Matt Maudlin: Servants Community Housing
Donate
Life week
2nd-9th
August
First 2015-16
course starts
Monday 3rd
August
Yarra Bend Rotary had the pleasure of welcoming back
Matt Maudlin , CEO, Servants Community Housing to
share with us the powerful story and success that is
Servants. Servants has been operating affordable
accommodation and safe housing for those on low
incomes for over a quarter of a century in Hawthorn, and
more recently in Kew.
In addition to sharing heartfelt and uplifting stories of past
and recent residents and following on from the success of
the original publication, Anthology, in 2011, Matt
discussed the success of the recently released book
Narrative, which tells some of the stories of the
residents who call their Servants housing ‘home’.
This project was undertaken with seven Year Eleven
students from Melbourne Girls College, Methodist
Ladies College, Trinity Grammar School and Xavier
College.
Yarra Bend looks forward to gathering a number of
members to visit Servants and share a meal with
residents soon .

This week’s speaker Matt Maudlin spoke so
eloquently of Servant’s mantra; respect, dignity,
hope. I always find likeminded organisations
provide the inspiration and motivation to
continue to give service above self—thanks Matt
for the reminder!
With Yarra Bend committing to another year of
the exchange program, this time with outbound student Lucy Joseland to
France, I am delighted that our newest member Edda Williams has agreed
to be Lucy’s counselor.
In a few weeks , a number of our Swinburne Rotaractors will be speaking
at our meeting and sharing the exciting year ahead for their club. I remind
members that all Rotaractors will be celebrating their change in leadership
on Saturday 1st August, a strong representation from Yarra Bend shows
our continued support , I encourage your attendance where possible.
Tony reminded us that organ donation week is almost upon us again,
please click on the Donate Life logo on the front page of this bulletin to
learn more and see how you can make a contribution to this valuable
endeavour.
Also on the front page is the logo link to the Rotary Leadership Institute
(RLI) that is kicking off for another successful year in early August. Yarra
Bend has had at least 2 members attend each year for quite some time.
Whether you are a new or experienced member, if you have not
undertaken RLI I strongly encourage you to consider doing so.
Preparations for the launching of Yammer as Yarra Bend’s new communi-
cation, collaborative and storage technology are now complete. To ensure
we all get comfortable with this change I will be running a number of
Yammer workshops with the first being on Wednesday 5 August @ 530pm
(just before our meeting). Please bring your tablet and/or smartphone so
we can get you setup too.
We have tremendous opportunity in 2015-16 to share our gifts as we give
service above self and be a gift to the world.
Members, friends of Rotary & interested readers of this bulletin, I look
forward to seeing you this Wednesday– Justin
Yarra Bend Rotarian Jane Stott The radio superstar!
Justin on the radio
Since mid last year Jane has been quietly acquiring her ‘on-air’ and control
room skills at 96.5 Inner FM by hosting the Rotary in Action program every
6 weeks.
With her ‘dulcet’ tones, and friendly conversational style, Jane flys the flag
high for Yarra Bend Rotary.
Running from 4pm to 5pm each Tuesday, the Rotary in Action hour is
shared among a number of Rotary Clubs with Jane’s next ‘slot’ being
Tuesday 1st September.
Earlier this week Justin
was interviewed on 96.5
Inner FM by Yarra
Bend’s very own Jane
Stott.
Discussing various men-
toring projects, Justin’s
motivation to join Rotary
and his plans as current
President, Yarra Bend
was the winner with a
great opportunity to
promote all the Club’s
good work.

Affectionately known as an ‘adult Disneyland’, David shared a number of
reflections on his recent hiking trip through the Grand Canyon. As high as
Mount Kosciusko, 446km long, 16kms wide and 1.5kms deep, the Grand
Canyon region covers 6700km2.
With a lack of health and safety very apparent, David indicated that there are a
considerable number of deaths with people falling from the rims and paths. A
total of 712 deaths have been recorded since the 1800s.
At Yarra Bend Rotary meetings we regularly have a
Member deliver a 5 minute presentation. Over last few
years we have enjoyed a tremendous variety of
presentations, Rotary related, personal experiences, the
comical and not the so comical! Its all about fellowship
and getting to know each other.
