The information you provide in this form will be entered into Overseer and used to generate a report.

This report will provide you with ongoing statistics on how well your farm(s) has/have been managing nitrogen efficiency and nitrogen loss. It will also show you your farm’s nitrogen conversion efficiency and leaching loss risk compared to other farms in your region.

If you need some help in completing the form or you would like more information about the nitrogen programme please contact your Area Manager, your SDA or a Service Specialist on 0800 65 65 68.

Please complete and return forms to Fonterra by no later than 31st July 2017.

The table below describes the whole farm area including support blocks and land that are attached to the dairy farm and used for other forms of farming.

If you wish to utilise your nitrogen report to demonstrate compliance with regional council rules; it is recommended that you speak to your Sustainable Dairying Advisor to enter your farm management blocks into our mapping system to ensure that these are consistent with council requirements.

EXPLANATION AREA (HA)

Total farm area

The ‘total farm area’ is the total land area of the property that the dairy shed is located within. It includes attached land parcels that are leased. It includes effective and non-effective areas. It includes dairy support land and land used for other farming enterprises where that land is immediately beside or attached to the dairy farm.

Dairy farm area

The ‘dairy farm area’ is the total area (effective and non-effective areas) that makes up the dairy farm. It includes the milking platform and any attached/adjacent land that is predominantly used as dairy support land. (For many dairy farms this will be the same area as total farm area above). It does not include land that is used predominantly for sheep, beef, deer, horticulture or arable enterprises.

IF YOU PROVIDED THIS INFORMATION (FARM MANAGEMENT BLOCK INFORMATION) LAST SEASON AND

THERE HAVE BEEN NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGES – TICK HERE AND MOVE TO THE NEXT PAGE.

Enter your effluent irrigation block(s) first then other pasture management blocks and permanent crop blocks and lastly non productive blocks such as riparian or bush blocks.

Split up pasture areas into blocks that have significant differences in:

• Management e.g. Different fertiliser Regime • Irrigated/non irrigated (freshwater irrigation)

• Soils/slope • Lucerne

These must all be separate blocks.

If you require more block options than this table allows for, please provide the block breakdown and any explanatory notes in the notes section on page 1.

NOTE: For many farms there may only be an effluent area and one pasture block area.

EXPLANATION NOTES OR BLOCK NAME AREA (HA)

Block 1 If you have an effluent irrigation system on farm enter this area as Effluent Block (s) in to the table. If you have treatment ponds with a consent to discharge to water please type ‘discharge to water’ in to the notes section below.

TOTAL Total of these blocks should equal the dairy farm area on the farm description table (page 1).

Did you grow fodder crops on your dairy farm in the 2016/2017 season? e.g. turnips, maize, triticale, kale etc Yes No

If you answered ‘yes’, on which block(s) was the crop grown?

Do you utilse a support* block as part of your farm system.

If you wish to include this area of land as part of your nutrient budget; you will need to complete the online version of the Nitrogen Recording Pages (https://nzfarmsource.co.nz/) as this will allow you to include additional information about your support block.

Yes No

* any land (outside the milking platform) used for dairy grazing, including grazing of dry cows and dairy replacements (whether or not contiguous to the milking platform) that is owned or leased by the same person or entity as the milking platform and/or farmed in association with the milking platform’.

Important Note: With improvements to Overseer it is now the preferred approach to enter the herd numbers by month. This allows for a more robust Overseer file to be created for your farm. If you do not have enough information to complete the monthly table then please leave this page blank and fill in the peak herd table on the following page instead.

EITHER: MONTHLY HERD INPUT

Record all details by month of the milking herd(s) and replacements that are grazed on the dairy farm in the 1 June 2016 to 31 May 2017 period. (Complete table below). Cows wintered off the dairy farm should not be included in the herd number for the month(s) they are off farm.

Important Note: Because the Overseer model utilises long term average climate information, please enter irrigation scheduling as it would occur during a typical irrigation season i.e. enter months you would typically irrigate rather than the months you did irrigate during the last season.

Note: If you wish to utilise your nitrogen report to demonstrate compliance with regional council rules; you need to complete the online version of the Nitrogen Recording Pages (https://nzfarmsource.co.nz/) as this will allow you to include additional information about your irrigation system.

Please check the description at the top of each box to ensure you complete the correct form. Only fill in the table(s) for the system(s) that best describe your farm.

FEED PADS: A hard surface area (i.e. concrete) that is normally sited adjacent to the farm dairy where stock can be held for a period of time (i.e. one to two hours), either prior to ,or after milking, and that is provided with supplementary feed.

For how long are the solids stored?

Are the solids covered while they are being stored?

STAND-OFF, WINTERING BARNS, OR LOAFING PADS: An area specifically built to enable stock to be withheld from grazing pasture (or crops) during wet periods, with the main aim being to minimise damage to pasture (or crop), or a barn or similar where cows are housed for longer periods.
