While your phone is in your bag, pocket or any-where in the car you can make and receivephone calls through the Blue&Me without touch-ing the phone, i.e. without taking your hands offthe steering wheel or even taking your eyes offthe road. You can make a call either:

1. By scrolling through your phonebook with thecursors on the steering wheel

2. By speaking – saying the name in your phonebook - “Dial Kofi”

3. Or by dictating the number “Dial 02#-######”, ifthe number is not in your phonebook.

Blue&Me, the result of the collaboration between Fiat Group Automobiles and Microsoft, ischanging the way people communicate and listen to music while driving. Using a series ofvoice commands, without taking your hands off the wheel you can make or receive calls andlisten to incoming SMS messages, consult your phonebook and listen to MP3s.

The Blue&Me is an exclusive feature on the Alfa Romeo 159 and Fiat Bravo, which were recent-ly introduced unto the Ghanaian market.

MEDEF (Mouvement des Entreprises de France)recently visited Ghana for the first time in ten years, bringing together French business people with localpublic and private sector representatives. The dele-gation met for two days in Cote d’Ivoire on July 9thand 10th, before traveling to Ghana for two addi-tional days of presentations, meetings, and socialgatherings. As the largest union of employers inFrance, MEDEF exists to facilitate and promoteFrench business interests all over the world, as wellas to evaluate additional opportunities for potentialFrench investment.

French Ambassador Pierre Jacquemot began theseries of events on the morning of July 11th with apresentation about Ghana. The Ambassadortouched on a range of subjects, from the country’sbasic demographics to an analysis of its current eco-

nomic infrastructure. For Laurence Vochelle,Associate Director of the French-based companyArtemia, such an overview was precisely what shewas looking for. “We are in the prospective stages inthe first degree,” Ms. Vochelle said. “Our company isall over Africa, but only in French-speaking coun-tries—for us, Ghana is a new venture. I’m here togauge the political and economic climate and to geta sense of the technology here.” Ms. Vochelle’s com-pany sells computer hardware, as well as printingsupplies and equipment. For them, Ghana’s locationmakes it an ideal base for dealing to all of sub-Saharan Africa.

Veteran delegates, however, had other reasons forattending the MEDEF functions. Jean-Francois Maheof Delmas Group, a shipping company specializingin containers, is one such MEDEF member. “Wealready have our own people and organization inGhana, so we have our own contacts. I am part ofthis trip because our group is part of MEDEF, and it’sgood to show to the authorities that there areFrench companies already working in Ghana.”After the initial presentation and discussion, the del-egates broke off into individual meetings heldaround the city of Accra. The meetings werearranged by MEDEF during the planning stages ofthe convention, according to the delegates’ needs—some members met with local companies, whileothers had discussions with representatives fromgovernment agencies.

Fabrice Rossmann, CEO and Managing Director ofthe newly-opened Sonapack Ghana Limited, hadinformed MEDEF coordinators that he wanted moreinformation about Ghanaian customs stipulations.“As a factory that imports our raw materials from ourparent company in the Ivory Coast, we want to makesure that we are headed in the right direction inregards to importing and exporting,” Mr. Rossmannsaid. To that end, MEDEF put Mr. Rossmann, whosecompany produces corrugated cartons for agricul-ture and industry, in touch with the AssistantCommissioner for Customs Excise and PreventiveService.

With his acquired expertise in helping build brandnames, he established Micro Mobile Links.Micro Mobile Links has been in existence since2007 and already the company is helping maketigo a household name from Kumasi to Techiman. When you come across the men from MicroMobile Links on their motorcycles and vans travel-ling distances to supply, you realize that the work-ers and their managing director understand themission and are on course to fulfilling it.

