A: From all indications, the meeting that fol-lowed the big wreck at Atlanta Motor Speedwaytwo weeks before signaled the end of the sim-mering feud between Edwards and Keselowski. The two were summoned, along with their carowners Jack Roush and Roger Penske, to themeeting after Edwards intentionally wreckedKeselowski at Atlanta Motor Speedway twoweeks earlier.

“I think the biggest thing coming out of thatmeeting is that now, I think, Brad and I under-stand one another a little better,” Edwards said.“I think we’re going to be able to just go forwardand go racing, and that’s what this is all about.

“It was really cool to be able to talk with Jackand Roger and Brad all at once. We laughed. Wecried. In the end, I think it’s going to be good.”

Keselowski, now in his first season driving forPenske, had similar comments after the meet-

ing. “We hadn’t talked before,” he said. “I would-n’t say there was anything said that surprisedme.

“You have to understand, Carl and I have amutual respect for each other, in a sense we’realmost the same people.

“We come from similar backgrounds. We drivethe same way. I have a lot of respect for himbefore and after the accident. Hopefully, thatwill stay the same.”

If anyone thought the meeting would shakeup Keselowski, he immediately proved themwrong by going right out and winning the polefor the Bristol Nationwide Series race. Then heraced his Penske Racing teammate JustinAllgaier for the victory, with Allgaier prevailingto get his first major NASCAR victory. Then thetwo raced together without incident in the FoodCity 500 on Sunday.

Q: What did Scott Speed have to say aboutshowing up at Bristol Motor Speedway with hishair dyed black and blue?

A: “It was just one of those things where I wassort of bored looking in the mirror,” Speed said.“I had always done different stuff with my hair.I had a Mohawk at one time, I bleached it allplatinum white at one time, but I had goneabout a year and a half, I would say since I gotmarried honestly, I sort of lost the drive to fixmyself.”

He said he got on Twitter and asked fanswhat they thought about black and blue hair forBristol.

“I got more responses for that than I haveever with what I have posted on there,” he said.“Everyone said I should do it and I knewAmanda [Speed, wife] hated it and she didn’twant me to do it so I said, ‘Look babe, this iswhat the people want, sorry.’

“It kind of gave me the ammunition or theconfidence to do it without causing too muchproblems at home. Amanda still hates it and Ilove it so there will be some more interestingconversations between Amanda and I on TwitterI’m sure.”

NOTEBOOKFinal seconds favor Johnson

If there was ever a format made to order forJimmie Johnson and his No. 48 crew, it’s onewhere the winner of a long event is deter-mined by performance in the final moments.

The Chase format for determining thechampion of the Sprint Cup Series has beenplaying into Johnson’s hand every year as nomatter who shows strength during the 26-raceregular season, he steps ahead in the final 10.Or at least he has for four straight years.

It’s the same with individual races. Histhree wins so far this season – at Auto Club,Las Vegas and at Bristol Motor Speedway onSunday – came in races that other driversappeared poised to win. At Auto ClubSpeedway, he needed some luck in the pits tooverpower the Richard Childress contingentlate in the race, but he was successful in that.

At Vegas, it was Johnson’s HendrickMotorsports teammate Jeff Gordon who led arace high 219 laps only to lose to Johnson, who took the lead with 17 laps to go after hisfour tires taken on the final pit stop proved tobe better than Gordon’s two. At Vegas,Johnson led just 18 laps total.

At Bristol, Kurt Busch led 278 laps andappeared to have the fastest car, but a late-race caution for a small piece of debris on thetrack sent the leaders to the pits for freshtires.

Four drivers took just two, while Busch andJohnson took four apiece and lined up fifthand sixth with 10 laps left to run.

The outside lane took off first, givingJohnson the break he needed to score his50th career Cup win, while Busch was third.Johnson led the final seven laps and 84 over-all.

Kurt Busch credits crew chiefEven though Busch lost out in the late-race

shuffle, the Food City 500 was yet another signthat crew chief Steve Addington probably has-n’t been getting enough credit for his contribu-tions to his race drivers.

He got his first 12 Cup victories with KyleBusch then added another with Kurt Busch atAtlanta this year.

