Porsche Club of America Los Angeles Region June, July, August 2014 Museum of Flying 2014 Concours By Joe Shubitowski When was the last time it rained in Los Angeles? Christmas? Before? Well, rain it did (for 20 minutes or so) as we did the load-in the evening before the Concours. We were hoping this was not some sort of bad omen for the following morning, and thankfully it was not. Early morning clouds part- ed quickly and glorious weath- er ensued for our inaugural Concours d’Elegance at the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica. Fifty-one Porsches from a pristine 1956 Speedster to a brand new 2015 991 Targa were parked among the vintage aircraft inside and out- side the Museum. Twenty-five judged entries included almost every vintage of the 911 series, some very special and exceptional 356s, a couple of Concours class 914s, plus a smattering of Boxsters, and a lovely 912. Display Porsches also illustrat- ed the history of Porsche mod- els for the past 60 years, but included some rare gems such as a 959 and a Carrera GT flanking the Museum main entrance, and a very rare 911L Trans Am. The vendor/sponsor area was full and lively and was just adjacent to the large corral parking area for spectator Porsches. This area was as exciting to stroll through as the actual Concours itself, as every model, vintage, and color of Porsche was on display and ever changing, as Porsches rolled in and out throughout the day. Ronald McDonald was there for pictures and was seen debat- ing the finer points of Concours class Porsches during the judging! Spectators by the hundreds came to the event to see the array of fine Porsche automo- biles, but also to visit the Museum of Flying, experience its flight simulator, and get expert docent-provided infor- mation on the workings of the Wright Brother’s Flyer replica or the Russian Yak WWII fighter. The Outdoor Grill returned as our lunch partner, and actually grilled chicken and tri-tip on- site. It was marvelous and more than 200 lunches were served. The day was topped off by great raffle prizes, the Concours awards, and finally by a birthday cake for our President David Altemus. We want to especially thank our title sponsor – Beverly Hills Porsche – for their con- tinued generous support and stellar fleet of new Porsches. The new models looked spec- tacular parked directly across from all the judged class entries and below the DC-3 monument. Also big thanks go out to the Museum of Flying management team and staff led by Dan and Steve. It was truly a team effort to pull off the Concours at a brand new venue, and we could not have achieved the success and the huge crowd without their unwavering support and mar- keting efforts. Thanks as well to all our intrepid volunteers who helped with registration, parking, car placement, lunch, judging, and on and on. Finally, the Concours could never happen without all the PCA Zone 8 judges led by Michael Dolphin. Bravo to Michael and his team for a very smooth Concours. We all look forward to the 2015 Concours d’Elegance at Museum of Flying!!
