rydenThe Mayor’s Message

Anne KrassilowskyMayor

Listen! Can you hear them? As the seasons change and the leaves fall, it is an awesome time to visit our Wilderness City.

On behalf of Council, I am pleased to welcome you to the Dryden Fall and Winter 2008 Leisure Guide. You will fi nd our community has many indoor activities and recreation facilities, but to truly experience our Wilderness City you need to participate in the abundance of outdoor activities right on our doorstep. This Leisure Guide is fi lled with a wealth of information from community associations to senior or youth programming, in fact, it will provide you with enough activities to keep you busy all fall/winter long.

There is so much to do whether you live here or are visiting. To enhance your visit I would like to open just a few doors in our community by starting with the Dryden Library where you will experience an exciting and warm atmosphere showcasing local artists, comfy corners and lots of fun for the children. Then just down the street the Dryden Museum will provide you with a tour of our past, present and future. Our community is very proud of the Dryden Regional Training and Cultural Centre so why not take in one of the many gala events provided by the Dryden Entertainment Series or listen to our local entertainers.

A great way to experience our vibrant fall colours is by walking or biking the wilderness hiking trails that surround our community. Dryden’s unique attributes and natural/cultural heritage can be explored along these routes.

Situated on Wabigoon Lake it is beyond doubt a four seasons destination. During the winter this lake takes on a whole new beauty. Whether you’re snowmachining, ice fi shing, kite skiing or viewing the northern lights, the Wabigoon is full of activity. There is nothing like the taste of freshwater fi sh in the winter.

I am confi dent you will fi nd what you are looking for in the pages of this guide. Visit the Dryden ski hill; skate on Chris Pronger’s outdoor rink; ride the slide at the pool; take in an Ice Dogs game or take a fi tness course – the opportunities are seemingly endless!

I encourage you and your family to make the most of Dryden’s fall and winter activities or if you are visiting let Dryden be your natural rest stop – enjoy!

Sincerely,

Councillors: Case, Collins, Fisher, Kurz, Wintle, Wood

THINGS TO DO

ICE FISHING

When the temperature gets cold the fi shing action heats up. Dryden is an angler’s delight with many opportunities to catch species such as walleye, northern pike, and lake trout on the Wabigoon Chain of Lakes. Take a winter vacation in Dryden where you can snowmobile to your ice hole or ice fi shing shack or just walk out from Van Horne Landing.

A LOCAL TAKE:

“Come the middle of December though, the temperature has indeed dropped and the season is closed. Christmas comes and goes and hopefully you get that new rod or gun that you wanted from Santa this year.

Before you know it, it’s New Year’s Eve and the next day, January 1st is the opening day of the Lake Trout season. It is a great way to spend the fi rst day of the year -- out on the ice with friends or family. Ice fi shing for lake trout will last only a few months. You can also be fi shing for walleye if you like, it is a splendid time to go riding on snowmachines and just take in all the beauty of Patricia Region.

Some local outfi tters and clubs groom many miles of trail and you can literally travel for a week or more if you so desire across new trails everyday, moving from town to town. The winter does seem to last a long time but there is plenty to keep you occupied. Towards the end of the winter, just before walleye season closes in April, there are many days where you can be out on the ice and get just as good a tan as you would have in Florida. There are days when you could even go shirtless, with the sun being so nice and warm.”

HUNTING

Hunting is an important activity for people around the world. For many, it is still an important method of food gathering. For others, hunting is a recreational activity that provides an opportunity to further friendships and family ties. For most hunters it is also a chance to experience nature and relax in the outdoors while making an important contribution to conservation.

Hunting has long been a popular outdoor activity for thousands of Ontario residents and visitors to the province. Each year, avid hunters take to the fi eld in pursuit of waterfowl, deer, moose and other quarry.

