About Our Cover… • The unusual looking “B’s” at the top are actually tenor clef signs.

The tenor clef signs resembles our capital letter B and, therefore, become metaphorical representations.

• “Eye of the Tiger” from the movie “Rocky VI”—Christmas 2006 is our featured song.

In fact, this is one of the top ten most ordered titles from the Hal Leonard Music Publishing Company. Clap and stomp along with us! Ode To Joy………………………………………Ludwig Van Beethoven Arranged by James K. Williams One of the world’s greatest composers, Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827), became completely deaf in 1802. Although he could not hear his music like we do, he could “hear” it in his mind. The theme of his last Symphony, Number 9, is called “Ode To Joy.” Johann Von Schiller composed it to the text of a poem. Ode To Joy was featured in concerts celebrating the reunification of Germany in 1990. Ode To Joy is performed in our annual Santa Arrival Parade each year.

Taps…………………………………………………...Official Bugle Call Of The USA Military The exact origin of Taps is unsure, however, General Daniel A. Butterfield of the Union Army arranged the piece and had his trumpeter start using this piece for the bugle call to “Extinguish Lights (Lights Out) or Taps as the soldiers came to call it. At the end of the day the American flag is lowered to this call. Later on, this bugle call became associated with funerals, also. The Star Spangled Banner……………Music attributed to John Stafford Words by Francis Scott Key Arranged by John O’Reilly The Star-Spangled Banner, national anthem of the United States, was approved by an act of Congress on March 3, 1931. The text was written by the American lawyer and poet Francis Scott Key on board a British frigate during the British bombard-ment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1814. Key had boarded the ship under a flag of truce to arrange for the release of a prisoner held by the British during the War of 1812 and had been temporarily detained during the attack. The sight of the American flag still flying on the following morning inspired Key to write the poem. First printed in a handbill and then in a Baltimore newspaper, it soon became a popular song , sung to the tune of the drinking song "To Anacreon in Heaven," which was attributed to the British composer John Stafford Smith. Procession of the Cyborgs………………………………..…….Mark Williams A march composed by the same person who wrote Centurion and Cardiff Castle. Mark Williams has demonstrated his expertise with this level of band. Allegretto……………………Ludwig Van Beethoven/arr. by Douglas Court From Symphony 7, second movement, this enchanting movement is one of Beetho-ven’s most famous works. Grade 1 ½ with chromatics and rhythmic subdivisions, this piece was used to help raise money for troops in 19th century Europe. Pepper’s highest recom-mendations! Listen as our timpani has a dialogue with the rest of the band. Continued on the next page