According to Mr. Ricky Boakye Yiadom, the secretto his business successes have been based on four(4) key elements: Honesty, reliability, Passion andrespect for his employees and customers. Hebelieves that in order to be successful one need todevelop an overwhelming passion for hard work. The manager states that there was the need tostrengthen the laws on defrauding since lots ofmoney is lost due to dishonesty on the part ofsome clients. He also commented on the effectsof vehicular traffic on supplies deadlines, he was

however quick to commend the authorities forthe new currency which made transactions easierand safer. Uncle Ricky as he is fondly calledapplauds the opening of the Golden Tulip Hotelin Kumasi as a place with good appeal and ofinternational repute and further states thatKumasi needs more entertainment and gamecenters of such nature.

The Ricky Boakye group of companies has beenvery supportive of the underprivileged in the soci-ety, the police service, the military and theOtumfuor’s educational fund as part of their cor-porate social responsibility.

The manager through our medium acknowledgesthe support of patrons and entreats them to keepon patronizing their products especially the tigorange and envisions his companies listed on thestock market in the near future.

The Takoradi Port of Ghana, Ghana's premier portcelebrates its 8Oth anniversary this year; 2008.The Port has chalked a lot of successes and gainedexcessive experience as a reliable gateway to theGhanaian corridor. In the year of Ghana's oil findthe Takoradi port has started feverish preparationtoward strategically positioning itself to be anactive player in the country's emerging oil indus-try.

The construction of the port of Takoradi begun in1923, with formal operations starting on December3, the same year. The port of Takoradi has since inde-pendence been under many administrations includ-ing the Gold Coast Railway and HarboursAdministration, the Ghana Railways and HarboursAdministration and the Ghana Ports Authority. It iscurrently under the Ghana Ports and Harbors

Authority which was established in 1986.For a period of 34 years i.e. before the Tema portwas opened, the port of Takoradi served as themain gateway to the country; handling importsexports and passengers. Over the years the porthas been the pivot of economic activities inSekondi Takoradi and the Western Region as awhole. Without doubt the essence of the harbourin the face of the oil find is a big "boom"

The presence of the Harbour and the railway sys-tem at Takoradi made the city one of the firstplanned urban centers in the Gold Coast. The thenEuropean area was located in the hills of Takoradinear the harbour whiles the 'African Township waslocated in the marshy lowland areas of Takoradilike New Amanful and New Takoradi village.

T a k o r a d iTHE PORT OF TAKORADI: A MAJOR PLAYER IN THE EMERGING OIL INDUSTRY

T a k o r a d i

Further, Takoradi Port also contributes to thesocial life of the people. Takoradi became knownas the "seamen's town." The presence of foreignships set the flame of desire for sailing among theyoung men. The social influence of the harbourhas reduced to some extent in recent times. However, with the pivotal role of the port in the oilindustry this trend is about to assume a moreinteresting dimension.

The Takoradi Port continues to be the nerve cen-tre for commerce and offers enormous advan-tages to ship owners,' importers, exporter andsurely to come - businesses that will be involved inthe dealings of the black gold, Oil.

Shippers with accurate documents can clear theirgoods within a day or two. With excellent cargosecurity safe corridor to Kumasi, Northern Ghanaand other landlocked countries like Burkina Faso,Mali and Niger.

Takoradi is taking huge steps into a blissful future;soon it would be Ghana's Port Harcott.

ENJOY sources at the port of Takoradi says theport is refurbishing the slip way and dry dock toenable it repair oil rigs and oil drilling ships. Theport further plans to build storage areas for pipesand other types of cargo required for the oil fields.

When the oil begins to gush out of the pipes frommid next year, and overflows into commercialquantities in the years to come, the Port ofTakoradi will be part of the history entities in theindustry that is expected to change Ghana's econ-omy.

Accra Mall bubbled with unusualexcitement on the 31st may, whenGolden Hearts Trust a foundationfor children with heart conditionshosted the general public to anExclusive Charity Catwalk. Theevent featured beautiful designs ofinternationally renowned fashiondesigners - Ms Masello Kale ofButik Kool Look from South Africa,Ms Layo Folarunso of African Brideand Ms Mercia Hlatswayo ofMertiques Style House who flew inall the way from South Africa.

The catwalk displayed the perform-ances of the restored dance teamand Beacon house dance team fea-turing orphans who captured theaudience with their steps to therhythm, the youngest being twoyears old.