AREA CHAMPIONS

Hi, my name is Joel Cates. I’m 24 years old and have lived in Vermilion Bay my entire life. I grew up riding snowmachines from a very early age, I rode my fi rst one at the age of 4. The area has many great places to ride, and I spent as much time as possible on my sled. As I got older I decided to try my luck at racing at the age of 16, I won the fi rst race I ever entered, and it was all over from there. From that point on my life was very dedicated to racing, the summers were spent racing moto-x and the winters were fi lled with sno-x. Sno-x racing seemed to be my real passion, so I decided to concentrate all my time on that. All of my time and efforts have paid off, and I’ve won many races and awards, rookie of the year my fi rst season out, season championships in the sport class, semi pro class, and the pro class. In early ‘06 I changed over from racing sno-x, to freestyle sno-x. Freestyle was always a dream of mine since I was a little kid. I was signed on a major team that was giving me all the support I needed. I competed at the national level, and traveled many different places jumping my sled. I’m still riding more than ever, and plan on doing it as long as possible.

DRYDEN ICE DOGS

The Dryden Ice Dogs 2007/2008 season was a successful one in a number of ways. The Ice Dogs were ranked in the top 15 across Canada from December to the end of the season. At one point ranking #5 heading into the Dudley Hewitt Cup which was held in New Market, Ontario.

The Ice Dogs claimed fi rst place in the league at the year’s end which gave them the League Pennant. Through the playoffs the Ice Dogs won the League Championship, Bill Salonen Cup, in the 5th game in Dryden before a sold- out crowd.

The Ice Dogs fan base was growing as the year went on and continued throughout the playoffs.

The Dryden Ice Dogs also saw 5 players going into College or University for the 2008/2009 season. Nicolas Doiron received a scholarship to Norwich University Div. III, Marlon Gardner received a scholarship to Neumann College Div. III, Graeme Harrington received a scholarship to University of North Dakota Div. I, Colin McIntosh received a scholarship to Utica College Div. I and Rowen Bruetsch will attend Ryerson University.

The Dryden Ice Dogs also had 4 players in the top ten in scoring throughout the better part of the season. Nicolas Doiron won the league scoring race and goaltender Graeme Harrington won the league Scholarship Award.

College scouts are also very interested in some of our returning players for next year.

There is no doubt that the forest industry, particularly in Ontario, has been facing signifi cant challenges for some time. A strong Canadian dollar combined with rising fuel and chemical costs and a declining market in North America for some products, are all contributing to very challenging conditions for the forest industry right across Canada.

The Dryden pulp and paper operation, recognizing the competitive challenges, has undertaken many initiatives to restore its competitiveness including a “two-trades” program which enables trades persons to become trained and certifi ed in other trades in addition to their current trade. The company assessed employees’ skills and where necessary, provided academic upgrading to prepare them for apprenticeship training.

Domtar, in partnership with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union and Confederation College of Applied Arts and Technology, developed the trades training centre in an underutilized garage on the Dryden site.

“This project is key to improving our mill’s competitiveness,” says Doug Minor, Maintenance and Engineering Manager at the Dryden facility.

To date 92 apprentices have enrolled in the program. They are getting marketable, portable qualifi cations – that, in turn, is creating a higher skilled and fl exible workforce.

“It is amazing how our employees have responded to the apprenticeship training,” adds Minor. “It is apparent that many are very proud of what they are achieving and it is very rewarding to be a part of that.”

The company has also made the facility available for other training, including the Aboriginal Women in Skilled Trades Program and pre-apprenticeship and carpentry and electrical programs.

The Dryden operation was honoured for its progressive approach to trades training as a recipient of the Minister’s Apprenticeship Employer Recognition Award presented by the Honourable John Milloy, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. The Dryden mill was one of over 200 businesses across Ontario nominated for the award.

Urban Trail – Red 12.3 km

The Urban Trail System is a network of 5 attractive, intra-city routes that provide safe, enjoyable pedestrian access to commercial and residential neighbourhoods and community facilities and services - urban landscapes of interconnecting roads, sidewalks and pathways. The Urban Trail incorporates shopping opportunities, access to community facilities and services. Dryden’s unique attributes and natural/cultural heritage can be explored along this route. Residents and visitors can walk, explore and enjoy the community. During your travels you can stop and visit the Dryden Museum, the Public Library or one of many community parks.

