to the Gerrity family for their continued support of our schools,” he said.Visit www.pointpleasant.k12.nj.us to learn more about Point Pleasant Borough Schools.

The hunter, codenamed 522 for the May 22nd murder date, is gathering information on his prey using the dark side of the information age. He is using personal information sourced from a data mining company in order to know every detail about his intended victims, as well as the poor soul that he intends to frame for the crime. Rhyme and Sachs begin to catch on, and the plot really takes off. 522 knows he is being boxed in, but rather than give up

or lay low, he is driven by his perverted desires, and turns the tables on the detectives, making their lives increasingly more

miserable. Knowledge is power in this story, and 522 has all the knowledge he needs at his fingertips. However, with Sachs doing the legwork and Rhyme doing the theorizing, they will not be outdone.

I must admit, Jeffrey Deaver did a great job keeping me guessing, and I was sur-prised by the identity of the killer. Deaver also did a great job of incorporating the subplots, such as Arthur and Lincoln Rhyme’s broken relationship, as well as the potential for major N.Y.P.D. fallout for convicting many innocent people.

As the story raced to the end, I often felt my heart racing as well, not only from the fast-paced twists and turns, but also from the very real terror of data mining, and how much of our personal freedoms are at stake for the sake of consumerism. The technology written about in this book from 2008 is out there and in full use. I worry how much further we’ve progressed in the past eight years. Are we safer? Are we more vulnerable?

Although I did not care for the spreadsheet-type evidence lists that kept popping up, or the fate of Amelia Sach’s seemingly pristine hot rod 1969 Camaro SS, Jeffrey Deaver created a page-turner in “The Broken Window”. I will be seeking out and reading more novels in the Lincoln Rhyme series, including the latest release, “The Steel Kiss”. In the meantime, “The Broken Window” is available at the Point Pleasant Beach, and Point Pleasant Boro branches of the Ocean County Library.

“The Broken Window” is published by Simon and Schuster, 2008.

The Power of Positive ThinkingGrowing Your Rootsby Allison Feehan, Owner of Integrative Healing and Wellness

Each month of the year has a long list of which ‘awareness’ is recog-nized whether it is for health, holidays, birthdays, or a combination of these. We are all advocates for a great cause in awareness to some degree, especially a cause for something powerful that could potentially be life changing for another. We ensure proper attention to that particular awareness but for our everyday lives we forget about that daily awareness within ourselves. We may briefly become aware of what we put in your mouth, how long we are on your cell phone for, or how much or how little we exercised that day. We receive 400 billion bits of information each second and 98% of our 60,000 thoughts are repeats from the day before. We need to become more aware of our thoughts and what we tell ourselves because how many positive ones are in that lot of 60,000? Our root chakra or Muladhara in Sanskrit meaning ‘root support’, located at the base of our spine is our grounding for such awareness. Chakra means “wheel”; a vortex of vibration, light, and energy. A chakra’s primary function is to maximize the physical body and bring about the development of our consciousness. Each chakra vibrates at a specific vibratory note, has an associated color to it, and has emotional, physical, and mental functions or malfunctions associated with them. With its associated color of red, the root chakra holds Yang energy which is your masculine energy and it vibrates at a C tonal note. So if you are feeling “out of tune” I would definitely start at the root which connects us to Mother Earth herself. Some malfunctions that encom-pass the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of the body in this chakra are; lack of visibility, security or survival issues, ‘spaciness’, food/health issues, un-grounded-ness. You may notice some issues

in your knees, hips, spine, legs, your trust, contentedness, inability to let-go, or a lacking thereof. I’ve been practicing Reiki for so long that I’ve noticed a pattern of clients that do not have a root chakra in balance. They complain of anxiety, lack of sleep, no self-confidence in their path forward in life, etc. Where does all that energy go if it isn’t in the root? You guessed it! It sits up in the third-eye and crown chakra. This is where our consciousness and thoughts are. This leads to repeat thoughts that skip like a record player, nervous energy, and stress. In going back to our awareness by having a solid root or foundation leaves us feeling balanced and centered allowing us to navigate life’s ups and downs with a greater sense of ease. Breath work, yoga, meditation, Reiki treatments, as well as other ancillary tools can be so helpful in bringing back your awareness to yourself and your family. As I meditate daily, I take in a deep breath for a five second count, hold for a five second count, and release for a five second count. And when my mind starts to drift from the counting I ask, what does my husband need today, what do my children need today, what do I need for today. Once my focus and needs on my family and myself is complete I move on to my clients for that day. I request to be the best healer I can be for their highest and greatest good. I welcome their loved ones in spirit to be present if that is what they need for healing and is for their highest and greatest good. You see, healing isn’t just about the physical body. The healing encompasses the mind, body, and spirit and the body includes the physical. Emotions play a huge role in our healing process and needs to be nurtured. We at Integrative Healing and Wellness have made it our mission to help you get there. To love your thoughts, feel grounded and aware, and be well. In Health and Wellness
