 FACT SHEET QCLNG pipeline QGC Pty Limited, the Australian subsidiary of BG Group, is developing coal seam gas in the Surat Basin of southern Queensland for domestic and export markets through its Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) Project.   • Pipeline construction process

    SurveyDetailed engineering, environmental and cultural surveys are conducted to determine the most suitable construction techniques.

    Welding and ultrasonic testingThe pipe is welded above ground. All the welds are subject to ultrasonic testing to ensure they meet Australian and international standards.

    Clear and grade easementA 40 metre easement is cleared and graded along the pipeline route .

    Weld joint coatingEach weld is grit blasted and covered with a protective coating to prevent corrosion and protect against mechanical impacts.

    Stringing and bendingThe 42 inch steel pipes are hauled by truck to the easement. The pipes are laid end-to-end. The pipe can be bent using specialised equipment to match changes in terrain or direction in route.

    Pre-trenchingA trench is dug for the pipeline. As part of the fauna management program, the trench is monitored and soil ramps are built to enable animals to exit the trench easily.

    Lowering inSide boom tractors are used to lower the welded pipe into the trench.

    About one kilometre of pipe is lowered into the trench at a time.

    Pressure testingThe integrity of the pipeline is further verified using hydrostatic testing in accordance with Australian Standard 2885 (AS2885). The pipeline is capped with test manifolds and water is pumped in to a pressure higher than the maximum allowable operating gas pressure.

    Tie-insA tie-in is when two lowered-in pipe strings are welded together in the trench.

    ReinstatementThe easement is restored to its original state as much as possible. Where required, erosion control mechanisms are constructed and additional topsoil is spread to encourage soil retention and vegetation growth.

    Padding and backfillingFine soil is placed around the pipe in the trench to act as padding, protecting the pipeline. After padding is completed the trench is backfilled and compacted with the subsoil and the original topsoil.

    SignageAs a safety measure, signs are erected to warn of the location of the buried pipeline.

    Safety measures

    During construction

    The following safety measures are being applied:

    Burial depth: The pipeline is being buried to depths greater than those likely to be reached by common land use. In areas of deep ripping cultivation, the pipeline is being buried with up to 1.5 metres cover.

    Signage: Above ground, marker posts are being placed within sight of each other along the entire length of the pipeline.

    Emergency shutdown systems: Electronic systems are being installed with remotely activated closure valves in strategic positions along the pipeline.

    Emergency crews: Specialist crews are trained to respond and work closely with local emergency services, in the unlikely event of a pipeline incident.

    Testing: Before it is operational, the pipeline will be fully tested to ensure it is safe.

    Information: Landowners and other users of land above the pipeline will receive information regarding how to conduct their activities safely.

    After construction

    The following safety measures will be applied:

    Safety and operating plan: Operation and maintenance of the pipeline will be carried out in accordance with a safety and operating plan that will be regularly reviewed. The plan is regulated by legislation and audited by the Queensland Government.

    Maintenance inspections: Routine maintenance and inspections will be conducted to ensure the pipeline is operated safely. Once buried, the pipeline will be constantly monitored for pressure, temperature and external cathodic protection, a technique used to prevent the corrosion of metals and coatings.

    Patrols: Regular patrols will be conducted to ensure that no unauthorised activities, such as deep digging, occur on the pipeline easement.
