  • Function of the Lubricant

    Protection fromrust & corrosion

  • Petro-Canada Compressor OilProvide good lubrication and reliable compressor performance - Mineral oil based performanceLow cost versus syntheticsProvides a solid 2000 hr in rotary screw compressorsZinc free chemistry + HT base oils

  • Super Compressor FluidsFeatures and BenefitsFor superior performance equal to or better than competitive synthetic products use Super Compressor Fluid

Excellent oxidative and thermal stability - 8000 hours or 1 year service life (ADT < 185F)Lower maintenance, labour and disposal costs because fewer fluid changes are required relative to a mineral oilLess power required to drive rotating parts because fluid does not thicken over its service life

  • Super Compressor FluidFeatures and BenefitsDoes not deposit harmful sludge and varnish on rotors and separators

Reduces maintenance costs because parts stay cleaner longerAshless formulation is free of toxic heavy metals

Easily disposed of because used fluids are a non-hazardous waste and are readily accepted by oil recycling companies

  • Super Compressor FluidFeatures and BenefitsLow vapor pressure and volatility reduces oil carry over and oil make-up costsSuperior rust and corrosion inhibitors protects compressors in intermittent service from humidity damageLow odour and chemical inertness eliminate unpleasant smells and damage to paint work, a common problem with diester based fluidsRapid release of entrained air results in minimal if any foaming

  • Super Compressor FluidFeatures and BenefitsFluid readily separates from water which increases the operating efficiency of the oil/condensate separator systemRelative high Flash Point (compared to mineral based oils) of 432oF for increase SafetySuper Compressor Fluid can be used effectively in vacuum pump applications. However, primary recommendation would be Super Vacuum Fluid

  • Rotary Screw CompressorsSuper Compressor FluidAdvantages of SCF versus competitive products

Significantly lower priced than GlycolsLower priced than PAO and DiestersLower Toxicity than GlycolsLower odour than DiestersBetter water separation than either Diesters or GlycolsLonger Service life than mineral based oils (3 to 5 times longer).

  • Rotary Screw CompressorsSpecialty ProductsEndurance 8000 has all the features and benefits of Super Compressor Fluid

Intended for applications subjected to low ambient temperatures (pour point of -54oC (-65oF))8000 hrs or 1 year with ADT

  • Rotary Screw CompressorsSpecialty ProductsFor Natural Gas compression applications use SPX Fluids

SPX fluids are ISO 150 polyalkylene glycols which are insoluble in hydrocarbons and resist wash-offSPX 5000 is used in compression of sweet gas and in propane refrigeration serviceSPX 7000 is used for very high pressure applications and in the compression of sour and/or wet gasSPX 7000 will dissolve up to 20% water below 155oF which helps prevent corrosion during compressor shut-down

  • Rotary Screw CompressorsSpecialty ProductsFor use in natural gas field booster applications use NGS 1000NGS 1000 is an ISO 100 Synthetic (HT & PAO) fortified with corrosion inhibitors, lubricity improvers, antifoam, and pour point depressant additivesNGS 1000 is developed for harsh chemical environments and high temperatures

  • Rotary Screw CompressorsSpecialty ProductsIn dirty compressors use Compressor Cleaner before introducing the new compressor fluid

Optimum performance and oil service life when compressor is cleanPetro-Canada Compressor Cleaner is specifically designed to dissolve varnish and solubilize sludge from compressors while the unit is operatingShould not be run beyond 400 hr..Must be used when switching from a poly-glycol to a mineral or PAO based compressor oil

  • Reciprocating Compressors

  • Reciprocating CompressorsRole of LubricantPrimary role of a lubricant in a reciprocating compressor

Reduce friction and wear on moving partscool bearingsHelp seal compression chamberShould deposit little or no carbon on valves and exhaust services Prevent corrosion during shutdown

  • Reciprocating CompressorsBasic componentsReciprocating Compressors have many of the same components as an internal combustion engine

  • Reciprocating CompressorsLubrication RequirementsCrankcase oil lubricates journal bearings and connecting rodsSmaller unit may depend on splash lubrication for cylinder walls, piston pins/rings and valvesLarger units use pressurized drip systems to lubricate these components.

