MADE IN DOWNTOWN L.A.

• These factory workers are being paid roughly $12 an hour, which allows them to sustain a decent life.

• Other benefits of working as an American Apparel employee include heath care and day care.

Prosperity For All

• What is it about these clothes? Visually, nothing states that by purchasing one you are helping create more work for immigrant employees in the United States. Do these shirts mention that their working conditions are up to code, and that no child is being exploited during the process of these garments being made …

• Or do people just wear these clothes because the social value of fitting in by wearing American Apparel clothes is very high right now?

LEGALIZE LA – The Basics

• “Legalize LA” is a project started by Dov Charney, the CEO of American Appare. He wanted to get immigrants from South America to have their green cards to legally live in the United States. Many of his workers are in the same position Dov himself was when he emigrated from Canada on a student visa. Years later he was granted a green card. The goal is to get all immigrants- not just those working for American Apparel- to be permanent citizens of the U.S.. The project has made much of a splash with such people as the Mayor or Los Angels, ABC and The New York Times.

Legalize LA? … Well Who Knew What

Knew

Didn'tKnow

CouldExplain

• People who wear the clothes should know about them- of those who claimed to know normally wear American Apparel clothing.

• Only about 10 or so actually knew about the Legalize LA project.

Meet the Employees

• As the stereo-typical American Apparel employee drifts around the store, their zombie like demeanour is quite deceiving.

• The act they put on creates a sense of not wanting to be there; they seem to be unaffected by the customers.

• Do they know as little as they appear to care?

For Goodness Sake

• Do people care about the real issues facing people in the actual world?

• Why don’t people shop ethically?

• Is everyone more worried about how they look than what they could be doing to help someone else’s life?
