The California State UniversityThe individual California State Colleges were brought together as asystem by the Donahoe Higher Education Act of 1960. In 1972 thesystem became The Calif ornia State Universit y and Colleges and in 1982the system became The California State University (CSU). Today, thecampuses of the CSU include comprehensive and polytechnicuniversities and, since July 1995, the California Maritime Academy, a

specialized campus. The oldest campus San Jos State University w as founded in 1857and became the first institution of public higher education in California. The most recent ly opened campus Cali fornia State Universi ty,M onterey Bay, began admitting students in the fall of 1995. A new sitehas been conveyed and a 23rd campus, CSU Channel Islands, is beingformally established in Ventura County with plans to open in 2002.

Responsibility for The California State University is vested in the Boardof Trustees, whose members are appointed by the Governor. TheTrustees appoint t he Chancellor, who is the chief execut ive offi cer of thesystem, and the Presidents, who are the chief executive officers on therespective campuses.

The Trustees, the Chancellor and the Presidents develop systemwide

policy, with actual implementation at the campus level taking placethrough broadly based consultat ive procedures. The Academic Senate ofThe California State University, made up of elected representatives ofthe facult y from each campus, recommends academic policy to the Boardof Trustees through t he Chancellor.

Academic excellence has been achieved by The California StateUniversity through a distinguished faculty, whose primary responsibilityis superior teaching. While each campus in the system has its ownunique geographic and curricular character, all campuses, asmultipurpose institutions, offer undergraduate and graduate instructionfor professional and occupational goals as well as broad liberaleducation. All of the campuses require for graduation a basic program ofGeneral Education Requirements regardless of the type of bachelorsdegree or major field selected by the student.

The CSU offers more than 1,600 bachelors and masters degreeprograms in some 240 subject areas. M any of these programs areoffered so that students can complete all upper division and graduaterequirements by part-time late afternoon and evening study, or bydistance learning form home or work via computer or television. Inaddition, a variety of teaching and school service credential programsare available. A limited number of doctoral degrees are offered jointlyw ith the University of California and wit h private educational institutionsof California.

Enrollments in fall 1999 totaled 359,719 students, who were t aught byover 20,600 faculty. The system awards more than half of the bachelorsdegrees and 30 percent of the masters degrees granted in California. Some 1.94 million persons have been graduated from CSU campusessince 1960.

    STATEWIDE EXTERNAL DEGREE PROGRAMS

Through the Offices of Continuing Education on various campuses, theCSU offers Statewide external degree programs. These self-supportingprograms are designed for the working adult. The coursework is offeredat both on campus and off campus locations throughout the state.

These programs are entirely upper division or graduate level. Credit andcoursework are transferable statewide. The programs are financed bystudent fees.