The charity catwalk was held tocreate awareness and raise fundsfor children with congenital heartdisorders. The trustees and organ-izers worked exceptionally hard to

present a spectacular show toemphasize their commitmenttowards assisting families of chil-dren with various heart defectswho are in deer need of open heartsurgery. Golden Hearts Trust real-izes how so many children bornwith a hole in the heart are at timesshort-lived due to the unavailabili-ty of the necessary medical atten-tion, as well as the difficult task ofraising funds for the correctiveheart surgery. It is in this light thatthe Trust is working hard towardsimproving the quality of life ofthese children to enhance theopportunity of education and abrighter future.

Accra Mall and Shoprite the majorsponsors of the show contributedmagnificently towards its success. Many other corporations and out-lets were recognized and appreci-ated for their contributions andsupport for these children. It wastruly a show to remember and aworthy cause.

On the 28th of June, the second day of a week’s long celebration of the first ever Ghana Fashion Week,a breathtaking fashion show took place at the Holiday Inn. This was a brainchild of Sima Ibrahim, CEOof Xopa in partnership with Global Media Alliance.

Designers represented were from Ghana, Ivory Coast and Nigeria. Make up was by Sleek and 2nd Imageand of course the models from Xopa. It was definitely a sight for sore eyes, and a good beginning formany more fashion weeks to come. A few words from Sima: “ it is my wish to have the Ghana Fashion Week recognised by all the fashioncities in the world, as well as create jobs for models of African origin”.

From the 1st of August, Xopa Burg will be open to all interested in becoming models. Pupils, studentsand adults are welcome.

Good luck Sima, and more grease. . . . . . .

Wrestling's Jamaican star- from Ghana

To millions of US wrestling fans, Kofi Kingston isthe first Jamaican wrestler in World WrestlingEntertainment (WWE). But his real identity isvery different - because to his family andfriends, he is Kofi Sarkodie-Mensah fromGhana.

Most wrestling fans have never heard of theWest African country, so the wrestling bodydecided fight fans would be more likely toembrace a wrestler from the land of BobMarley and reggae music.

And so desperate is Sarkodie-Mensah tobecome wrestling's next superstar, he is willingto deny who he is.

"I was actually born in Jamaica - to be honestwith a name like Kofi a lot of people assume Iwas born in Ghana," he says with a badJamaican accent, but doing his best to stay incharacter.

But though he denies it, his mother Elizabeth -the head of a Ghanaian-American organisationin the US - confirms that he was indeed born inGhana, and not in Jamaica. The family onlymoved to the US in 1982.

"I told him: 'Kofi, your cousins watch you on TVin Ghana and want to know why you don't sayyou're from Ghana,'" she says.

"He said: 'Tellthem it is busi-ness.'"

The key to weight control is keeping energyintake (food) and energy output (physical activity)in balance. When you consume only as many calo-ries as your body needs, your weight will usuallyremain constant. If you take in more calories thanyour body needs, you will put on excess fat. If youexpend more energy than you take in, you willburn excess fat.

Exercise plays an important role in weight controlby increasing energy output, calling on storedcalories for extra fuel. Recent studies shows thatnot only does exercise increase metabolism dur-ing a workout, but it causes your metabolism tostay increased for a period of time after exercising, allowing you to burn more calories.

How much exercise is needed to make a differ-ence in your weight depends on the amount andtype of activity, and on how much you eat.Aerobic exercise burns body fat. A medium-sizedadult would have to walk more than 30 miles toburn up 3,500 calories, the equivalent of onepound of fat. Although that may seem like a lot,you don't have to walk the 30 miles all at once.Walking a mile a day for 30 days will achieve thesame result, providing you don't increase yourfood intake to negate the effects of walking

If you consume 100 calories a day more than yourbody needs, you will gain approximately 10pounds in a year. You could take that weight off, orkeep it off, by doing 30 minutes of moderate exer-

cise daily. The combination of exercise and dietoffers the most flexible and effective approach toweight control.

