I want to welcome you to our Undergraduate Communication Conference. This 35-year-old tradition at Fresno State offers an opportunity for communication students to share their academic work with peers and seasoned scholars. Dr. David Natharius began this conference to offer undergraduates and first-year graduate students an opportunity to experience a “conference” on a smaller, more intimate level. Students have been able to connect with some of the most recognized scholars in the discipline. Our list of former keynote speakers reads like an Academy Award list of top scholars: James McCroskey, Aubrey Fisher, Edna Rogers, Bryan Whaley, William Wilmot, Julia Wood, Nick Trujillo, Jan and Peter Anderson, Sandra Metts, Leslie Baxter, John Stewart, Rod Hart, Everett Rogers, Stephen Littlejohn, Mike Motely, and many more. This year we are proud to announce that Dr. Thomas Hollihan is our keynote speaker. He is Professor of Communication at the USC Annenberg School of Communication, Los Angeles and publishes in the areas of argumentation, political campaign communication, contemporary rhetorical criticism, and the impact of globalization on public deliberation. He is the author of several books, including Uncivil Wars: Political Campaigns in a Media Age, Arguments and Arguing: The Products and Process of Human Decision Making (with Kevin Baaske), now in its second edition, and Argument at Century's End: Reflecting on the Past and Envisioning the Future. He has served as a consultant to many different political candidates, elected officials, business leaders, and also to the leaders of non-profit organizations and makes frequent appearances in the media to discuss political issues and campaign strategies. His keynote address is titled, “Globalization, Democracy, and Citizen Deliberation: A Call for Progressive Social Action.” This event always occurs the third week in April during our university’s annual Vintage Days. This spring festival includes a major crafts fair and events giving you plenty to see and do in addition to presenting papers or speeches. This year is a first for us in three ways. First, the conference is sponsored and put on by our Communication Graduate Student Association. Second, we have opened up the conference to rhetoric papers. Third, we have our first all community college panel. This year some of our local community colleges have sent to the conference their outstanding speeches from their public communication courses. I hope that you will find this conference a pleasant experience and enjoy it as much as we enjoy putting it on for all of you. Kathy Adams, Chair Department of Communication

Vintage Days is a four-day, student-planned celebration which attracts over 50,000 people from Fresno and the surrounding communities to the Fresno State campus. The annual spring event combines numerous social, cultural and recreational activities into a series of coordinated programs over an extended weekend.

Boomtown Carnival

In a carnival-like atmosphere, campus student organizations sponsor food and game booths for the biggest fund-raiser on campus. A booth decorating

contest adds to the flair as the student organizations decorate their booths in accordance with the Vintage Days theme. The booths are judged based on originality, appearance, creativity, enthusiasm and use of the theme and cash prizes are awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

Concerts

Vintage Days features live entertainment on two stages: one at the Crafts Faire, and the other at Boomtown Carnival. The musical entertainment includes everything from Reggae and Salsa music, Christian Rock and Gospel music, and Hip-Hop to Country music. On the Crafts Faire stage, there are also live performances by children's dance groups, belly dancers, high school Marimba bands, and more!

Angry, disinterested, and cynical: Public attitudes toward the 2008 U.S presidential election The United States has long declared its commitment toward developing democracies around the world, yet our people have shown little interest in preserving our own democratic system. The audience for political news is shrinking; candidates must raise vast sums of money to reach disinterested voters through paid political ads, only about half of eligible citizens cast ballots, and polls suggest that many of our citizens are angry, disinterested, and feel powerless. This talk examines how these attitudes and behaviors will likely impact political campaign practices in the 2008 presidential election.

Globalization, democracy, and citizen deliberation: A call for progressive social action Globalization has been a source of significant controversy. Some have celebrated globalization as a great social and economic equalizer that has and will continue to improve the lives of people around the world. Others have protested that globalization has meant a loss of jobs at home, a widening rich-poor gap, that has hastened the destruction of the environment. This talk will address four topics. First, it defines globalization, discusses its history, and identifies its obvious benefits and its glaring problems. Second, it discusses the impact of globalization on democratic deliberation. Third, it assesses the role that communication technologies and industries play in the emergence of new global power structures. Fourth, it calls for socially engaged teaching and research in communication that might enhance the opportunities for citizen deliberation and democratic expression appropriate to the demands of a global age.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The Department of Communication at California State University, Fresno, offers a blend of traditional and contemporary understandings of communication. In earning the Master of Arts in Communication degree, our students develop communication competencies utilized in the professional world in careers as varied as business, law, medicine, education, government, social and human services, high technology, and international relations. Our advanced degree program provides graduate students with a comprehensive understanding of the historical and philosophical foundations of the communication discipline, its major theoretical frameworks, and its primary research methodologies. Students investigate a wide range of applied communication problems within diverse contexts ranging from California’s San Joaquin Valley to the larger global community.

OUR GRADUATE PROGRAM

Our graduate program’s primary mission is to offer students a balance of advanced instruction in communication and rhetorical studies. Graduate study is seen as a continuing interaction among teaching, research, and service scholarship. The graduate program encourages free scholarly inquiry as a forum for the discussion and critical examination of ideas, findings and conclusions. Individuals are given opportunities to develop intellectually, personally, and professionally in various departmental activities and graduate seminars open to a diversified student population that includes non-traditional, adult, and international students.

A student’s graduate program is built around several core seminars, including communication theory, rhetorical theory, research methods, and rhetorical criticism, as well as elective seminars such as organizational communication, interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, argumentation, public address, small group communication, and health communication. Graduate students may select a thesis, project, or comprehensive examination for the Master’s degree culminating experience.

Graduate students in our program regularly present their scholarship at international, national, and regional conferences with substantial funding provided by the university. Student involvement in the intellectual life of the department extends to monthly Communication Forums, where faculty, students, and invited speakers share current research. Students have the opportunity to work collaboratively with faculty on research projects. Recent M.A. program graduates have co-authored with faculty articles that have appeared in the Handbook of Risk and Crisis Communication, the Handbook of Cancer Care and Communication, and the National Women’s Studies Association Journal.

OUR STUDENTS

Our graduate students exhibit excellence in and out of the classroom. Hundreds of distinguished alumni from our Master’s degree program have gone on to succeed in prestigious doctoral and professional programs. Many are currently teaching at both the university and community college levels. Others have utilized the M.A. degree to advance careers in the fields of law, corporate and non-profit communications, sales and marketing, politics and governmental communication.

Our graduate student population is a culturally diverse group of scholars and professionals pursuing various goals. Our program also seeks to attract international students as well as students from undergraduate disciplines other than Communication in order to foster a rich and innovative learning environment. A student-run Graduate Student Association provides students in the program with leadership opportunities and serves as an additional liaison with faculty governance.

ASSISTANCE AND SUPPORT Various types of financial assistance are available to our graduate students, including teaching assistantships. Additionally, a limited number of Provost’s Graduate Scholarships may be awarded to exceptionally qualified applicants. A small number of competitive tuition waivers are available to out-of-state and international applicants.

Also available for use are computers and a large library of publications and journals housed in the department office. When the expansion of the Madden Library is completed in 2008, Fresno State will offer the largest library in the California State University system.
