PREPARING THE SUBSTRATE

The correct preparation of the substrate is the right start for a successful installation. Unfortunately, tight work schedules very often compromise the proper performance of this task.

Kiesel provides a versatile selection of surface preparation products to deal with almost all of today’s job-site situations in a reliable, time-saving and economical manner. These materials help you at this crucial step of instal lation, providing extremely fast setting characteristics with outstanding work-ability and a reliable performance even under the most demanding circumstances.

■ Fast setting primersPriming the substrate before applying cement-based mortars has several benefits:– to improve the bond strength between mortar and

substrate, especially on non-absorbent substrates– to conduct a well balanced curing by avoiding ”burn-out”

of cement-based products on highly absorbent substrates– preparation of difficult to adhere substrates– to stop high water content, for example in below-grade

environments, with Okapox GF as a moisture barrier.

You shouldn’t have to spend endless time in this step of installation. That’s why we developed Okatmos® UG 30. This acrylic dispersion primer, with a drying time of 20–30 minutes, is probably one of the fastest on the market. This product is another testament to Kiesel’s commitment to developing user-friendly products with the health of the installer as a top priority. We developed this non-corrosive, water-based, sol-vent-free product, which gives you the performance of the old, unhealthy systems, without the corrosive chemicals and harmful fumes.

■ Patching and levelingWhen time is an issue, Kiesel is the prime choice. Our range of fast-setting products have a very special feature:the self-drying, cement-based matrix which bonds the water within itself. The high polymer content and the perfect blend of fine cements still minimize tension. No cracks, even under high stress and in thick layers will lead to long-lasting, professional results. You save time, money and extra trips to the construction site.

■ Cost savingThe most economical way of leveling larger areas is working with automated mixing pumps. Kiesel works closely with vari-ous manufacturers of mixing pumps to offer products with the right performance. In single- and multi-day seminars the Kiesel customers can greatly further their theoretical and practical training. In the early 90’s in Esslingen- Berkheim, Wolfgang Kiesel created the seminar center now known as the ”think tank”. A place where customers learn about product in-formation and modern installation in construction through short training programs and seminars. Comprehensive seminar programs with expert speakers are offered both in Esslingen as well as the offi ce in Tangermunde. The following references are available on the Processing of the installation materials observed by Kiesel:

■ 1. Substrates Basic requirement for a damage-free installation of tile and stone flooring with thin-bed mortars or adhesives is to verify the nature of the substrate prior to preparation and installation work. According to DIN 18352 and DIN 18332, paragraph 3.1.3, The contractor must verify the suitability of the substrate and consider the implementation of the installation work. In particular, concerns are attributed to:

– cracks in the substrate (settling cracks) – efflorescence – missing, or insufficient inclinations specified on the

design documents – larger bumps than in accordance with DIN 18201 and

18202 Part 1, 4 and 5 permitted – very smooth surfaces – damp surfaces – highly absorbent surfaces – frozen or oily surfaces – coarse imperfections

Slight bumps can also be leveled with Servofix Thin-bed mortar, Servocret or Servoplan self levelers. Please respect the recommended amount of water when mixing the fillers. Follow specified water ratio recommendation when mixing self leveling compounds. The substrates for the instillation of tiles, slabs and natural stone coverings must meet the following maximum residual moisture requirements:

Gypsum plaster <1.0 CM / mass%

Cement screeds < 2.0 CM / mass%

Cement screeds with warm water underfloor heating < 2.0 CM / mass%

Calcium sulfate screeds and Calcium sulfate-leveling floor < 0.5 CM / mass%

Calcium sulfate screeds and Calcium sulfate flowing screeds with Warm water underfloor heating < 0.3 CM / mass%

Plasters of mortar groups II (cement plaster) and III (cement plaster) must be 28 days old with dry air.

■ 2. Special or specific substrates– Substrate heating is on before installation. When used on

heated screeds please pay attention to the appropriate standards and codes and respect the above information. Before the installation work, turn down the heating (max. surface temperature 15 ° C).

– Calcium sulfate and calcium sulfate flowing screeds should not be subjected to moisture. Calcium sulfate

flowing screeds are grinded, brushed off and vacuumed before the installation (unless otherwise specified by the binding Manufacturer). These substrates are primed with Okamul GG, Okatmos® UG 30 or Okapox GF. Installation: For all necessary adhesive layer thicknesses over 5 mm on calcium sulphate screeds when using nor-mal hardening installation materials, prime with Okapox GF or Okatmos® UG 30. Compensate irregularities by adjusting the flooring installation and allow to dry or use Servoplan/Servofix as fillers to max. 10 mm layer thick-ness.

