The All Share Price Index dipped 23.3 points to close at 6,226.1 (-0.4%) whilst the S&P SL20 Index also dipped 17.6 points to close at 3,424.1 (-0.5%). The total turnover was LKR1,297.4 mn (USD9,934.2k) vs. 12-month average daily turnover of LKR830.1 mn (USD6,356.0k) whilst the volume traded for the day was 62,860.2k against the 12-month average daily volume of 42,259.8k. Top traded counters were Seylan Bank (Non-Voting) LKR530.5 mn (USD4,062.0k, +0.8%), Expolanka Holdings LKR238.9 mn (USD1,829.2k, -1.0%), Lanka IOC LKR93.2 mn (USD713.6k, 0.0%), Commercial Bank LKR74.3 mn (USD568.9k, -0.8%) and John Keells Holdings LKR28.3 mn (USD216.7k, -0.4%).

The market turnover exceeded LKR1 bn for the fourth consecutive day on the back of large trades in selective counters. The leading banking counter, Seylan Bank (Non-Voting) single handedly contributed c.41% to the market turnover driven by a c.7% stake transfer (near 12 mn shares) from one of the leading shareholders. Meanwhile Expolanka Holdings which has been witnessing renewed interest for the last 2 weeks saw 16.5 mn shares changing hands in today’s market on the back of foreign buying whilst locals were on the selling side. Further seeing renewed activity was Lanka IOC with 1.4 mn shares changing hands on the back of institutional investor participation. Moreover the large caps, John Keells Holdings and Commercial Bank also saw activity mainly from foreign institutions. A net foreign inflow was resulted for the day where foreign purchases amounted to LKR326.3 mn (USD2,490.8k), whilst foreign sales amounted to LKR279.7 mn (USD2,135.1k).

Selective institutions were active in today’s market with the largest revenue generator accounting for the lions share in the market. Due to the large caps shedding ground, the main index saw a decline of 23.3 points. Seylan Bank (Non-Voting) saw 12 mn shares changing hands at LKR40.00 in addition to another 1 mn shares in excess trading in the market, thus moving the counter to close at LKR40.30. Expolanka Holdings which has enticed buying interest during the concluded 7 trading days has seen near 64 mn shares (c.3% of the counter) in total being traded during the said period, as against its 12-month average daily share volume of 1.2 mn shares. Thus the renewed activity has driven the counter from LKR9.50 to LKR10.30 during the same period. However the counter witnessed slight selling pressure today mainly among the widespread investor fraternity, where the counter shed ground marginally from its 52-week high of LKR10.80 on Friday to today’s high of LKR10.50. Meanwhile the energy player, Lanka IOC saw a block trade of 1.4 mn shares at LKR43.00 before reaching an intra-day high of LKR43.30, just below its 52-week high of LKR44.00. Further active in today’s market was Textured Jersey which continued to see upward momentum from yesterday, where the counter slowly climbed to LKR18.70. Meanwhile it recorded an intra-day high of LKR18.90 hovering around its 52-week high of LKR19.00 (recorded yesterday). Meanwhile on the retail front, counters such as FLC Holdings, HVA Foods and Raigam Wayamba Salterns traded largely in today’s market.

Daily News Update

Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka up 39.5-pct in April Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka rose 39.5 percent from a year earlier to 112,631 in April 2014 led by India, China, Britain and Russia, data from the state tourism promotion office showed. In the first four months of the year arrivals were up 27.6 percent to 534,132.

Arrivals from Western Europe surged 47.9 percent to 37,369 in April with UK arrivals rising 59.6 percent to 12,380. Visitors from Germany rose 59.6 percent to 8,137 and those from France rose 43.2 percent to 5,970.

South Asian tourists rose 28 percent to 27,954 with Indian visitors up 35.8 percent to 17,192. Maldives was up 10.2 percent to 6,860 and Pakistan was up 36.5 percent to 2,764.

East Asian visitors rose 61.4 percent to 18,416. China with Hong Kong surged 170 percent to 8,005 and Japan rose 90 percent to 2,368.

So far this year Chinese visitors are up 135 percent to 36,803.

Sri Lanka's 2014 economic growth upgraded to 7.0-pct by IMF 06 May, 2014 10:11:07 May 06, 2014 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's economic growth forecast for 2014 has been upgraded to 7.0 percent by the International Monetary Fund in its latest regional outlook for the Asia Pacific region, up from 6.5 percent in December. The 6.5 percent growth for 2015 published following a post program monitoring mission has been kept unchanged.

Sri Lanka has ended a 2.5 billion US dollar IMF bailout program it entered in 2009, following a balance of payments trouble, but entered another one in 2011/2012 by trying to subsidize energy with state bank credit at a time when overall credit growth was already high.