  • Reciprocating Compressors RecommendationsLubrication Recommendations

Older machines and those used intermittently, Compressor Oil 68 or 100Newer compressors and those used more than 4 hours/day, RCF-1000Small units (less than 2 hp) can use motor oil available in convenient small sizes (1 and 4 L bottles) that suit the small sumps

  • RCF-1000Synthetic blend (esters + HT based)Specifically formulated for single and multi-stage reciprocating compressors operating at high discharge temperatures (> 150C or 300oF)For use in splash lubricated, drip fed, and oil injected piston compressorsHigh viscosity index allows usage when either an ISO 68 or 100 is specified

  • Reciprocating CompressorRCF-1000 Service LifeRCF-1000 will operate up to 9000 hours in the compressor crankcase or 1 year what ever comes firstLength of service between valve overhaul is a function of compressor design, proper maintenance of oil feed rate and cleanliness of incoming air; target minimum 3000-6000 hours.

  • Reciprocating CompressorsRCF-1000 BenefitsRCF-1000 Performance benefits

Versus Mineral OilReduce maintenance costs due to less build-up of carbon.Excellent resistance to water contaminationLonger Life.

  • Reciprocating Compressors RCF-1000 BenefitsRCF-1000 Performance benefits

Versus DiesterReduced OdourLonger LifeNote that Diesters will keep valves cleaner than RCF-1000Versus PolyglycolLower priceEase of disposability

  • Reciprocating CompressorsCylinder Lubrication Over-lubrication is wasteful and may cause harmOnly slight film of oil should be present on the cylinder wallsPeriodically check exhaust valve for depositsToo much oil on the valve or excessive carbon built up usually indicates over lubrication

  • Reciprocating CompressorsNatural Gas CompressorsReciprocating Natural Gas Compressors require different lubrication from air compression service.

Compressors of dry, sweet natural gas can be lubricated with PC Gas Engine Oil (NGEO) in both the crankcase and upper cylindersWith sour or wet NG compression, the standard natural gas engine oils (PC Gas Engine Oil ) can be washed off, resulting in high wear in the rod packing and upper cylinder areas.

  • Reciprocating CompressorsNatural Gas CompressorsTo combat the washing-off effect with sour or wet natural gas:

Continue to use PC Gas Engine Oil, but increase the feed rate to compensate for the washing off factorUse the specially formulated heavier lubricant designed to resist wash-off, Compressor Oil RP 268 and RP460 For high pressure (>3000 psi) cylinder lubrication use the SPX 7000 Fluid

  • Rotary Vane Compressors

  • Rotary Vane CompressorRotary vane compressors stress the fluid more severely than any other type of compressors. Both Purity FG Compressor Lubricant 100 and Super Compressor Fluid 150 are rated as 1000 hour fluids in vane compressors. There are products on the market that have a 4000 hr rating, well beyond what we can currently offer.

  • Blowers and CentrifugalCompressors

  • Blowers and Centrifugal CompressorsLobe type compressors (blowers) dont put a lot of stress on the oil.

Generally would recommend a good quality mineral type oil such as Premium R&O 46 or 68 Centrifugal Compressors usually require a turbine-quality oil such as Premium R&O 32 or Super Turboflo 32.Either type of compressor will give good performance using Super Compressor Fluid.

  • Compressor Fluids SummaryPetro-Canada has a full range of Compressor Fluids to compete with virtually any product on the marketCompressor Oils are competitively priced with performance equal to or better than any other competitive mineral based compressor oil.Super Compressor Fluid provides synthetic performance at a lower price. It is inherently environmentally friendly, non toxic and can be disposed of with regular mineral oil.

  • Compressor FluidsSummarySCF benchmarking revealed its superiority even when compared head-to-head with expensive syntheticsEndurance 8000 has all the strength of Super Compressor Fluid with a lower cold temperature operating range RCF-1000 has been formulated to significantly reduce valve deposits in hot recips, what mineral oils are notorious for

  • Compressor FluidsSummaryFor the compression of Natural gas or Hydrocarbon gasses the following products are used:

SPX Fluids in rotary screw compressorsIn Reciprocating compressor:P-C Gas Engine OilCompressor Oil RPSPX 7000 Compressor Cleaner to clean dirty/varnished compressors or when switching from a diester or a polyalkylene glycol to Super Compressor Fluid
