Goal and Scope of IBM standard configurations

Unified schema of IBM SAP standard configuration scenarios

for AIX, IBM i and Wintel

based on : Realistic SAP solution scenarios

    Consistent sizing assumptions

    Comparable system concepts

Single Server approach for small landscapes(up to 250 concurrent users)

HA concepts and external storage for larger landscapes

    (from 500 concurrent user)

    Configuration Remarks

There is always more than one configuration possible for a specific set of requirements.

Hence, the configurations at hand shall be considered as examples and not as the only validsolutions. Criteria for component selection are SAPS capacity, suitable price and system features, but also WDFM / EOL dates.

The ../eConfig subdirectory contains the CFREPORT for each component suggested herein You can import those into the eConfig tool and modify them according to your needs

Supported IBM i OS Versions are

IBM i V5 ( allow for some throughput degradation for POWER7 based systems)

    IBM i V6 IBM i V7

All of the suggested configurations make use of PowerVM allowing to consolidate several OSand SAP instances. PowerVM supports advanced consolidation approaches by:

Isolation of OS and SAP instances against fault conditions

Sharing compute and I/O resources using shared processor pools and Virtual I/O (VIO)capabilities of POWER serversAllowing for a more efficient hardware exploitation by higher server utilization resp.consolidated server capacity.Reducing energy requirements by consolidating multiple single servers and applicationinstances.

Assumptions for Server Sizing Sizing has been performed using SAP Quicksizer (QS)

    using the following activity distribution:

The supported user classes are all active resp. concurrentusers with above activitymix.

As an initial approximation 50% of named (i.e. SAP licensed) users can becounted as concurrent users.

User based SAP QS targets for an average server utilization of 65%. The load isgenerated by 33% interactive dialogue workload and 32 % by background tasks(printing, reporting tasks, batch).

Assumptions for Server Layout The servers and disks are sized in a way that they cover the production load of thegiven user numbers plus extra capacity for non-production SAP systems. Forthe servers the distribution is like:

For the ECC 6.0 + NetWeaver landscapes (configurations E, F and G) we assumethe following load distribution of the Production system:

100% of users use ECC 6.0 50% of these concurrently use an Enterprise Portal 30% create messages on PI (aka XI) 10% of them create concurrent workload using BI

Above capacity distributions provide guidance for PowerVM LPAR setup.

Assumptions for Disk Sizing and Layout Storage calculations are based on a well-tuned I/O behavior rather than the

required data capacity. According to SAP guideline the assumption made is that about

2 SAPS of server capacity generate 1 disk I/O per second.

Please note that the given data capacity is gross capacity! Dependent on the usage type and selected redundancy (e.g., RAID1, RAID5 etc.) the net

volume for SAP applications and data will be reduced significantly.

The offered N-Series storage devices are featured to support snap functionality. Thisreduces available net capacity, too. The configured servers are equipped with FiberChannel Adapters per default. If your customer prefers NAS-attached devices, remove FC-Adapters and add incremental Ethernet-Adapters instead. Use dedicated Ethernetsegments for N-Disk attachment.

The chart depicts the user and SAPS capacity of the suggested standard configurations. The Mix ECC+NW curve represents the module load mix outlined on previous chart, i.e. 100% concurrent user in ECC, 50% EP, 30% PI, 10% BI. Non-Production SAP Systems are not included in the SAPS required y-axis.

The slope in SAPS capacity blocks for larger configs represents about 30% SAPS gain by dynamic resource sharing among components by PowerVM virtualization.
