Custom colors and compounds are Penn Color’s business, and have been for over 40 years. This privately-held company continues to lead the way in the development of color solutions for masterbatches for the plastics industry, for a wide variety of resins.

Five years ago, Penn Color went looking for an extruder supplier to help them upgrade their capabilities. They chose ENTEK, and since then theyhave purchased numerous ENTEK E-MAX™ twin-screwextruders. From initial trials at ENTEK’s in-house lab

to test multiple formulations, to the significant time savings realized due to the fast color

change abilities of the E-MAX™ during production runs, to the fast

turnaround of spare parts and expedited shipments for ongoing

productivity, Penn Color is a believer in the ENTEK difference.

ENTEK’s commitment to service is helping Penn Color succeed.

ANTEC PLENARY SPEAKERS

Tuesday, May 811:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.Norman J. Wagner

Alvin B. and Julia O.Stiles Professor, Centerfor Molecular andEngineering Thermodynamics,Department of Chemical Engineering,University of Delaware

STF Armor: Nanoparticle Composite Textiles andPerformance Plastics for Flexible Ballistic & Puncture-Protective Materials

Leading an active research group at the University of Delaware,Professor Wagner pursues studies in the fields of rheology, com-plex fluids, particle technology, nanotechnology, and molecularscience. He recently received the Paul A. Siple Memorial Awardfrom the U.S. Army for his research on applications of shear-thickening fluids for ballistic-resistant nanocomposite materials, jointly with scientists from the Army Research Labs.

Professor Wagner is currently on sabbatical as a visiting professor of soft condensed matter physics at the University ofRome. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar at the University ofKonstanz, Germany, and a guest professor at the ETH, Zurich. Hehas over 90 publications in internationally recognized journalsand is active in the Society of Rheology and AIChE (amongother organizations).

Dr. Wagner received his B.S. from Carnegie Mellon Universityand his Ph.D. from Princeton University.

Presentation Abstract:Novel ballistic-, stab- and puncture-resistant flexible compositematerials are synthesized from colloidal and nanoparticle dispersions exhibiting shear thickening, i.e., shear-thickeningfluids (STFs). STFs are intercalated in aramid and other performance textiles.

Through ballistic, stab & laboratory testing, the mechanism ofenergy adsorption at ballistic rates is demonstrated to resultfrom reversible shear thickening. NIJ standard testing shows theperformance enhancement of the composites. Control of particlesize, size distribution, shape, surface and bulk properties in thesynthesis is shown to be critical to performance. Melt blendingof STFs with elastomers yields new materials, known as STF-suspoemulsions, with exceptional tear resistance. Potentialapplications of these dispersions as novel energy-absorbingmaterials are discussed.

Monday, May 7 Carbon Nanotubes in Polymers1:30 p.m. – 5 p.m. Moderator: Brian Grady, University of Oklahoma

Carbon nanotubes have excellent mechanical properties and high thermal and electrical conductivities, making them ideal fillers for polymers in some applications. This forum brings together leaders in the field of carbon nanotubes/polymer composites to discuss the history and current understanding of how carbon nanotubes behave as fillers in polymers. The uniqueness of carbon nanotubes as compared to other fillers will be highlighted. Technical and economic challenges that must be overcome to expand the use of carbon nanotubes in polymers will also be discussed in this forum.

Presentations include:

Tuesday, May 8 New Developments in Active and Intelligent Packaging1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Moderators: Ryan Breese, Eclipse Film Technologies, and Maggie Baumann, G H Associates

The field of active and intelligent packaging has generated a great amount of excitement in the polymer industry. Active andintelligent packaging is a broad field, which includes both rigid applications, such as beverage containers, and flexible applications, such as films for food packaging. In addition, newer fields of polymer science, such as nanocomposite and biomaterial science, can be combined with traditional packaging science to provide insight into advanced development programs that will provideunique products in the future. The purpose of this session is to present new discoveries in materials science and demonstratetheir advantages in a wide variety of packaging applications and to inspire the rethinking of today's packaging technology.

When Steve Maguire popularized the gravimetric batch blenderin the 80’s, he started out small, working from his house. Fromthose early blenders, the line has grown both larger and smaller;big and little, if you will. Now, the new Maxi Batch™ is thelargest volume blender at 8000 lbs/hr and the littlest one- theMicro Blender™- is still well…micro. The concept howeverremains the same, actually improving through field trials. Thereal-world test is having 30,000 units installed worldwide.

Steve Maguire remembers his days as a processor and the ever-present pressure to produce. Technology, after all, is supposedto work for you, not against you. That’s why Maguire sees blenderlogic as the gateway to process control in the future. Accuracy, precise dosing, economy of materials never go out of fashion. And little things count, especially as resin costs rise.

So the big story is really about combining productivity withsavings. Why not make a little move today and contact us? Who knows? It could make a big difference.

New MaxiBatch™

Blender, Maguire’slargest blender at 8000 lbs/hr is ideal forcompounders (i.e. woodcomposite applications). It can handle up totwelve ingredientsincluding powders.

Steve Maguire, President andFounder Maguire Products, Inc.
