    Static route configuration commands include:

    1) To assign a static route, use the ip route command. To remove the entry, use theno form of this command.

    ip route ip-address {mask | mask-length } { interface-name | gateway-address }[ preferencevalue ] [ reject | blackhole ]

    no ip route ip-address {mask| mask-length } { interface-name | gateway-address}[ preferencevalue ]

    Syntax Description

    ip-address and mask IP address of the destination and mask, in dotted decimal. The 1s

    in the 32 bits in the mask are required to be continuous, so the mask in dotted decimalcan be substituted formask-length. The mask length is equivalent to the number of thecontinuous 1s in the mask

    interface-name name of the specified transmitting interface for this route; gateway-address IP address of the next hop for this route (dotted decimal).

    preference-value preference value for the router, ranging 0 to255.

    reject indicates a route that is unreachable route.

    blackhole indicates a route that is a backhole route.

    Default

    By default, the system can obtain the route to the net connected with the router. If nopreference value is specified while configuring the static route, it is 60 by default. If noreject and blackhole are set, the route is reachable.

    Usage Guideline

    When the destination IP address and mask are both 0.0.0.0, a default route isconfigured. That is, when routing table search fails, packets are forwarded along this

    default route.

    The route management policy can be flexibly used for setting different preferences.When multiple routes bound for the same destination are configured, and if the samepreference is specified, then load sharing can be implemented. If different preferencesare set, then route backup can be achieved.

    While configuring a static route, you can specify a TX interface, or a next-hop address.Which one is to be used depends on the actual situation. Just specifying the TXinterface as for the interface supporting solution of the network address to the link layeror point-to-point interface. As for NBMA interfaces like the interfaces and dialupinterface encapsulated with X.25 or frame relay, they support the point-to-point link, soin addition to configuring an IP route, you need to set up a secondary route at the linklayer, that is, a map from the IP address to the link-layer address (like dialer map ip,x.25 map ip or frame-relay map ip). In this situation, you can not specify the TXinterface by configuring a static route, and instead need to configure a next-hop IPaddress.

    This command can also be used when the routing table is too large and the user onlywishes to show the detail of several specified routes. According to the informationoutput through this command, the user can make sure if the specified routes exist or ifits status is correct.

    If the specified routes are those in a natural hop like 10.0.0.0, then the execution of thiscommand will show the detail of all the routes. Otherwise only routing informationcorresponding to the specified addresses is shown.

    The above information shows the destination ip address/the lengths of mask, routingprotocol type (Static indicating a static route, and Direct indicating a reachable route),priority of the route, metric, next hop address, and finally the output interface.

    This command shows all the routing information to a specified destination IP address.The output information helps the user make sure if the specified routes exist or if itsspecific status is correct.

    If routes in natural hop are specified like 10.0.0.0, then the detail about all the routes inthis hop will be shown; otherwise only the routing information corresponding to thespecified addresses is shown.

    The above information first shows the route state description sign, then the statistics ofthe whole routing table, finally the detail of each route. Their meanings are shown in thefollowing table.

    RetainUsually, when a certain routing protocol is normally exiting, all the routes identified byit will be deleted. However, those routes labeled with Retain will not be deleted.

    These routes do not forward packets as normal routes do. Packets selecting routeswith the label of REJECT will be dropped, and such routes will send ICMP

    RIP-2 has 2 transmission modes: broadcast and multicast. Multicast is the defaultmode. The multicast address in RIP-2 is 224.0.0.9. One of the advantages of multicastmode is that the hosts that do not run RIP in this network will not receive the broadcastpackets. Additionally, hosts running RIP-1 will be prevented from receiving andprocessing the RIP-2 routes with subnet masks.

    When the interface is specified to use RIP-1, only RIP-1 and RIP-2 broadcast packetswill be received. In this case, RIP-2 will be rejected. When the interface is specified touse RIP-2 broadcast, only RIP-2 broadcast packets will be received. In this case, RIP-2multicast packets will be rejected. Whe the interface is specified to use RIP-2 multicast,only RIP-2 multicast packets will be received. In this case, RIP-1 and RIP-2 broadcast

    the interfaces by default. The network number specified must not contain any subnetinformation. You can specify multiple network commands. Also, if an interface's network is not specified, it willnot be advertised in any RIP update.

    no network is similar to no ip rip work functionally, but they are not totally the same.They are the same in that the interface of either command no longer receives andtransmits RIP routes. They are different in that, with the no ip rip work command, theother interface is still forwarding the route using the interface of this command; with the

    By default, IGRP does not advertise routes of other protocols, but it can redistributeroutes of other protocols by executing the redistribute command. If the metric is notyet set via the command when the redistribute command is run, then use the metric inthe default-metric command as the metric that should have been set via theredistribute command.

    The metric of an redistributed route does not change, so this may result in serious

    distortion as compared with dynamic routing information. So be careful in redistributing

    active_interval active time interval which is the time length for switching routinginformation between the Client and Server, ranging 5 to 1000 minutes.

    quiet_intervalquiet time interval that is the time interval between the active_intervals.During this interval, all the routes at this interface will be locked up just as in the case ofthe static route, until the next active interval. It ranges from 8 to 100000 minutes. Thequiet_interval should be 3 minutes greater than the active_interval.

    Be sure that the configuration of all routers in the IGRP autonomous system is thesame. If all routers are not configured the same way, you increase the possibility ofrouting loops.

    3.14 metric weights

    The metric in IGRP is a weight metric, and is calculated based on such feature values

    as bandwidth, delay, reliability, and loading. k1, k2, k3, k4, and k5 are constantcoefficients for calculation. The greater the value of k is, the large proportion the featurerelevant with it has in the weighted metric. If k is 0, then this indicates that this featurevalue is not considered in the weight metric. k1 is the weight for bandwidth, k2is theweight for loading, k3 is the weight for delay, and k4 and k5are weights for reliability (k4is a weight in direct ratio and k5is a weight in inverse ratio).

    In metric calculation, different TOSs can be provided according to the K values. For

    example, some service has a higher delay requirement, then k3 can be set to a greatervalue. In this way, more consideration is given to delay during route selection, and the

    delay service is provided.

    Example

    ! Set the constant weights for metric constant coefficients in IGRP as follows:

    tos = 0, k1 = 2, k2= 0, k3 = 2, k4 = 0 and k5=0.
