PERSONNEL BREAKDOWN -- OFFENSE (cont.)

After spending the first four years of his NFL career as a back-up quarterback, Tony Romo was thrust into the spotlight, takingover the starting role midway through the 2006 season. In just 10games, Romo led the team to a 6-4 record and a playoff berth. Hisovernight sensation earned him his first career Pro Bowl selection. He returned as the full-time starter in 2007 and established thenfranchise marks for completions (335), passing yards (4,211) andtouchdowns (36) among several others. He also led Dallas to a fran-chise record tying 13-3 finish and its 20th division title.

In 2008, despite being injured for three games, Romo finishedhis second full season as a starter with 3,448 yards (12th in theNFL) on 450 attempts for a rating of 91.4 (eighth in the league)despite missing three games with a fractured pinkie finger on histhrowing hand. In his third full season as a starter in 2009, Romoeclipsed 15,000 career passing yards, became the fifth Dallas passerwith 100 career touchdown throws and finished the season as theonly quarterback in franchise history to be on the field for every snapfrom center. With Romo at the helm, the club secured its second NFCEast Championship over the past three seasons (2007) - 21st overalland 17th NFC East crown - and led the team to its first playoff win in13 years with a victory over Philadelphia in the Wild Card PlayoffGame.

In 2010 Romo dealt with his most significant injury after a frac-tured clavicle suffered in the Monday Night Football Game againstthe N.Y. Giants (10/25) forced him to miss the next eight games andultimately the rest of the season when the team placed him on theReserve/Injured list on Dec. 21. Before going down with injury, hesurpassed 2,000 career attempts (2,070) to become only the fifthDallas passer to do so and established a club record with 18 con-secutive games with a touchdown pass.

Romo closed out 2011 with one of the best statistical seasonsof his career. He completed 346 passes (second in his career) on522 attempts (second) with a 66.3 completion percentage (second)for 4,184 yards (third), 31 touchdowns (second), 10 interceptions(second fewest in at least 10 games played) for a career-best102.5 passer rating. He was third in the league in completion per-centage, fourth in passer rating, fifth in touchdowns, seventh inyards, tied for eighth in completions and 11th in attempts.

The 2012 season was no different as the starter threw for aclub-record 4,903 yards (fourth 4,000-yard season) while also set-ting marks for attempts (648) and completions (425) with 28 touch-downs. Witten burst onto the scene as a pass-catching threat in justhis second season (2004) with a then club tight end record 87catches and 980 yards with six touchdowns. His receptions andyardage totals slipped a little in 2005 (66 for 757) but his touchdowntotal repeated itself (six). More receiving threats emerged in 2006as his receiving totals from the previous season were virtually mir-rored (64 for 754), but he again bounced to the forefront in 2007with a team tight end record 96 catches for 1,145 yards - the first1,000-yard season in team history by a tight end and a then career-best seven touchdowns.

Witten finished 2008 with 81 catches for 952 yards with fourtouchdowns but again topped 90 catches (94) and 1,000 yards(1,030) with two touchdowns in 2009. The 2010 season was also amirror from the previous season as he caught 94 passes (topsamong league tight ends) for 1,002 yards and a club tight endrecord tying nine scores. He became the fifth tight end in leaguehistory (Kellen Winslow Sr., Todd Christensen, Shannon Sharpeand Tony Gonzalez) to post consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. He also became the second tight end to haveback-to-back 90-catch seasons (Tony Gonzalez).

In 2011 Witten paced the club for the fifth straight season, andsixth overall, with his 79 catches. He also led the team with 942yards - his fifth straight, sixth overall, season - with at least 900yards and was fourth with five touchdown catches. Witten closedout his 10th season (2012) with a team-best and all-time NFL tightend record 110 catches for his fourth 1,000-yard season (1,039 -second on the team) and three touchdowns.

In Week 1 of 2013, Witten became the second Dallas Cowboy(Irvin) and third league tight end (Gonzalez and Sharpe) to reachthe 9,000-yard milestone. He finished the season second on thesquad with 73 catches, 851 yards and eight touchdowns.

A model of durability, Witten has played in 175 of a possible176 games, missing just one with a broken jaw in 2003. For hiscareer, he has 879 catches (tops in team history) for 9,799 yards(second). His 52 career touchdown catches are good for third. Hehas the top-five single-season receiving yards totals by a tight endin club history, and he is just the second tight end to post three-or-more 90-plus catch, 1,000-yard seasons

With a strong emphasis on the two-tight end set in Dallas, theCowboys picked up a big target capable of stretching the field andwinning one-on-one matchups when they drafted Gavin Escobarout of San Diego State in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.Escobar collected nine passes for 134 yards and two touchdownsas a rookie.

James Hanna came to Dallas in 2012 as the club’s sixthround draft pick. Hanna prepped at nearby Flower Mound HighSchool and played collegiately just up the interstate at Oklahoma, and has caught 20 passes for 159 yards in 32 games with 10starts.