– Cast asphalt concrete (minimum hardness class IC10 at heated screeds or screeds on insulation or Installation materials for ceramic tiles and natural stones IC15 for bonded screeds or screeds on separating layer) must be sanded and may be primed with Okatmos® UG 30 or with Okapox GF or Okamul PU-V under natural stones.

– Situ concrete to DIN 1045 must be at least 6 months old and have a wettable surface (Exception: Servo light, Servo Flex K-Plus SuperTec, Servoflex K-schnell SuperTec and Servoflex Trio SuperTec depending on the concrete thickness at least 3 months, with Servo Light S2 SuperTec at least 28 days).

– All concrete must be at least 3–6 months old.

– Wood substrates have to be dry (moisture content less than 10 %) and thoroughly fixed to the substrate (min-imum spacing between screws 15” (40 cm)). Minimum thickness on floors 1” (25 mm), ¾” (19 mm) on walls. Tongue and groove have to be glued. Allow particle board primed with Okatmos® UG 30 to dry for at least 24 hours. Use Okaphone uncoupling system is recommended.

– For installation over interior existing wall or floor tile make sure the surface is free of release agents and con-taminants. This is achieved by a thorough cleaning with Okamul GR and then priming with Okatmos® UG 30.

– There is a risk with installing over oil paints, plastic or waterproof plasters emulsion paints to wall areas. The moisture between the covering and the wall will cause the paint to soften and the coverings will peel off. On stable surfaces, tile only after previous deep cleaning, sanding followed by priming with Okatmos® UG 30.

– Old flooring adhesive residues must be removed mech-anically. (Bitumen adhesives to 80%). Prime the area with Okatmos® UG 30. Water-soluble sulfite liquor adhesives should be fast primed with Okapox GF. Remove all resi-dues of old adhesives when working with natural stone.

– When installing Red Sand stone limit sizing of the tile to the manufacturer recommendations.

– The respective substrates must be able to accommodate the intended surfacing material and suitable to withstand its subsequent stress.

■ 3. Installation TipsFor setting and laying with the thin bed method DIN 18157 refer to parts 1, 2 and 3. Clean mineral screeds with a


scrubbing brush. It is important to ensure that with each of the substrates, the correct primer is used. Follow previ-ously installed control and expention joints. These shall not be bridged. When installing ceramic tiles on retractable substrates, make sure to respect its limitations by provid-ing an appropriate amount of expansion joints. When apply-ing the thin-bed mortar in DIN 18157, use a notched trowel with the corresponding tooth depth. On the exterior and in highly stressed substrates where there are a large amount of surfacing material to be installed; possibly use the com-bined method (buttering-floating) and / or apply a special mortar such as Servo flex Trio SuperTec.

Large format covering materials are generally laid in a combined method (buttering-floating).

■ 4. Guidelines for grouting:Keep the joint width in mind when selecting the grout, thin-ner joints require less maintenance. For forming sub-strates, be sure to have the proper amount of expansion joints as well. We recommend the application of a sample surface, especially in the cases of natural stone.

The following is to avoid staining:Ceramic tiles in the thin-bed method: With a normal hard-ening system, wait 12–24 hours before grouting (room temperature +20 ° C and 50% relative humidity).

Ceramic tiles in the thick bed process: The mortar must be dry before grouting. For both installa-tion methods, the drying process is very dependent on the respective sites and Weather conditions.

The following will shorten the drying time:– absorbent, porous substrate– highly absorbent tiles or broken tile edges (ceramic /

earthenware) – dry weather – Good air circulation

The following will extend the dehydration:– non-absorbent substrate, non absorbent tiles or tile

edges (stoneware) – wet and cool weather – poor air circulation

In particularly wet site conditions, using colored grouting, blotchiness and efflorescence can be visible. Moisture from the mortar can penetrate the joints and leave a deposit on the surface. These results are not caused from the joint material, but by the variety of site-related factors so a guarantee for the Individual case cannot be given. Thor-oughly scrubbing and washing joints once they have dried using certain acidic cleaning agents have been proven effective in these cases. If you are cleaning walls, be sure to go from top to bottom, avoiding the accumulation of water puddles.

■ 5. General informationThe times listed in the product descriptions refer generally to +20 ° C and a relative humidity of 60%. Higher temper-atures reduce while lower temperatures extend it accord-
