  • More geographically specific than a wine appellation, or even asub-AVA, is a vineyard of grape origin. Though not by itself anappellation of origin, if a vineyard is indicated on a label, at least95% of the grapes must have been grown in that vineyard. The producer of a vineyard-designated, or single-vineyard

wine, believes grapes grown there produce a uniquenessdeserving of special recognition. It is not required that thevineyard be the producers own, as in cases where grapes werepurchased from an independent grower who gave permission tostate the vineyards name on the label. With a successful wine, its

a winning situation for everyonevineyard owner, wineproducer, and consumer.Napa Valleys Heitz Cellars was the first California vineyard-

designated commercial wine to reach notable success. In 1966,the Heitz Marthas Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (not a referenceto the popular Massachusetts summer destination) was that erasversion of thinking outside the box. Today, its easy to findwineries making single-vineyard wines. Californias J. LohrWinery & Vineyards, Wente Vineyards, and Dry Creek Vineyardare three brands with numerous wine selections featuring singlevineyard designations. Heres something to keep in mind: when comparing wine

labels that appear identical, but are priced differently, look closelyfor a vineyard designation. Sometimes its easy to miss that subtledistinction, but this detail is important because a single-vineyardwine is often more expensive. Usually, its worth spending a littleextra because a special vineyard creates a wine of distinction. There is a unique word for distinctiveness derived from the

accumulation of one-of-a-kind geographic, geologic, and climaticconditions of a single location. That word is terroir.

  • Theres one thing you can count on as a farmer: one yearsweather will never be like any other. What that means inpractice is that the past only serves as example, not roadmap. And especially in a year like this one, where none of theestablished past patterns seem to hold and drought is on theclose horizon, how we strategize about the weather and ourwater use makes the difference between having grapes to makeinto wine and having to take a pass after two bumper harvests ina row. What makes this doubly fraught is that this yearsdecisions affect two years crops. Why? Because vines arent like other annual, row crops. If

you look closely at a vine, you will see both this years and nextyears buds, which is why weather damage can be such aproblem: a grower is forced to contemplate the loss of multipleyears income. Inside each bud are really small leaves, and fromthem come the leaves, canes, shoots and grapes, and each budhas concentric layers, which is why weather damage is along acontinuum. Minor damage, generally from frost, may reduce theyield a bit, but its the more severe darkening, akin to frostbite, which is the real issue, guaranteeing a crop loss of at least fiftypercent, if not more. Equally, the phloem, the bark on theexterior of canes and vine trunks, can also be damaged by cold, causing crop losses, too.The best way to understand winegrowing options for weather

mitigation is to walk through the vineyard throughout the year.Winter cold, even as cold as we got this past year, is actually noissue because the vines are dormant, which is why all fifty stateshave vineyards. Spring is when weather has the most impact on

two years crops because the weather often flipflops quitequickly, and rain at an early point can be helpful to bringtemperatures up while later in the season causing crop damagevia hail or thunderstorms winds. Shattering of the blomingflowers can disrupt clusters or keep them from being fertilized, yet when faced with a frost event earlier in the year, rain iswelcomed as it brings the temperature up above freezing.summer and fall heat can also be an issue because too-high atemperature can cause vines to shut down, shriveling or evensunburning grapes, and also potentially killing the vine in theprocess. There are actually lots of options for mitigation, and the best,

as you might expect, are set up so as to help solve more than oneproblem. Believe it or not, something as simple as low trellisingversus high has an impact as far as weather goes as low trellisesin the wrong locales are more subject to frost damage, andhigher trellises can provide shade for adjacent rows. How thetrellis is trimmed in winter and early spring prior to budbreak isthus one strategy, and there is projected to be a move back toCalifornia Sprawl from the VSP candelabra currently seen allover as the North Coast replants in the next few years for thisreason: not only does this provide different vine growth and brixgains, but it also helps as regards frost or hail damage duringApril and May, when the buds break and the vines flower.Mechanical options abound, too. The wine machines, those

twirling engines and fans on poles; the Inverted Sinks or AirDams, which essentially turn the wind machine to provide afrost sink to pull cold air down and away from vines on hillsidesand slopes; vertical sprinklers and micro-sprinklers, which canraise the temperature or allow frozen water to encase and protectthe vines; and smudge pots, the gas fired heaters for the end ofvineyard rows which work in combination with windmachines all are ways to work in combination with the land tomitigate the negatives of weather while allowing the terroir, thelocational distinctiveness, to still show through in the grapes andfinished wines by moving the weather since the vines reallycannot. Its not always easy or cheap, but the results are worthit, no? Enjoy!
