Summit Academy’s fifth annual Mountaintop Breakfast was a huge success again for the
2008-2009 school year. Nearly 350 people attended the November 2008 event at the
Henry Clay building downtown. As the first student enrolled at Summit Academy, our high-
lighted speaker alumnus Gray Middleton, was an inspiration to all.
Nineteen people joined our Soaring Eagle Society with pledges of $1,000 or more per
year, for five years. Together with the other donations from the event, Summit Academy
raised over $200,000 for the students and programs at Summit Academy. Thank you to the wonderful
Breakfast sponsors shown below!

Thank you to these people and organiza t ions w ho gave g i f ts o f merchandise or serv ice .
Summit Academy was founded seventeen years ago, and for fifteen of those years we have made our happy home in the former Middletown Christian Church property. The facility was over 30 years old when we bought it, and we knew that we would need a plan to maintain and upgrade the old infra-structure.
Thanks to the generosity of a number of faithful supporters, we were able to make a big dent in our ‘to do’ list of capital improvements and repairs. We worked hard this summer on a number of projects, including a new roof and gutters on Tykes’ Peak Kindergarten, two new furnaces in our main building, and new duct work and ventilation in the lower floor of the main building.
These repairs and upgrades were expensive, and not in our budget. The projects themselves were not glamorous. Regardless, the special people and organizations listed below stepped up to make it possible for us to complete this critical work. We offer our most humble thanks for their generosity.

Dear Friends,
It’s hard to pick up a paper or turn on the television without being inundated with discouraging news about the economy. Unfortunately, in the last fiscal year, Summit Academy was not immune from the fallout associated with the downturn of our national economic cycle.
In a typical year, Summit admits a significant number of students after the start of the school year when parents realize that a conventional school may not suit their child. Sadly, the reality of tuition payments left many parents no choice but to ride out the year in an unsatisfactory learning
environment, where neither they nor their child were happy. Even more tragic was that many Summit families were forced to make tough decisions on how to best utilize dwin-dling personal resources. It was about this time last year that the Board of Trustees real-ized that the school was looking at a tough fiscal year.
Significant accomplishment in the face of adversity has been the origin of countless famous quotes and clichés. Most, if not all of those lines, would be appropriate to describe the Summit Community’s response to these unexpected financial pressures.
• The Mountaintop Breakfast fundraiser matched donation levels from previous years, when the economy was more robust, and this generosity helped sustain much-needed tuition assistance. (One anonymous donor contributed a year’s tuition to a Summit family dealing with an unexpected job layoff.)
• Almost the entire administrative and teaching staff took voluntary pay cuts in a united effort to help ease the budget strain.
• Though we were facing a very tight budget, we chose not to increase tuition for the first time in Summit’s history, in order to ease the financial burden for our families.
These are just a few examples of why Summit is such a magical place. These collective efforts allowed the school to move forward with its mission to “Provide a nurturing educational environment for students with learning differences, in which each student's academic achievement comes to reflect his or her learning potential.” The entire Summit family should be thanked and congratulated for their actions over the last year.
There are differing views on whether our local or national economies are back on track. However, there is little doubt that Summit Academy is headed in the right direction. We have stronger starting enrollment numbers than projected, and multiple children have already transferred in after the start of the school year. The Trustees are confident that Summit is now in a position to ride out these challenging times.
Anyone familiar with the Summit Academy experience knows how life-changing it can be for children who learn differently. Many of us dream of the day when tuition is not a hurdle for any child in need of a Summit education. Until that day arrives, we must be thankful to all who make sacrifices for the benefit of both current and future Summit kids.
Sincerely,
David Strite
President of the Board of Trustees and Matthew’s Dad

Almost 200 people attended the 2009 Minds of All Kinds
Gala. Fabulous food and entertainment were plentiful; the
silent auction was jazzed up by The Todd Hildreth Trio, and
comedian Rich Ragains entertained during dinner.
The night culminated in a lively live auction where a UPS
Flight simulator package and condo packages in Kauai and Naples, Florida created excitement.
But the highlight of the live auction was a “work of genius” piece of student art called “Einstein”
which is an original oil painting made from a famous photograph. The Summit Academy Art Club
and their sponsor Mrs. Freibert made a sketch of this famous photo of Albert Einstein, taped a grid
over it, and hand-painted every square, each in its own unique way. The event made almost
$33,000 for the students of Summit Academy. Thank you to all of our gala donors!

Dear. Mrs. Thornton,
As we begin another school year, we want to extend our best wishes to you for another successful year helping
your students reach their potential. We also want to thank you for sending your wonderful students our way.
You should be proud to know that Summit Academy graduates currently enrolled at Trinity High School have found success in a variety of activities and academic programs. We share your pride in these diverse students and their achievements in our Advanced, Honors, Academic and Traditional programs of study. They are also excelling in theatre, athletics, student
government, and social and service organizations.
Moreover, we are excited that 10 of Trinity’s Class of 2010 seniors are Summit graduates, like senior Nate Allen, who has shared his talents with us in our theatre and speech programs while finding academic success in our Honors Program. Shepard Thurman has been a dedicated mem-ber of Becket House and accompanied our varsity baseball team last spring to the state tournament as the team’s manager. And current junior Spencer Ridge will be recognized this fall with his second consecutive Shamrock Award, presented to students who have earned honor roll
grades every quarter in a school year.
Additionally, 10 freshmen completed their first year last May, and more than half of them saw their names on our honor roll list at least once dur-ing their freshman year. Alex Clemons earned the Shamrock Award for his work last year. We have been equally delighted by Graham Fowler
and his infectious smile and true sense of brotherhood.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of service to you or your families. Again, all our best to your students and staff this school year!
Regards,
Jennifer R. Browning

Hello Hello
and and
GoodbyeGoodbye
There’s a New Sheriff In Town
We are very happy to welcome Ms. Janice Cates as Summit Academy’s new Director of Development. Janice is a Louisville native who, several years ago, returned to Louisville after 25 years on the west coast and in Asia.
She received a BS in Business from the University of San Francisco and began her career in fundraising with the Center for Marine Conservation in San Francisco. She worked for a number of non-profit organizations overseas, including Friends of the Earth in Hong Kong, where she instituted a recycling program in conjunction with the local government.
She has also worked for several non-profit organiza-tions in Louisville; most recently with The Cabbage Patch
Settlement House and St. Francis High School as the Director of Development, where she oversaw the development office, working closely with corporations and major local philanthropists.
Janice is energetic and enthusiastic about Summit’s mission to make a stellar education available for all children with learning differences. We are very happy to have her as part of our Summit family!
