Violence: The New Culture (Intro)

• Violence has become apart of our everyday lives to the point that many of us do not realize how much effect that it may have

• Many of times in the movies we see and the music we listen to perpetuate violence, whether it may be mild or highly explicit it’s still there

• In the recent years violence has been apart of the new type of entertainment that is worth watching and listening to

• Now we are at a point where these type of images are apart of our lives and we are immune to the fact that they are there

• Through this presentation, I will not blame the media for the violent culture but I will show the connections between the media and society

• Ultimately I will prove how both violence and society help to make up the culture of today

What’s Entertainment Without Violence?

• In today’s society 60-80% of what is watched and listened to has violence

• There is a starving of consumers to see action that has to deal with fighting, blood, or gore on screen whether video games or television

• Not only things that are being watched apart of this epidemic, but the music that we listen to

• Most people would affiliate rap music with violence, but genres such as heavy metal, punk, etc have violence in their songs but more or less talk about inflicting pain on one’s self. Rap music says otherwise

It’s A War Zone In The Backyard!

• In 2008 during the second week of September there has been 5 sets of shootings in Toronto

• Out of the five victims 3 of them have died from gun related violence

• One of the most recent was Boris Cikovic, who will now be the 50th homicide in the GTA

• In 2005, there was a reported 5,686 youths (10-24 yrs of age) murdered, which on average it came out to 16 kids per day

• Homicide was also the 2nd leading cause of death

• 86% of kids killed were male and of the 86%, only 4% were not killed with a firearm.

Media + Violence= More Emulated Violence

• It has been argued over decades as to whether or not media is affecting the way we think and how children grow

• Some people think that media has noting to do with how people act and it’s their free choice

• If that is the case their wouldn’t be such debate about this issue

• The bigger picture about this issues is whether or not it affects kids

• The American Psychiatric Association thinks that yes when a child is exposed to too much violence not only are they more aggressive, they are desensitized and there is a climate fear (paranoia)

Can Change Be Made?• In the heavily violent society that we live in, many don’t really take a

notice as to how bad it is• As the kids that are getting killed and are the ones that are killing others

get younger it proves that, it’s more than a bad generation its kids that weren’t set with real values

• Some people would blame the media and say that they are perpetuating to much violence and others would say that nowadays parents are raising their kids with the television set

• Many of times its not just one cause or the other, it is a bunch of factors that lead to the problems that society is now having

• The media can’t just agree to stop using the amount of violence that they use, and lastly no one can go into someone’s home to teach parents how to parent their kids

• Therefore, my conclusion is that if changes are to be made many parents have to sit down and explain images to their kids and ultimately teach their children how to think for themselves