Dryden Signature Trail - Blue 5.4 km

The Dryden Signature Trail System consists of two trail routes, uniquely designed to provide hands-on, engaging, intriguing, recreational/interpretative encounters to capture the imagination of community residents and visitors. The Signature Trail route winds along the Wabigoon River from Johnston Park located on the Trans Canada Highway 17 to the Laura Howe Marsh located off Van Horne Avenue. Wetlands are Nature’s richest domains. Neither land nor lake, wetlands weave together elements of earth and water to create unique habitats within the boreal forest.

Wetlands are always ‘on the edge’. The Laura Howe Marsh is 2.0 km and an excellent example of life ‘on the edge of the forest and on the edge of the lake’. Creatures of both worlds come to the marsh for water, food or shelter. The marsh is an oasis for the animals of the forest and a nursery for small creatures in the lake.

The Nature in the City Trail – Green 6.8 km

The Nature in the City Trail System is a beautiful “necklace” of trails that link together all the aesthetic, natural areas surrounding the city core. The rich assembly of natural settings and rich wetlands is the City’s most valuable outdoor recreational attribute and asset. The “necklace” provides excellent opportunities for short or extended walking/hiking/jogging or cycling and skiing.

The trail accommodates multiple use walking, jogging and strolling and that serves as a cross-country ski route in the winter months. This trail is a rich assembly of natural areas surrounding the City.

Dryden Trail System

The recreation walking routes were designed under the Communities in Action Fund and the Dryden Walks Around the World Project. During this project 12 walking routes were established starting and ending at the Dryden Recreation Complex. In 2007, Dryden collectively walked the circumference of the planet 40,075 km. The routes shown in the Leisure Guide are the four most advanced routes and signs are posted to assist you with course-plotting throughout the community. The recreation complex has moderate and beginner routes available and as well we offer a free year round indoor walking program Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. For more information, contact the Dryden Recreation Complex at 223-1425.

Pauline WithersPauline’s love of nature and all things beautiful inspire her to paint the beauty that surrounds her. Although she has had an interest in art for many years, she didn’t begin to paint until her retirement in 2003.

While taking a carpentry course, an artist friend recognized her ability and encouraged her to paint. Pauline attended workshops to develop her talent. Encouraged by fellow artists Pauline began to display her work.

She is inspired by fall leaves and foliage, some leaves done in acrylics can be seen on two park benches done for the City of Dryden. Using her favourite medium, watercolours, Pauline’s many works include fl owers, still life, landscapes of Dryden area and her beautiful backyard.

Her art has sold in Canada and the USA.

Shirley FranklinShirley was born and educated in Nova Scotia. She spent most of her life her in Dryden. For many years while working in the newspaper business her art was put on hold, it is just in the last few years that she again became involved in drawing and oil painting. Working in pencil or oil paint she loves to do all subjects, portraits being her favourite. The bench that Shirley painted for the City of Dryden is located on the front lawn of the City Hall and depicts “The Dragon Boat Race”. Shirley is presently working on another bench for the City that will depict a Fall Fair Scene.

Irene SkeneMy journey began in Toronto and moved to Port Credit, a small town due west on Lake Ontario. After graduating from Port Credit Secondary School, I attended the University of Western Ontario, receiving a joint degree in English and Psychology. I then attended Lakeshore Teachers’ College to train as an elementary teacher, but, by some strange twist of fate, I ended up teaching Visual Arts and English to secondary students at Dryden High School for over 32 years. During that time, I also received my Visual Arts degree and my Master’s degree in Education, and taught extension courses for Lakehead University, and the Ministry of Education. Committee and volunteer work, art, acting and writing has been and continues to be varied and extensive, yet challenging and intriguing to all that is me.

I am married to Andrew, retired CEO of the Dryden Regional Health Centre and that we have two children- Alexander, who is an International Baccalaureat (French) educator in Burlington, Ontario, and Jillian, who is the Conference Co-ordinator for Desire2Learn, an on-line learning company, in Kitchener, Ontario.

