Ten stand-alone gen-sets wereinstalled. The site required a simple-to-use control that could be operatedlocally and remotely from a separatelocation. The installation also requireda module that could be programmedvia a PC and could display basicengine information for manualrecording by the workers on site.

The DSE3110was selected due toits advanced design, compactenclosure and ability to clearly showengine information on its LCDdisplay. The 3110 also meetsIP65/NEMA12 ratings, making itideal for harsh industrialenvironments.

A recent project was developed toimprove emergency standby powerfacilities at hundreds of Vodacombase stations throughout Tanzania,ensuring uninterrupted networkcoverage and reducingmaintenance costs.

The project managers chose theDSE7320 Automatic Mains (Utility)Failure control module as it offeredcomprehensive remote control andmonitoring features and a powerfulrange of engine protections thatmatched demanding industryrequirements. The sites alsorequired dual mutual standby andauto voltage sensing, which theDSE7000 series offers as standard.

All base stations were fitted with twogen-sets (with DSE7320s) operatingin standby mode, using remotemonitoring by RS232 and GPRScommunications via the Oracleserver at Vodacom’s head office.

Four gen-sets were set up withDSE7510 controllers as anautomatic load-sharing system withload-demand scheme. Theload-demand scheme allows sets tocome on-line in a chosen sequence,when load demand reaches pre-determined levels. Each controllerwill monitor the bus and will comeon (or off) line according to thepriority order.

The load-demand scheme is used toensure engines are not run tomaximum capacity for long periodsof time, leading to reduced enginestress and a longer life. Changes tothe load level settings can easily bemade via a PC and DSE user-friendlyWindows® based software. Changesto the priority sequence and otherparameter settings can also bemade in the same way.

DSE’s Marine Load-SharingControllers were chosen to controlthree existing generators as part ofthe ship’s major refurbishmentprogramme.

The generators previously operatedindependently on a split bus system,placing uneven loads on theengines, leading to engine stressand reducing engine life.

The generators were retro-fittedwith DSE5510M and DSE5560controllers. This enabled the load tobe shared equally between the gen-sets, keeping engine stress to aminimum. The use of a DSE5560allowed power from the ship’s mainengine to be monitored so that theship’s electrical load could betransferred to the generators whenrequired.

The DSE ethernet controller is connected to the internet and all DSE controlmodules that are on site. The ethernet controller requires a fixed internal IPaddress that can be configured to be visible over the internet. Once the IPaddress is accessible over the internet, sites can be viewed from anyinternet connection in the world.

The system has been designed to display information on a maximum of 16gen-sets and four mains (utilities) or 24 gen-sets with no mains (utilities).The software is easy to set up and DSE controllers can easily be added tothe system using the software’s intuitive ‘Add Controller’ page.

The ethernet device includes RS232 and RS485 communications ports.The data taken from the DSE controllers is refreshed every 1-11 seconds(depending on connection speed).
