Your support helped save a young puppy’s life! Twist was severely sick with Parvovirus, a highly contagious and potentially deadly virus, along with a very strong respiratory infection known as Kennel Cough. Being that Twist was extremely ill, and the local shelter was becoming overcrowded, he would have been euthanized. But thanks to your support, Mackenzie’s was able to take Twist into our care, bring him back to health, and give him a safe ‘home along the way’ while he waited to find the family he deserved. In 2007, that joyous day finally arrived for Twist - and he began his new life in the arms of a wonderful ‘Forever Family!’ The Inside Scoop A Day in the Life of a L L oving oving H H omes omes WANTED! WANTED! Thank You for Making A Difference! Enjoy looking back at just a few heart warming memories you helped make possible. As you can see from the picture below, Smokey came to the Sanctuary weighing a mere 35 pounds and looked as though the wind could carry him away. Smokey was chained to a porch with no food, no water, and no shelter for over 4 weeks. The owner claimed he had forgotten about Smokey. Because of help from supporters, the staff and Doctors at The Animal Clinic, in addition to the efforts of Mackenzie’s staff and volunteers, Smokey is now on his feet looking and feeling better than we could have ever hoped. He’s at a very healthy weight of 50 pounds, has been cleared medically, and is now looking for a loving forever family to call his own. Smokey has a very loving personality, enjoys playing with toys, learning new tricks, going for walks, and loves to show affection to his human friends. Lickerish was rescued in 2005 from Hurricane Katrina, and found a new loving family on 7/14/2007. After 2 years of being overlooked, Lickerish found himself at the top of a family’s list! Like all our dogs, we were excited for his chance to go home, especially after his courageous journey through Katrina. Their meeting was love at first sight, a match made in heaven. Lickerish had found his ‘Forever Home!’ Forester came to the Sanctuary as a stray in 2005, and was adopted to his wonderful ‘Forever Family’ on 5/10/2007. After meeting 6 other dogs at the Sanctuary, the family met their last dog for the day - Forester. His delightful disposition was admired and his charm was not left unnoticed. It was very apparent that a serious bond was being developed, they were the family for him and he was the dog for them. The ‘Match’ had been Made! Don’t WE deserve a home too? Don’t WE deserve a home too? These well-behaved family companions are often overlooked by new Adopters, simply due to their age. Yet they still have so much love and life to share! Adult dogs bring many benefits, such as a calmer energy and less training demands. These dogs, and many more like them, will be forever grateful to spend the rest of their lives in a loving ‘Forever Home!’ His ‘Will’ to Live Nap-time Anyone? In Loving Memory Our sweet and loving girl, Abby, had been left behind & tied to a tree when her family moved. Abby gave lots of hugs & kisses at the Sanctuary, but due to her rough past she was uncertain about letting a new family into her life. So she let our volunteers & staff be the family she had always wanted. Abby developed a heart condition, and unexpectedly passed away. Our hearts ached to lose such a dear friend, yet we are blessed to know Abby’s last years were full of joy, love, and safety. Again, THANK YOU to everyone for helping continue our efforts of saving dogs like Smokey! Happy Families of 2007 We knew that we wanted a mature dog, and towards the top of Kathryn’s list was Buddy, a 10 year old, 100 lb. Husky/Shepherd mix. Initially, Buddy was not near the top of my list as he was very reserved at first. It was at our second visit that we met June, a 5 year old Retriever mix who was full of energy, loves to fetch, and very well trained, but Kathryn still had a strong liking for Buddy. While in a play-yard with June, we asked if Buddy might be allowed to join us, and to everyone’s surprise, they got along very well! Now that Buddy and June have been with us, our home could not be happier or more complete. We have watched our “reserved” Buddy continue to blossom as layers of personality are unfolded. With June you know exactly what’s on her mind at any time (fetch, anyone?!); she has become a loving friend with whom we anticipate many years of mutual growth. All of this would not have been possible without the mission of Mackenzie’s. The dedication they have for their dogs is demonstrated in so many ways. We are very grateful to Mackenzie’s, for it is because of them that we have our forever friends, Buddy and June!” A Letter from Home - Chuck, Kathryn, Buddy & June Buddy came to the Sanctuary in 2003 when he was 5 years old. Over the next few years, our generous supporters and loving volunteers helped us to care for Buddy as he waited to find the loving family he deserved. To everyone's delight, 2007 was Buddy’s year! He found the family he’d been dreaming of on 8/10/2007. Buddy thanks you all for giving him a second chance! Rescue dog 90655 NL.qxp:Fall November 2005 Newsletter.qxd 4/1/08 4:09 PM Page 1

I’m so excited to be just a small part of whatMackenzie’s is all about. Please don’t hesitate to come to me with questions, concerns, ideasor feedback. Lets make a difference together! Be a hero to a rescue dog - Volunteer at Mackenzie’s!

By working together we can continue to save dogs from cruelty & neglect. See Smokey’s amazing recovery on page 3.
