6.0 CBOC Prototype Equipment Layouts

Overview Th e equipment lists for the each of the CBOC prototypes were generated in the VA Space and Equipment Planning System (SEPS). Th is system produces the Project Room Contents Lists (PRCR), or room by room equipment lists, that represent the most likely set of equipment for each room type identifi ed in the Program For Design (PFD). Th e lists have been generated and refi ned from a combination of sources such as the VA Technical Information Library (TIL), any current applicable VA Design Guides, and the Interim Design Guide for PACT. Additionally, these equipment lists and subsequent equipment layouts have been discussed and reviewed with the VA Steering Group for PACT as well as receiving input from attending members of the VA CBOC Prototype meetings and charrettes.

Some of the general exam spaces have been included as enlarged plans to better understand how they are impacted be the column grid or component design as well as to review the layout based on the developing PACT Criteria. Th e enlarged plans provided in Section 6.1 include the typical exam room, women’s health exam room, procedure room and typical consult room. For all other room layouts refer to the overall equipment plans that have been provided for the preferred One-PACT CBOC, Two-PACT CBOC and Th ree-PACT CBOC schemes.

6.3

Th e Typical Exam Room has been refi ned during the course of this project, following several basic principles. Patient encounter rooms should have two doors whenever possible; patient privacy is to be maintained; patient encounter rooms are to be arranged as right handed rooms, with the computer station to the right as the care provider enters the room; and the room should not be cluttered with equipment deemed not necessary.

Figure 6.1 and 6.2 both illustrate a typical exam room. Th e only diff erence is the relationship between staff and patient doors. Figure 6.1 is the preferred option, with the two doors placed diagonally, and is the base used to develop the other exam rooms and orientation of the universal room. A swing door is shown off the patient corridor with a reverse swing for patient privacy. Additionally the door allows for a handrail to be installed along the patient corridor. A sliding door is provided from the staff corridor to maximize clear fl oor space and ease of moving carts and equipment into the exam space. A reverse swinging door is shown as an alternative to the slider. Refer to the Project Room Contents Report for an itemized list.

Th e typical exam room by room equipment list and the enlarged equipment plan on the previous page include the traditional case work. Th is is illustrated in Figure 6.3 below. Th e typical exam room can also be developed utilizing a prefabricated modular system as illustrated in Figure 6.4. A prefabricated system is a more fl exible alternative to

traditional casework. Th e rail-hung components are modular and interchangeable, allowing facilities to reconfi gure their spaces over time without undergoing extensive and costly renovations. Th e images shown below are the Herman Miller Compass System, Figure 6.5.

Th e Women’s Health Exam Room equipment list and layout is illustrated below. It is designed to be the same as the typical exam room with the doors placed diagonally allowing it to fl ex as necessary. Th e required patient toilet rooms are nested between the two women’s health rooms and occupy the same foot print as a single exam room. Th is allows this small component to easily be placed along the column grid within any bank of universal rooms.

It does include a patient lift which facilitates this space being utilized as a bariatric exam room.
