Atsuta Shrine is one of the largest shrines in Japan and has a history that stretches back to the time of mythology.  This shrine will celebrate its 1900th anniversary in 2013. Atsuta shrine is an extremely high-ranking shrine, behind only Ise Jingu Shrine, and it has been worshipped faithfully since long ago. In addition to the Main Shrine, the 190,000m2 shrine grounds contain numerous subordinate shrines, creating a solemn space within the bustle of the city. Atsuta shrine is the subject of numerous legends, including the legends of Penglai and Princess Yang Kwei-fei,

Remains of the residence of Okabe Mataemon Okabe Mataemon participated in the construction of Nobunaga s Azuchi Castle in 1575. Generations of Okabe s family worked as carpenters for Atsuta Shirine, and Okabe worked to establish an organization of carpenters.

Confinement site of Tokugawa Ieyasu during childhood Tokugawa Ieyasu s childhood name was Takechiyo. At the age of six, he was captured while traveling to Sunpu and held captive by a comrade Oda, the enemy of Tokugawa.

●Shirotori Garden A Japanese stroll garden centered around a pond. The garden’s theme is “a watery story.”based on the geographical features of the Chubu region. 9:00-16:30 (closes gate at 17:00) Mondays (the following day if Monday is a holiday),  3rd Wednesday of the month,(4th Wednesday  if the 3rd Wednesday is a holiday), Dec. 29-Jan. 3 Adult: 300 yen; free for junior high school students and younger

●Hoji-ji Temple, Shiratori Tomb Established by Kobo Daishi. The adjacent Shiratori Tomb is said to be the tomb of Yamatotakeru-no-Mikoto.

●Danpusan Tomb With a length of 151 meters, this is the largest keyhole-shaped tomb in the Tokai region. Constructed in the early 6th century.

●Atsuta Shrine (Main Shrine) A place of worship for the god Atsuta, as well as the gods Amaterasu, Susanoo-no-Mikoto, Yamatotakeru-no-Mikoto, Miyasuhime-no-Mikoto and Takeinadane-no-Mikoto. ※Atsuta Shrine is also introduced in Chapter  3 and Chapter 12.

●Miyano Watashi Park It was a dock on the sea route from Atsuta to Kuwana in the Edo Period.

4 ●Seigan-ji Temple(Birthplace of  Minamoto-no Yoritomo) The stone monument at Minamotono Yoritomo-ko Ubuyu Pond marks the birthplace of Minamoto-no-Yoritomo.

●Atsuta Shrine (Treasures Museum) Opened in 1966. Holds a collection of approximately 6000 items, including a particularly large number of swords.  9:00-16:30 (no entrance after 16:10) Last Wednesday of each month and the followingday;  Dec. 25-31  Adult: 300 yen; Elementary &  Junior High School Students: 150 yen (Extra fees  are required for the special exhibition)

●Saidanbashi (Birthplace Of Dodoitsu) This bridge was replaced by a mother grieving for her deceased son, who died in the battle of Odawara in1590. It is famous for the ornamental cap on the bridge post that is engraved with a touching inscription.

Since long ago, Atsuta has thrived as the temple town of Atsuta Shrine, as the largest port town in the Owari region, and as the largest post-town on the Tokaido Highway. The area is also deeply connected to Yamatotakeru-no-Mikoto, Minamoto-no Yoritomo and Oda Nobunaga.
