FROM THE PRINCIPAL

MR MARKS This week, Mrs Dallimore shared with

staff an article about loving students. It

was a great follow up to what we had

discussed over conference week and linked so nicely

with our core value for the term, “Love”.

It was an article adapted from the book, “English

Comes Alive!”, and below are some snippets of what

was written.

When I first began teaching, I worked for a wise, much

loved and respected chairperson-Dr. Harwell Sturdivant

of Western Maryland College. I once asked him, “What

is the most important of all qualities in great

teachers?” I thought he would say “preparedness,” for

he insisted on high standards for students and teachers

alike. Instead, he replied, “Love.” To be good teachers,

he felt that we must love and understand our students.

In polls of students, teachers, and college presidents,

the personality or human qualities of teachers have

consistently ranked high in importance. These go by

various names: love, understanding, patience,

empathy, kindness, warmth, interest in students—and

they are all basically synonyms for love.

Teachers need other qualities for success—for example,

preparedness, skill, and enthusiasm—but their love for

students ties all this together.

Our world is sometimes harsh, but we can make it

more pleasant for our students through little acts of

kindness, acts that show how much we care for them.

And these acts generate ripples, spreading our love

through our students to other people.

In conference week we had discussed how EVERYONE

is made in the image of God and that we are called to

love EVERYONE, as God loves us.

This article was a great reminder for us all, not just

teachers. Change the word ‘teachers’ to ‘adults’, and

change ‘students’ to ‘children/ young people’. What a

difference we can make. Let’s not make a ripple but

rather a tidal wave by sharing God’s love with

everyone. Mr Marks

NRL TACKLING BULLYING

Years 1-6 Assembly Tuesday 18th Feb 2014 @ 1pm

Representatives from NSW National Rugby League will visit NCS on 18th February to run a Rugby League clinic with Year 5-6 students and then take an assembly about how students can deal with issues regarding bullying.

The visit in 2013 was very positive and we have decided to facilitate this sporting organisation’s important message once again.

Parents and friends of NCS are also welcome to attend.

Week 2 (last week): God Made Everything (Genesis 1) Welcome to God Space for 2014! We start the year looking at some big questions like: Who made the world? Why are we here? Pray that your children will rejoice in knowing that they are loved by our Creator God and have real meaning and purpose in life! Week 3: A Job To Do (Genesis 1:26-29, Psalm 8:5-8) The Big Idea: Part of our purpose in life is to look after God's creation. Your family might like to discuss how people have succeeded or failed in this job, and how you might be positively involved in making a difference in the world. Mrs Davey, Primary Chaplain

SCHOOL NEWS

STEPS If you are new to our school, perhaps you are not aware of our Secondary School’s Homework Centre. Each Wednesday afternoon, students from Year 7 – 10 meet together in the Library assisted by senior student mentors to assist them in completing regular homework and revision, and researching and writing assignments. It is our aim to pair junior students with a regular senior student mentor. Some students are returning for their third year of STEPS, and due to the generosity of our senior students we have places remaining for new students or students commencing high school this year. This program is primarily targeted towards young people who struggle with homework, revision and organising these skills. If you are interested, please contact Mrs Hetherington at the School.

STEPS will be continuing this year. Dates for STEPS for Term One.

19th Feb. School Swimming Carnival

26th Feb. - 9th April

CRUNCH AND SIP

RE-LAUNCH Don’t forget next Monday 17th February we are re- launching CRUNCH AND SIP as a whole K-6 initiative. Children are asked to bring in some vegetables and/ or fruit as well as a water bottle to participate each day.

There will be opportunity given to all classes to eat their vegies and fruit and to drink their water sometime during the first session of teaching and learning time (8:35 – 10:25). This will ensure that the students are not hungry nor thirsty during the longest session of the day.

It will also help them towards getting their daily recommended serves of vegetables (5 serves) and fruit (2 serves), as well as stay well hydrated with water.

We have included an information sheet with facts and tips to help parents make good choices for their children’s health and nutrition. This is entitled ‘Go For 2 & 5’. Please keep it in a prominent place in your home (such as on the fridge door) where it can serve as a reminder to everyone in the family.

We have included a short video clip on the NCS website about Crunch and Sip. Please visit the site and watch the clip to learn more about this program.

As part of the official Crunch and Sip launch, we are holding an ‘NCS CARROT CRUNCH OFF’. We will have carrots for every K-6 student and then gather together to have everyone ‘Crunch on their Carrot’ at the same time. We will attempt to record the level of sound using a decibel recording app. I know that we have some noisy eaters in K-6, perhaps we can make enough of a din to break the NSW, Australian or even the world record for noisiest carrot eating!

For more information on healthy eating and physical activity for you and your

family please visit: www.gofor2and5.com.au www.healthykids.nsw.edu.au

Have a healthy and nutritious start to 2014!

The 2014 Relay for Life will be held on the last weekend of March (29 - 30th).

Here at NCS we would love to have as many students involved as possible again this year. Letters will be sent home with interested students this week. There will be a Year 5-6 team again (the Prime Movers), a Stage 4 team (Yrs7-8), a Stage 5 team (Yrs 9-10) and a Seniors team yet again. We are also entering a staff team and parents are more than welcome to join.

If you would like to be involved with parent supervision during the event, please either call Mr Smith or email him: [email protected]

SCHOOL NEWS

Last week we had the privilege of welcoming our new Kindy students and their families. To be part of any child’s first day is very special and we thank the families for allowing us to be part of that. We prayed, and will continue to pray, that all of the children quickly settle into life here at Nowra Christian School. They are all special little people, made in the image of God, and we are honoured to have the opportunity to partner the families in helping them ‘Grow up into Christ’.
