SOCIETY SOCIETY –– BEGINNINGS BEGINNINGS

AA Brief History of the Cottage in which it is Established by Rex L Cross – 9.IX.1982

The land on which the cottage stands was originally purchased by Mrs Emma Rowley Mrs Emma Rowley (nee Hunt) who arrived in the colony in 1832 and who came to Queanbeyan in the early 1840’s. The cottage was built in the year 1880 by Samuel Austin Samuel Austin and William Moore William Moore for John James Wright John James Wright (1821 – 1904), Queanbeyan’s first M.P (1874 1877), and first Major (1885). Bricks used in the cottage were made by brickmaker William George William George who lived at that time on the Garryowen Estate and after whom George Street, Garryowen (Queanbeyan) was named. The price of the bricks was two pounds - $4 per 1000. The cottage is noted for its brickwork, the front being laid in English bond and the eastern wall in American Bond. As bricks of quite different colour and composition were used in the building combined with the contrasting bonds, it is obvious that two bricklaying contractors were in-volved and that the bricks came from different pits. John James Wright never lived in the cottage; it was another of his speculative ventures. Its first occupant was James O’Neill James O’Neill (1825 – 1891), who married Mary Ann AfflickMary Ann Afflick of Gundaroo. James was the son of John O’NeillJohn O’Neill and Anne Townsend of Ireland where James was born; he was a mill contractor and coach proprietor of Queanbeyan. When the 1891 floodwaters 1891 floodwaters entered the cottage James was ill and had to be removed to-gether with his family; he died a few months later aged 63 years leaving a wife and eight children.

The cottage later was referred to as “O’Neill’s Cottage” before being allocated to the Queanbeyan Art SocietyThe cottage later was referred to as “O’Neill’s Cottage” before being allocated to the Queanbeyan Art Society.

Fiona’s winning entry “Valentine’s Day” in the abstract competition was quite a hit with members who in turn prompted the committee to approach Fiona. At the Queanbeyan Leagues Club competition on Sunday 7th

March 2013, saw Fiona briefly describing her techniques and the avenues open to those who want to go down the mixed media path. SIZE OF PAINTINGSSIZE OF PAINTINGS

A A GOOD complaint has surfaced at the Gallery, we are getting

too many over a metre size paintings so the committee has added

an extra condition.

SIZE: SIZE: Any work entered, which measures greater than 1 metre

along any edge, will incur an additional cost of $5 – this replaces

the present guidelines regarding large works.

We may need to restrict the number of ‘large’ works, but we

need to make sure that all artist get a good share of the Gallery

space.

That question comes up again is there a future need to enlarge

the Gallery space and should we be seriously start planning.

LAUREL’S LOSSLAUREL’S LOSS

LLIFE Member Laurel Blyton Laurel Blyton is missing a

very valuable Queanbeyan ‘History Painting’ from the QAS Gallery and would like to know if any member knows of its whereabouts. It appears to have gone missing around the time of the renovations to the QAS Gallery. It is a painting of several cottages on the Queanbeyan River including the in the area of the present Gallery. Laurel has a special affection to this paint-ing and it is sad to lose this kind of history of Queanbeyan. It did hang in the Gallery for a number of years. Please contact Jean Helmers Jean Helmers the Gallery Manager if anyone has any idea of its whereabouts.

PRESIDENT’S PALETTEPRESIDENT’S PALETTE

MMEMBERS, it is that time again. The QAS AGM will be held on Saturday 27th April 2013 Saturday 27th April 2013 at the Gallery.

This meeting will take place after the Fauves and Impressionists Exhibition intake which means it is only one visit to the Gallery and I hope members take the time to attend the meeting. Even better it would be great if more members put their hands up to take up a position on the committee or make it known that you are available to be on a sub committee or be a ‘dogs body’ to help to progress our Society. On page four you will see we are getting more and more paintings over a metre in size which is pleasing but we are finding it hard to accommodate in the Gallery with our restricted space. I have pointed out before the Gallery size is fast becoming a problem for the Society and I believe it is time we should have a three year plan to look into the future needs. Our membership is growing, our Workshop space is restricted, our Gallery hanging space is becoming inadequate and when art classes are held visitors are often unable to view all the works in that Exhibition. I hope the members do not sit on their hands and decide not to see the need to start planning for our future. I would be pleased to hear from our members on future planningI would be pleased to hear from our members on future planning.

GOULBURN ART HISTORYGOULBURN ART HISTORY

GOULBURN and District Art Society started its life in 1956 as

the Goulburn Art Club. Its mission was and still is "to foster art and culture in the Goulburn district". During its 55 years the society has held many exhibitions and competitions which attract exhibitors from a much wider part of the state . Members enter many competitions, have their paintings hung in

prestigious exhibitions such as the Blake and have been awarded prizes at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Canberra and district shows. The society has influenced the work of many local artists and through their association with it, their works are much sought after.

WORHSHOPS WORHSHOPS EXPRESSION OF INTERESTEXPRESSION OF INTEREST

TTHE QAS Committee is keen for the Society to develop more Workshops for members and

is sending out the message to anyone anyone who may want to conduct a Workshop. Please get in touch with the committee to show your expression of interest in doing so. Many artist are keen to enhance their experience in art and conducting a Workshop is a way to do just that. We believe there are many artists ‘out there’ wishing to promote their talents. The committee has decided to hold at least two Workshops before the end of the calendar year. The first to be held will be on June 15June 15--16 and November 1616 and November 16--17 17 but if Workshop tutors can be found locally there will be more help this year. If any member knows of anyone who may be keen to take on a Work-shop please contact the committee. Rhonda Daniall Rhonda Daniall had offered to take up the QAS Workshop programming but commitments have not allowed her to fulfil these obligations. If any members would like to take on this position we would be pleased to hear from you. Thank you Rhonda for the work you had already done and we will be able to Thank you Rhonda for the work you had already done and we will be able to