“I have a great crew chief in SteveAddington,” Busch said. “Maybe a missing linkI’ve been missing at Penske for years. But it’searly in the year. We’ve had a couple of solidruns. We’re not going to get too far ahead ofourselves.”

Pearson injured in Bristol raceThe old-timers race

at Bristol MotorSpeedway, the ScottsEZ Seed Showdown, was supposed to be afun event, but it wasmarred by a wreck thatleft former NationwideSeries champion LarryPearson with seriousinjuries.

Jim Wozniak, aWelmont HealthSystem spokesman, told the Bristol Herald Courier that Pearsonhad a compound fracture of the left ankle, afractured pelvis and fractured right hand.

Pearson’s car appeared to be sliding with aflat tire when it was struck by the oncomingcar driven by Charlie Glotzbach. The driverswere in Late Model cars that are about as fastas Sprint Cup cars but do not carry many ofthe safety features that have been incorporatedinto NASCAR’s Car of Tomorrow.

The week off that followed the CarlEdwards-Brad Keselowski incident atAtlanta Motor Speedway meant thatwhen the drivers arrived at BristolMotor Speedway last Friday, it was thefirst chance for the media to quiz themabout the incident and its aftermath.

Not surprisingly, a lot of the question-ing centered on how young drivers learnthe unwritten rules of the sport, especial-ly when it comes to aggressive driving.Call it Racing Etiquette 101.

It didn’t take Jeff Gordon but a secondto recall his introduction to class.

“Phoenix,1993. Dale Earnhardt Sr.and me backing into the wall,” Gordonsaid. “Yeah, I remember it well.

“At the time I was pretty mad, and did-n’t think I was deserving of it. About sixyears later I was like, ‘Now I get it.’

“I was racing way too hard for 10thplace, too early in the race, and I had itcoming to me. It was the perfect time toteach me a lesson from the best guy to doit. I never forgot it, obviously, but I didlearn from it.”

Kasey Kahne said he learned his firstbig lesson from Gordon, and apparentlyall Gordon had to do was point his fingerout the window during a race.

“I’m not sure which finger I waspointing out the window at Kasey thatday, but it worked,” Gordon said. “Ithink every rookie goes through that, and that’s what makes being a rookie sotough. You feel the pressure. You feelout of your element. You’re not sure ifyou belong there or if you have what ittakes.

“You’re going though these lessons thatyou don’t want to go through, you don’tlike going through them, but it’s neces-sary. It makes you a better driver, andit’s what everybody has to go through. Ifthere’s a rookie that comes in and doesn’t

go through that will you let me know sowe can make sure he doesn’t get throughthe season clean?”

Denny Hamlin said Mark Martinschooled him at Martinsville.

“It was my only DNF [Did Not Finish]of my rookie season,” he said. “I was rac-

ing Mark Martin I think pretty hard, probably midway through the race, andhe just ran right up into me and cut myleft rear tire on purpose.

“I spun out, I tried to cause a cautionand I ended up backing into the fenceand ended our day.”

Hamlin said he was really mad at thetime and talked to Martin the next day.

“He was like, ‘Why were you even run-ning me that hard?’ I was like, ‘I don’tknow to be honest with you.’ But I feellike all the mistakes I’ve made, I’ve atleast made a conscious effort to try tocorrect them or learn from them.”

Sometimes class was even a littlefunny, or at least the stories are now.

Jimmie Johnson learned some lessonsfrom both Burton brothers, Jeff andWard.

It was Ward and his thick Virginiaaccent that Johnson remembers most.

It started with a crash at NewHampshire.

“We were coming from the back andcoming up through there and we gottogether going into Turn 1, and I got intohim and turned him around and he hitthe fence,” Johnson said. “He got back ontrack and spent like four or five laps try-ing to crash me. So then I was prettynervous about what went on and startedtracking him down.

“I called his office but that didn’t workand somehow I got his home phone num-ber. And I don’t know what made himmore mad actually, whether it was mecalling him on the phone or calling himat home. I think he was cussing at mebecause it was a little tough to under-stand him, but he went on for 30 secondsin just four-letter words and he finallycalmed down and we talked it out fromthere.

“That’s just a part of it.”