Lack of physical activity causes muscles to getsoft, and if food intake is not decreased, addedbody weight is almost always fat. Once-activepeople, who continue to eat as they always haveafter settling into sedentary lifestyles, tend to suf-fer from "creeping obesity."

“Alcohol and the Body” h e a l t h

Alcohol consumption, including beer, wine andheavy liquors is accepted as a social “norm” allover the world. This powerful drug affects every-one differently and while some become intoxicat-ed after the first drink, others may be able to con-sume four or five drinks before showing anyeffects. Some people drink moderate to heavyamounts of alcohol for years before becomingclinically dependent on it, while others maybecome addicted to alcohol the very first timethey ever take a drink. No matter what particularcategory you fall under, once intoxicated, alcoholhas the same effect on the body. The effects ofalcohol on the body are not confined or privy toany particular race, sex or age group. Excessivealcohol use, including everyday consumption canproduce harmful effects on the brain and nervoussystem and can have more serious side effectsincluding:

• Liver disorders – The liver is one of the largestand most robust organs in the body and is theonly organ that has the ability to regenerate itselfafter certain types of damage. However, alcohol isone of the toxins that the liver does not handlewell and will not regenerate after being damagedby alcohol. The liver processes 95 percent of alco-hol ingested and the consumption of alcoholinhibits the liver’s ability to filter our toxins andabsorb the necessary proteins, fats and vitaminsfor the body to function properly.

• Cardiovascular problems – Intoxication causes

blood pressure and heart rates to be higher at firstand then decrease with prolonged consumption. The irregular and inefficient heartbeat can lead tostroke and heart attack.

• Sexual function problems – Over time, exces-

sive alcohol consumption will reduce testos-terone production and cause erectile dysfunction.

The following herbal remedies and recommen-dations can be used to reverse and combat thenegative effects of alcohol consumption. All ofthe herbal products can be found at SugarCaneNatural Health Shop – Accra, Ghana.

1. Use: Vitamin B Complex, Vitamin C, A and E,Zinc, Burdock Root, Dandelion, Spirulina, Kelp,Fenugreek, Valerian, The Ultimate Cleanse(Complete Body Detoxification Program)

2. Consult a nutritionist, and go on a cleansingprogram to remove toxins from the body quickly.Call SugarCane Natural Health Shop for moreinformation.

3. Avoid saturated fats (meat and dairy products),refined sugars and fried foods which put stress onthe liver. Drink plenty of water, get plenty of restand as much as possible, avoid stress.

There`s no math involved. The grid hasnumbers, but nothing has to add up toanything else.

It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s addictive.

Solving time is typically from 10 to 30minutes, depending on your skill leveland experience.

Enjoy the humourThis is so cool. Read this sentence:FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIEN-TIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS.

Now count ALOUD the F's in that sentence. Countthem ONLY ONCE: do not go back and count them again. See below...

ANSWER:

There are six F's in the sentence. One of average intel-ligence finds three of them. If you spotted four, you'reabove average. If you got five, you can turn your nose at most anybody. If you caught six,you are a genius.

There is no catch. Many people forget the "OF"'s. Thehuman brain tends to see them as V's and not F's.Pretty weird, huh? It fools almost everybody.

The SmithsThe Smiths were unable to conceive children anddecided to use a surrogate father to start their family. On the day the surrogate father was to arrive, Mr.Smith kissed his wife and said, "I'm off. The man shouldbe here soon" Half an hour later, just by chance a door-to-door baby photographer rang the doorbell, hopingto make a sale.

"Good morning, madam. I've come to....""Oh, no need to explain. I've been expecting you," Mrs.Smith cut in. "Really?" the photographer asked. "Well, good. I've made a speciality of babies""That's what my husband and I had hoped. Pleasecome in and have a seat"

After a moment, she asked, blushing, "Well, where dowe start?" "Leave everything to me. I usually try two in

the bathtub, one on the couch and perhaps a coupleon the bed. Sometimes the living room floor is fun too;you can really spread out!"