ME AND MY BENCH

William BrissonWilliam’s benches all with Airplane themes are located at Hwy 17 near McKinstry, between Pizza Hut and OPP, and near the Northern Lights Credit Union.

Willene MoffatWillene has been an artist ever since she could hold a pencil or crayon. She studied fi ne arts at the University of Manitoba and has been creating different works of art throughout her life! Her career as a visual arts teacher at high schools is Winnipeg, Sioux Lookout and Dryden is a positive and inspiring part of her love for all of the arts.

She works in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting, weaving, pottery, and stained glass.

Her original designs for the benches are inspired by the scenic views from her studio on Lake Wabigoon and the surrounding areas of Dryden.

Louella KellarI have been painting since 1969. I prefer oils, but acrylics are taking over it seems. I dabble in watercolours now and then and fi nd drawing to be very relaxing. Wildlife and human portraits are my main interest but any subject is worthy of attention. This bench scene is a depiction of the rapids below the mill dam on the north side of the tracks.

Helen GrymaloskiA lifelong resident of Northwestern Ontario, alon Hwy #105, just north of Vermilion Bay. Her fi rst love is photography, she is self-taught with a passion that goes back to early childhood. She revels in the beauty and serenity of her chosen domain which provides her with some wonderful sites and colours for her photographs.

Helen has been painting for a few years, she enjoys watercolours as well as acrylics. Her photography provides ample resource material for her paintings and she fi nds that she has a defi nate passion for painting berries.

Jim MulykMy work refl ects growth and/or stagnation of “the person” – mentally, physically, and spiritually. Inspired in how the world presents pathway indicators to higher levels of awareness and fulfi llment and the individual’s ability to recognize these “road signs” and follow their calling despite what has been hard wired into the consciousness..

positive and inspiring part of her love for all of the arts.

She works in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting, weaving, pottery, and stained glass.

Her original designs for the benches are inspired by the scenic views from her studio on Lake Wabigoon and the surrounding areas of Dryden.

Heather RivetHeather is a passionate about using her photography to illustrate how she sees the world through her eyes. Her extensive portfolio of Dryden and surrounding area does just that.

“Landscape photography at its best is more than simply reproducing the image of a landscape; it evokes the ‘genius loci’ or ‘spirit’ of a place - an emotional response, a remembrance, or sense of actual presence in the viewer. The remarkable work of Heather Rivet does exactly that, as can be seen by taking a tour of the gallery.” excerpt from Soundzine Magazine - Feb 2008

Heather has been published in many magazines and graced the cover of serveral, along with a book of poetry. She has also self-published two books, A Collection of Creative Minds - Artwork from Dryden Area Artists and Collective Insights - A portfolio of Photography Images, both available at Blurp.com www.blurb.c o m / u s e r / c h e e k e r s .Heather’s galleries can be seen at http://heatherrivet.zenfolio.com or http://cheekers.redbubble.com or email: [email protected]

Dryden Area Cultural Partnership

The Dryden Area Cultural Partnership is a group of volunteers who are interested in the promotion of culture in the Dryden area, and who attended the Municipal Cultural Planning Forum in Kenora in April, 2006. After this, we decided to complete a Cultural Mapping and Inventory exercise to determine what was already present in our community. At the end of this session, it was decided “to lead the formation of a cultural umbrella group.” In our next meetings we defi ned culture as “A sense of place – who we are, where we come from and what we will become”, defi ned our mission statement: “To ensure that culture plays a leadership role in the future of the Dryden Area” and fi nally, chose our name, the Dryden Area Cultural Partnership (DACP) and elected an Executive to lead the process. Our last two years have seen the completion of a strategic plan, the institution of an annual Cultural Fair, the establishment of a dialogue with the City of Dryden which has culminated in the establishing of a Cultural Policy and Plan, our recognition at the provincial level as one of four model communities in Ontario, as well as hosting and helping to write the City’s Cultural Policy, and working towards the formation of an advisory Round Table group. We are proud of our accomplishments, and recognize that they are just the beginning of an important new focus for our City.
