through fundraisers over the past three years and some generous gifts by parishioners, each singer’s expenses will be partially subsidized. No funds from the St. Mark’s operating budget are used. As the choirs prepare the large amount of music necessary for the residency, they will be providing some “previews” of the repertoire on Sunday mornings this summer. Additionally, on Sunday morning, July 11th we will present the exact service (using the liturgy from the English Prayer Book) which will be done at Ely at the Sunday Eucharist. Sunday afternoon, July 11th at 4:00 pm, the choirs will offer a Solemn Evensong prior to our departure the following Thursday. We thank you for your encouragement, prayers and your financial support. If you have any questions about our residency, please call or write me. Ed Rieke can be contacted at 210-226-2426 ext. 129 or [email protected].

Sabbatical Journey IISabbatical Journey II aula and I are back in the USA after a wonderful journey to Scotland. The highlight of the trip was our pilgrimage

to the island of Iona that proved to be the sacred place we expected. Getting to Iona makes one feel like you are on the

edge of the planet as two ferries are necessary to reach the island, plus a rather treacherous single-lane car trip through the Isle of Mull. Iona calls the visitor to enter stories of great faithfulness to Christ that inspire and cause one to reflect on one’s own discipleship. The story that dominates the island is that of Columba and his monks who established a monastery in 563. What I found intriguing is that instead of cloistering themselves on this beautiful island they conducted missions to the Picts in the north, to the Anglo-Saxons in Northumbria, and throughout Europe, reaching as far east as western Russia. Martyrs Bay holds painful memories of sixty-eight monks who were mercilessly slaughtered at the hands of the Norse invaders in 806. With that memory in mind, the Iona community has sought to be an ecumenical Christian community devoted to bringing together work and worship, prayer and politics, and the sacred and the secular, ideas that have shaped our common life at St. Mark’s. The island was a place to journal, pray in solitude and silence, and walk among the sheep that graze on the hillside. I was always glad when the tourist for the day left the island because a deep calm entered the atmosphere. As we boarded the ferry for the Isle of Mull, I was a bit sad to leave Iona and gave thanks for ‘thin places’ - a term for places where God’s presence is experienced. As we continued our trip by car on the left side of the road through Scotland, we were struck by the beauty of the country. Such beauty is always a reminder of our creator God. We flew back to New York City and had another visit with our son Brian who lives in Yonkers. The next morning we took the train back to Alexandria, VA where we picked up our car and are now taking some vacation time on the beaches of South Carolina and Georgia. Once back in Texas, we will stay at the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin where I will resume my studies with one of the church’s great consultants, Peter Steinke. I have asked him to help me integrate the mission of the church with my biblical work on the cross that I did earlier in my sabbatical at Virginia Theological Seminary. I have been able to enter this extended Sabbath due to my great confidence in the clergy and staff at St. Mark’s, plus the lay leadership that is so very dedicated. Sabbath is many things but what has occurred to me is that it is living very much in the present and reflecting on life at a very deep level. One of my constant reflections is on the vibrant ministry of St. Mark’s and how blessed I am to be a part of this great church. I look forward to seeing you after the July 4th weekend and pray that you too will have Sabbath time this summer.

ou may remember that the priests’ offices on the 4th floor of the Parish House

received flooding damage during a recent rainstorm. The water entered the building

through a 12 inch hole that was hidden from view by a downspout on the exterior wall of the building. Bill Edwards notified our insurance company of a potential claim. Ruby and Bill, along with a representative of Ford, Powell, Carson Architects, began overseeing the remediation of the offices. We expect to have a maximum expense of $10,000.00 (the amount of our deductible) associated with this claim, although the roofing company may defray this cost if their records indicate any responsibility for the damage.

Over the past few weeks, the office spaces have been dehydrated to prevent future mold concerns and the replacement flooring has been ordered. Although the offices were previously carpeted, the large “minimum order” requirements for carpet made impractical the replacement of the damaged flooring with new carpet. A less expensive hard-surface flooring which has been used in other areas of the church will be installed instead.

An engineer hired by the insurance company will review the damage later this month and then we will begin the repair work which is expected to take a few more weeks to complete.

Altar flowers are now tax deductible and should be appearing on the quarterly church statements that the church sends out to parishioners. People can set up an annual donation in memory of or in honor of someone, and will get a postcard reminder to send a donation around the time they want the flowers. This, of course, can be cancelled at any time. Checks are to be sent to the church--and marked Sunday altar flowers. What a lovely way to honor a loved one and add beauty to the Sunday service.

YOUTH NEWS Many Bodies. One Spirit.

St. Mark’s Youth Efforts Paid Off with an S.O.W

The second annual St. Mark’s youth ministry Summer Outreach Weekend (S.O.W.) proved to be yet another unforgettable weekend for the youth involved in the weekend as well as for the entire parish here at St. Mark’s. The two night lock-in, June 4th through June 6th, provided the youth group with an outreach opportunity at the San Antonio Food Bank, a practical real-world view of the city we live in and the community St. Mark’s supports. The S.O.W. actually began six weeks ago with the Youth Food Bank Fund Drive. Youth were challenged, in part by very generous and anonymous benefactors, to raise funds to assist the SAFB in their mission. For their efforts each dollar contributed would be matched by our benefactors and every dollar direct from a youth or child would be quadrupled.

