Primary Service AreaEagle Pass is located on the Rio Grande River in Maverick County, Texas. It is

approximately 142 miles southwest of San Antonio and serves as a major point

of entry into the Mexican state of Coahuila. With a population of over 50,000,

Eagle Pass has been identified as one of the fastest growing cities in the state,

with more people arriving each day to share in a steadily growing economy and

bask in the beautiful weather. Eagle Pass is the official sister city of Piedras

Negras, found just across the river in Mexico. There, the rapidly-increasing

population numbers over 260,000.

Like most border cities, Eagle Pass boasts a strong Hispanic heritage, which

enriches the community with culture and a unique international flavor.

Fort Duncan Park

A Fascinating History. A Bright Future.First established as a military outpost in 1849, Eagle Pass has played afascinating role throughout American history. During the Mexican War, thegrounds were used not only to house soldiers, but also to scout Indians. In the Texas revolution, it is said, Santa Anna and his army entered Texas here en route to The Battle of The Alamo. And during the Civil War, Confederatesoldiers used the site as a base from which to export cotton.

Today, Eagle Pass clearly has evolved beyond its “badlands” beginnings. It is a thriving city with excellent education, outstanding healthcare and a quicklydeveloping infrastructure. In fact, the Eagle Pass Independent School Districtenjoys an attendance rate of over 95%. And as the benefits of the NorthAmerican Free Trade Agreement continue to take shape, the future ofEagle Pass gets brighter every day!

Piedras Negras - The Sister CityIn 1850, the Mexican government established a military garrisonjust across the river from Eagle Pass. Soon, settlers from nearby rivervillages flocked to the area — and founded the city now known asPiedras Negras. Retaining the feel of Old Mexico, Piedras Negras isan exciting city, with authentic Mexican curio shops, restaurants,bullfights and a vibrant club scene. Among its many famousaccomplishments, Piedras Negras is the birthplace of the Nacho, andserves up thousands each year to tourists from all around the world.Together, the port of Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras serve as aninternational gateway, connecting Canada to the Americas . . . Political StructureEagle Pass has a council-manager form of government. Themayor and four council representatives (elected at-large) serve as the legislative body.

Business/EconomyAs Eagle Pass is a principal port of entry into Mexico, retailssales continue to dominate its economy. However, in recentyears, considerable gains have occurred in wholesale trade as well as in healthcare, transportation, construction and themanufacturing sectors. Major industries include: apparel/textile,automotive, chemical processing, electronics, food processing,metal fabrication, plastics and telecommunications.

Tourism also plays a key role in the economic landscape. TheEagle Pass-Piedras Negras communities participate in the TwoNation Vacation Program, designed to boost travel betweenTexas, Mexico and the Americas. The sister cities connect USHighway 57 with Mexico Highway 57, providing an internationalgateway to Monclova, Mexico City, scenic portions of the SierraMadres and other popular destinations.

Eagle Pass continues to be a leader in Texas’ agriculture. It is host to a 40,000-acre irrigated winter garden region — and is the number one inland port for the import and export oflivestock between the United States and Mexico. EducationThe Eagle Pass Independent School District includes threekindergartens/preschools, 13 elementary schools, two juniorhigh schools, two high schools and an alternative educationcenter. In addition, private and parochial schools areavailable at the elementary, junior high and high schoollevels. For students pursuing a college education, Eagle Passoffers two fine schools.

Southwest Texas Junior College. Founded in 1946,the college serves eleven counties in Southwest Texas,maintaining campuses in Eagle Pass, Uvalde, Del Rio andCrystal City. Students can earn several degrees includingAssociate in Arts, Associate in Science and Associate inApplied Science. Pre-Nursing/Medical Technologist classesalso are offered.

Sul Ross State University/Rio Grande College. Located on the campus of Southwest Texas Junior College, theuniversity provides both bachelor’s and master’s levelprograms. Degrees and majors include Bachelor of Arts inEnglish and History, Bachelor of Science in Mathematicsand Criminal Justice, Master of Business Administration inGeneral Business and Master of Education in Counseling,Elementary or Secondary Education.

TaxesThe state of Texas has no personal or corporate income tax. The state sales taxis currently 6.25%, while the current county sales tax is 1%. Within the city ofEagle Pass, there is a 8.25% sales tax on most retail purchases — and theweighted property tax is presently 2.18% per $100 of assessed value. To attractnew business, officials have instituted a variety of pro-growth business policies.Plus, Eagle Pass and Piedras Negras work to provide a wide array of resourceassistance to corporations moving to the area.