The 2014 starting linebacker corps will feature a mix of youthand veteran players vying for a starting role after Sean Lee waslost for the season with injury early in offseason team work. Fourth-year player Bruce Carter, veteran Justin Durant, rookie AnthonyHitchens and third-year player Kyle Wilber headline the group.

On the outside, Carter looks to build on a strong 2013 cam-paign that saw him log a career-high 122 tackles in 15 games, thethird-highest total on the team. He also recorded the first two sacksof his career.

Durant, who has totaled 609 tackles in seven pro seasonswith Jacksonville (2007-10), Detroit (2011-12 and Dallas (2013),will look to take over the middle linebacker role vacated by Lee.The most veteran player of the bunch, Durant will be relied upon totake a leadership role as well.

A former rush outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme, Wilberwill continue his transition to outside linebacker in the 4-3 schemeand provide a boost with his speed and versatility.

Competing for a starting role and the premium backup spotswill be veterans Rolando McClain (former first round pick byOakland), DeVonte Holloman (2013 sixth round draft pick),Cameron Lawrence (2013 rookie free agent), Orie Lemon, 2014fourth round draft pick out of Iowa Hitchens, 2014 seventh rounddraft pick of Texas Tech Will Smith and rookie free agents KeithSmith (San Jose State) and Dontavis Sapp (Tennessee).

Smith (four tackles, one tackle-for-loss) andSapp (one tackle) were the other linebackers to see time in the game.Holloman and Lemon were injured and did not play.

The most notable changes on defense for Dallas in 2014 arethe departures of long-time Cowboys DeMarcus Ware and JasonHatcher. Dallas alsoinvested in several defensive lineman during the 2014 draft, pick-ing defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence (Boise State) in the sec-ond round, and Ben Gardner (Stanford) and Ken Bishop(Northern Illinois) in the seventh round.

Selvie is the returning sack leader from 2013 after recordingseven sacks in 16 starts at defensive end, both career-bests.

Spencer will attempt to get up to speed following microfracturesurgery on his knee in 2013, but will provide veteran leadership andlook for a return to form once he returns.

Melton and Okoye played for Marinelli while in Chicago, whereMelton made a Pro Bowl in 2012, and will look to bolster the defen-sive tackle positions along with Hayden, McClain and Bass.

Lawrence is a premier edge rusher who, will be counted on toattack opposing quarterbacks from the right defensive end positionafter compiling 20.0 sacks at Boise State.

Mincey split 2012 between the Jacksonville Jaguars andDenver Broncos as a rotational pass rusher, picking up two sacksin 10 games. The Cowboys secondary returns three talented corners withBrandon Carr, Orlando Scandrick and Morris Claiborne lookingto show increased productivity from a down 2013 campaign, and apair of emerging players at the safety position in Barry Church andJ.J. Wilcox.

Carr, the stalwart of the Dallas secondary, produced as theteam’s top cornerback in 2013 as he finished second on the teamin interceptions (three), first in pass breakups (17) and second incover percentage even though he was targeted the most of anyCowboy player, allowing opposing receivers to catch only 55.3% ofattempts against him.

Scandrick played in both the nickel and outside corner posi-tions in 2013, performing well at both. Scandrick finished third onthe team in interceptions (two), second in passes defensed (15)and first in cover percentage (54.5%). He will battle for a startingoutside corner role while also serving as the team’s primary nickelcorner.

Morris Claiborne entered the 2013 campaign as a second-yearstarter on the outside, but battled injuries for most of the year. Asupremely talented athlete and player, Claiborne will look to provehimself as a shutdown option on Dallas’ defense.

SECONDARY

Dallas also returns Sterling Moore - who was acquired viaNew England’s practice squad in 2012 - and second year playerB.W. Webb to its secondary. Both players will vie for larger roles inthe defensive backfield.

Other cornerbacks fighting for a 2014 roster spot are seventhround draft choice Terrance Mitchell (Oregon), along with undraft-ed rookie free agent Tyler Patmon (Oklahoma State) and first-yearplayer Justin Green (Illinois).

The safety position will look to get even stronger than in 2013following Church’s breakout year and returning a healthy Wilcox inhis second NFL season in addition to several backups who figureto play a key role in 2014.

Former 2010 undrafted free agent Church returned from anachilles injury that saw him miss most of 2012 and set career-bestsin almost every category, registering a team-leading 147 tackles, fivetackles for loss, six passes defensed, three forced fumbles and hisfirst-career interception.

The other starting safety position will look to be claimed byWilcox, but he will have strong competition from second-year proJeff Heath, who filled in admirably for Wilcox when he was out withinjury in 2013.The other players looking for make an impact at safe-ty are veterans Jakar Hamilton, Matt Johnson and JohnnyThomas and rookies Ahmad Dixon (Baylor, 2014 seventh roundselection) and rookie free agent Ryan Smith (Auburn).