The youth took this challenge head on. From the Waahoos on Sundays in the courtyard to setting up programs at restaurants and stores, the kids really wanted to do their part to make a difference. In the end, our amazing group with the support of the St. Mark’s community, was able to present a check to San Antonio Food Bank representatives, Monica Vorrego and Erica Benevides, for $17,559,49 during the Sunday service on May 30th. While speaking, Ms. Benevides expressed her heartfelt thanks to the youth group and was excited to say that the money presented would create more than 120,000 meals for hungry residents of San Antonio and Southwest Texas. After some fun and games at the church on Friday night and Saturday morning, the youth group volunteered their time

Saturday afternoon in the warehouse of the food bank. Twenty youth group participants and five adult volunteers sorted through thousands of donated cans, inspecting each of the roughly ten thousand cans individually for rust, dents, and punctures. By the end of the four hour shift, the St. Mark's youth group was proud to say that they had salvaged over $10,000 worth of food for needy San Antonio residents; food that would have otherwise just been thrown away if it wasn't for their volunteer efforts. After the volunteer shift had ended, the coordinator at the food bank informed the group that the food they sorted would go to a program called, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families

(Continued on page 7)

(TANF). In this program, residents who meet the qualifications through SAISD will receive fifty pounds of donated food each week for each family member in the household. It is each food bank’s representative and each member of the youth group's hope that there will be no more hunger in the San Antonio school district, and the St. Mark's community is dedicated to this goal for years to come. A special thank you is owed to our adult volunteers, Ginny Check, Patrice Oliver, and Walter Goodwin, who helped transport and oversee the youth on site. The time and effort of the youth group did not go without a reward of course. The group departed the food bank and headed to the house of Harris Stephens for burgers, ice cream, and a refreshing backyard swim to escape the 100 degree temps. Thank you very much to David and Shannon Stephens for opening their home to us. The group was met with another surprise upon arrival back at church Saturday night. From 8pm to 10pm, the youth group took over the three floors of the Parish House and played capture the flag LASER TAG! Although the St. Mark's youth group certainly knows how to have fun, this weekend was a prominent example of how the youth chose to step up in the life of the parish. The slogan on the back of our T-shirts, "Many Bodies, One Spirit" isn't just a slogan, it is the group motto. Coupled with the St. Mark's mission statement, "We are a downtown church, committed to the gospel, accountable to each other; loving Christ and making him known," the youth group at St. Mark's is dedicated to service to youth group members, church members, and members of the community.

As the youth ministers, we want to express our deepest gratitude for the continuing support the St. Mark's parish has shown our young leaders. Without the support and encouragement from such great members of the church, these teens would not be so excited about helping out our community year after year and growing into great young adults who will always remember that they are a member of a church family, and the family of God that will always remember, we are, "Many Bodies, One Spirit."

Interviewer: What is your full name? Mary Esther: My full name is Mary Esther Cano. Interviewer: Where were you born and raised? Mary Esther: San Antonio, TX. My mom was from Mexico and my dad was from Seguin. Interviewer: Where did you go to school? What was your favorite subject in school? Mary Esther: I went to Fox Tech High School. I guess Math was my favorite subject. Interviewer: Where do you attend church services? Mary Esther: I don’t ever really get to attend church services because I work on Sunday in the nursery at Christ Church. (Smiling and laughing she says, “I have no excuse for the other days!”) But when I get the chance I love to go to Bethesda Christian Church. I was raised in the Pentecostal church. Interviewer: Do you have children? Do you have any grandchildren? Mary Esther: I have three children- two girls, one boy. They are all still at home with me. Karie Ester Martinez is my oldest and she is 26. Tracy Marie Martinez is 24 and is about to make me a grandma to a baby girl sometime in early October. And my son, Eric Isidro Martinez, is 17. This coming year will be his last year at Holy Cross. Interviewer: Tell us about what you

do at the St. Mark’s Nursery. Mary Esther: I am the floater here at the St. Mark’s Parents’ Day Out. That means I work in all of the classrooms and I get to take care of all ages. I really enjoy all of them. Interviewer: How long have you worked here at St. Marks’? Mary Esther: I have worked here since September, so almost 9 months. That makes me the newest employee here. I love to work. Interviewer: Do you have any family members that work here? Do you have family members involved in any other ministries here? Mary Esther: Oh yes, my sister Rebecca Ibarra, my niece Nancy Torres, and Nancy’s daughter Brianna Torres all work with the Nursery and Parent’s Day Out programs. Interviewer: Fun questions...What is your shoe size? Any pets? Mary Esther: I wear a five and a half- sometimes a six. It depends on the style. I don’t have any pets, but my daughter has a dog at home. It’s a medium sized dog- an inside dog. His name is Pepe. Interviewer: What is your favorite book? Music? Food? Mary Esther: I don’t really like to read all that much. Lately I have been watching a movie called August Rush- it’s good. I don’t really have one favorite song. I listen to a little of everything. It depends on my mood. My favorite food is steak and I have to have beans, hot sauce, and guacamole with my steaks! I don’t

really have a favorite restaurant, I like to cook at home. Interviewer: What do you like best about working at the St. Mark’s Nursery? Mary Esther: The best part about working at St. Mark’s is that we all really help each other. I like to work and help others, too. Interviewer: Tell us something about your family. What was the hardest thing you ever had to do as a parent? Mary Esther: The hardest thing I ever had to do as a parent was raise my three children all by myself. But I have been able to accomplish that and even spoil them a little, too. Then she laughed and said- a little, no actually a lot! They have a lot to be thankful for. Interviewer: What is the best advice your parent(s) ever gave to you? Mary Esther: My mom always used to tell me to treat others well. What you do will come back to you. Interviewer: If you could only give your child one toy, what would it be? Mary Esther: Well I have always given my kids educational toys. It should be something that they can learn from.
