Many of those plastic soda bottles yourecycle in a single-stream curbside contain-er, perhaps, will find new life as high-qualityGeorgia carpet.

Companies such as Waste Managementand Waste Connections take it from yourcurbside recycling bin, then other compa-nies such as Tennessee American RecyclingLLC, prepare it for a “bailed” path toAsheville, N.C., for further sorting andpreparation before reaching the PeachState.

“We use No. 1 PET plastic,” said JennyCross, global sustainability director withMohawk Industries, Inc. based in Dalton,Ga., about what amounts to “around threebillion bottles a year that come in” to beconverted into carpet.

Cross said Mohawk is one of “three of usin the industry” among major carpet manu-facturers “that recycle bottles” into carpet.Mohawk receives plastic bottles at itsSummerville, Ga., recycling plant “typicallybailed up. We get them from all over NorthAmerica, we’ll purchase from all over.”

“We do another sort of them because

sometimes you’ll get cans in a bail or you’llget a milk jug, which is not what we’re look-ing for,” Cross added. “As well as the colorseparation.”

“The color you have in a Mountain Dewbottle is green, that doesn’t do very well foroff-white or beige carpet. So we’ll separatethat out and put that in a darker color.”

Clear plastic bottles “can go into any-thing, clear will take any color,” Cross said.“It’s those that already have some color thatare a bit restricted in the darker shade.

“Then we’ll chop everything up … itmakes it in to what we call flake, so it’s littleflakes,” Cross added. “And it goes into awasher at that point to clean. It goes into ahot water bath.”

“A bottle has three different plastics in it:the bottle itself, then you have the label andthen you have the cap. We have to separatethose out.”

Though all three components are “groundup at the same time,” the carpet-makingPET bottle portion, upon being washed, “willgo to the bottom,” Cross said. “And every-thing else floats to the top.”

“Organic” has become a hot topic, amarketing campaign and a groceryshopping key word in recent years, butcommercial vegetable extension spe-cialist at The University of Tennessee,Annette Wszelaki, wants consumers toeducate them-selves on what theword reallymeans.

And on what itcould mean fortheir own back-yards.

“People have aperception that itcan be more nutritious and better foryou to eat organic. And I use the word‘perception’ because that’s not neces-sarily the case,” Wszelaki said.

Grocery store studies of organic ver-sus conventionally grown fruits and veg-etables often have conflicting resultsbecause so many other factors influ-ence those foods — where it wasgrown, how far it traveled, how long it

sat in the grocery store, the type of soilit grew in, and the variety of each veg-etable.

“There is that perception, but thereis no good evidence one way or another. It’s extremely hard to do a study andcompare the two,” Wszelaki said.

One of the best ways to eat healthyfood — and to control what’s in or onyour fruits and vegetables — is to growit yourself.

Wszelaki said she’s seen a resurgencein backyard gardens, due both to therecession — as people look for inex-pensive ways to acquire healthy food —and the local food movement.

“You know, everybody used to have agarden. And now people are comingback around to that because they missthat connection to their food,” Wszelakisaid.

“There’s a lot of satisfaction in grow-ing your own garden. You can go outand say, ‘I grew this tomato from a tinyseed.’ It’s very satisfying,” she added.

Growing food at home likely isn’t afad, she said, since it builds upon thelocal food movement and the desiremany have to know where their food

comes from. In addition, growing foodat home means knowing exactly what is— or is not — in it.

“And we see more and more foodsafety outbreaks than we ever didbefore, and that’s partially because ofthe global nature of our food systems,”Wszelaki said.

Organic gardening at home differsfrom conventional gardening in that itdoesn’t rely on chemical fertilizers, pes-ticides or herbicides.

That typically means no traditional20-20-20 supplements providing nitro-gen, phosphate and potassium toplants. Instead, plants are supplement-ed with compost and natural sources ofthose minerals, such as bone or bloodmeal or the like.

Pest management might include pes-ticides that have been approved fororganic use, or might include biologicalcontrols, such as Bacillus thuringiensis,a microbial insecticide Wszelaki saidshe uses in UT garden, to kill caterpil-lars on cabbages.

“It’s very safe, but it stops those

caterpillars from feeding on vegeta-bles,” Wszelaki said.

Herbicides traditionally aren’t usedin organic gardening because they onlyslow weed growth, rather than stop it.

But in organically-accepted herbi-cides, high-acetic acid vinegar is anexample.

“It burns everything down, but then itwill recover. But you certainly wouldn’twant to get that in your eye or anything, because it could be just as harsh assomething else,” Wszelaki said.

In general, organic gardening takes aholistic look at your garden as a whole, rather than on using chemicals to pro-vide one benefit at a time.

Wszelaki said cover cropping — thepractice of planting a crop such as

clover or rye grass over soil that other-wise would be bare between cash cropplantings — is one example.

“You might plant it to prevent ero-sion, if you’re in an area with erosionproblems, but in the meantime it willprevent soil erosion ... it’ll also chokeout other weeds ... when you till itunder, it will improve the organic mat-ter in your soil,” Wszelaki said.

Cover crops also can bring in benefi-cial insects, and cover crops that arepart of the legume family fix nitrogeninto the soil.

“All of those things overlap, becausein an organic system, you’re not spray-ing a fungicide, you’re doing these otherproduction techniques that don’t just doone thing, they do a multitude ofthings,” Wszelaki said.

Another example is crop rotation, ornot planting the same vegetables, or

vegetables in the same family, in thesame spot year after year. Crop rotationcuts down on diseases and insect infes-tations.

“So you have tomatoes in there oneyear, and you rotate out of the tomatofamily the next year, and you might havepumpkins,” Wszelaki said.

Pumpkins have different root systemsthat work the soil differently, feed ondifferent nutrients and cover the soil, preventing weeds. The next year, thesame bed might be ready for a crop suchas carrots, which grows differently thaneither pumpkins or tomatoes.

“All of these things fit together, andit’s really a holistic system. It’s not amagic bullet. It’s intentionally doingthings to build your soil, attract benefi-cial insects and just get your system tonaturally work together,” Wszelaki said.
