As mothers, we often wish we knew what our kids really thought about us. When they’re little, they tend to say exactly what’s on their mind. “You don’t look that old.” “That stuff you just sprayed on sure smells funny.” “You’re the best mommy ever!” But as our children get older, influenced by peers and the outside world (and television, of course!), the invisible mother-child umbilical cord starts its inevitable fraying, and as the kisses good-bye get scanter so do the words that we long to hear. In honor of Mother’s Day, I asked my son’s 4th grade class at Skyland Elementary to draw a picture of their mothers, and to tell their favorite thing about them. These are their impressions of their real moms.

Mrs. Terri R. Gilbert Skyland Elementary 4th Grade TeacherMy mom has always been an outstanding role model. She taught me the importance of prayer, loving the Lord, family, and going to church. She also taught me the important values and traits of being a good mother. I only hope that my children think I am as great a mother as she was and still is to me. I can always count on her to be there when I need anything. She prays for me daily and always calls to let me know she is thinking about me. I could never have asked for a better role model and friend.

When my son was just a little boy, as I tucked him into bed at night I would al-ways say, “I love you more than beans and rice.” This eventually evolved into a game of I love you more than…chocolate-chip cookies… ice-cream…and his personal favorite - fish sticks. Today, all we have to do is say to each other “beans and rice” and we know, in code, that it means “I love you more than anything.” It’s always nice to hear, no matter the age or the way it’s said, that we as mothers are still important to - and loved by - our children. Happy Mother’s Day! dA special thanks to Mrs. Carolyn Styles, principal of Skyland Elementary School.
